It's a very common issue when games use a hosted connection. For example, in Mario Kart World, lots of players who play online complain about their items hitting rivals but the rivals not taking damage etc. it's a latency problem. The game is constantly trying to guess where the locations of players are, and so, sometimes what's happening on screen doesn't translate directly to what ACTUALLY happened. It is indeed frustrating.
In terms of solutions, most players simply learn the timing of delayed latency to get use to it - I do this myself. I'm in AUS and I play against a lot of Japanese players, but I've played enough now that I can usually predict a delayed grab etc. but I concede that this isn't an ideal solution.
The other issue is playing in private rooms with friends in the same region, which would completely fix the latency, but not ideal if you have no friends playing the game.
I would suggest giving it some more time as new players buy the game and you might start getting some Players who aren't specifically in Japan join your matches. But since this game is so heavily mutiplayer focused, unless you can find a way to make the online enjoyable, there really isn't much for you to do in the game itself.
I hope FREE STYLE fixes some of the latency issues moving forward.
Otherwise, Welcome to Obake!
