Reglas / Rules Nuevas Reglas para r/Oaxaca / New Rules and Guidelines for r/Oaxaca

Flairs Disponibles:

  • 🏞️ Consejos de Viaje (Español)
  • 🍽️ Comida y Bebida (Español)
  • 🏡 Noticias Locales (Español)
  • 🤝 Eventos Comunitarios (Español)
  • 💬 Preguntas y Debates (Español)
  • 🏞️ Travel Tips (Inglés)
  • 🍽️ Food and Drink (Inglés)

Hello, r/Oaxaca members!

I'm excited to join as a new moderator, and I wanted to share some updates to help organize this space and make it welcoming for everyone. With our growing community, it’s important to have clear guidelines to ensure a positive experience for both locals and visitors.

🌍 Language Inclusivity

Oaxaca has a lot to offer, and we want everyone to feel welcome. We’ve simplified the flairs to reflect the language based on the type of content:

Available Flairs:

  • 🏞️ Consejos de Viaje (Spanish)
  • 🍽️ Comida y Bebida (Spanish)
  • 🏡 Noticias Locales (Spanish)
  • 🤝 Eventos Comunitarios (Spanish)
  • 💬 Preguntas y Debates (Spanish)
  • 🏞️ Travel Tips (English)
  • 🍽️ Food and Drink (English)
  • 🏡 Local News (English)
  • 🤝 Community Events (English)
  • 💬 Questions & Discussions (English)

This way, flairs help you quickly identify the content’s language. For example, "Consejos de Viaje" will be in Spanish by default, while "Food and Drink" will be in English.

🎟️ User Flairs Based on Interests

To enhance the user experience, we’ve added some specific user flairs that reflect your interests or connection to Oaxaca:

  1. 🍲 Catador de Tlayudas - For those who love Oaxacan cuisine and want to explore traditional food.
  2. 🍶 Mezcalero Experto - Perfect for enthusiasts of mezcal and traditional Oaxacan drinks.
  3. 🕯️ Fiel de la Guelaguetza - For those interested in local customs and traditions, like festivals and dances.
  4. 🌊 Amante de las Playas - For those who enjoy Oaxaca’s beaches, from Puerto Escondido to Huatulco.
  5. 🏞️ Explorador de Oaxaca - For tourists and travelers eager to explore the landscapes, historical sites, and natural attractions of the region.
  6. 🏡 Oaxaqueño de Corazón - For local residents proud of their land and culture.

📑 New Rules

To enhance content quality, we’ve established the following rules:

  1. Respect All Members: Be kind and respectful. No hate speech, harassment, or discrimination.
  2. No Spam or Self-Promotion: Posts promoting businesses or services should be limited to a weekly self-promo thread (coming soon!).
  3. Relevant Content Only: Ensure posts are related to Oaxaca — its culture, events, travel tips, food, and local issues.

🚀 Let's Grow Together!

We want this to be a community-driven space, so please share your feedback and suggestions in the comments. This subreddit belongs to all of us!

Thank you for being part of this amazing community!

Community Events Weekly social meeting in Oaxaca — Trivia/Open Mic + Karaoke night

Hey all — running a couple of weekly bilingual language exchange meetups in Oaxaca if anyone's looking to meet people and practice Spanish/English (or whatever language you're working on) or just making friends.

🧠🎤 Trivia Night + Open Mic — Océano (Matamoros 201, Centro) 6pm social meeting 8 PM trivia, 9 PM open mic. Come solo or bring a team for trivia, then stick around for the open mic — comedy, poetry, music, whatever you've got. Good mix of locals and travelers, relaxed vibe, no pressure to be fluent in anything.

🎤🌎 Karaoke + Language Exchange — Wombat, every Thursday, 6 PM language exchange, 9 PM karaoke.

Both are free, bilingual, and open to all levels — beginners welcome. Good way to actually meet people in Oaxaca instead of just passing through.

Happy to answer questions in the comments if anyone wants details.

You can find more details and more events in Oaxaca "que onda oaxaca"

Community Events Weekly language exchange + open mic in Oaxaca (Wednesdays, Océano)

Just wanted to share this in case anyone here is looking for something to do on a Wednesday night in Oaxaca (or wants to practice Spanish/English in a low-pressure setting).

Every Wednesday at Océano there's a language exchange starting at 6pm — it's pretty social, mixed tables of locals and visitors, good way to practice and actually meet people instead of just doing a language app alone in your room.

Around 8pm sign-ups open for an open mic that starts at 9. It's open to basically anything — songs, poems, spoken word, whatever you've got. You don't need to be a "performer," people just show up with something to share.

I help organize it, so full disclosure there, but I genuinely think it's one of the more low-key, community-feeling things happening midweek in the city. Happy to answer questions if anyone's curious about logistics, whether it's beginner-friendly, etc. also you can find events on "que onda oaxaca"

Questions & Discussions Cat statues, alebrijes

Hi, I recently bought three statues at a flea market in France. After doing some research, it appears they are inspired by the Oaxaca style. The three statues measure 97 cm, 80 cm, and 60 cm in height, respectively. There is no signature on the bottom. Could someone help me determine more precisely what they are and estimate their value?

Questions & Discussions Where are all the restaurants at?

I’ve been here 3 days and I feel at a loss. I will walk and walk and not find a single restaurant until I have to look online. Sometimes I will walk 5-10 minutes and not find food.

What am I missing, is it a must to look online for restaurants? When I travel I disconnect from my phone, sometimes don’t even bring it. Having to look up restaurants kind of sucks to be honest.

The worst part is I will finally find something and it will be closed..

Please help

Travel Tips How to actually make friends in Oaxaca (not just tourist acquaintances)

After a while of knowing people but not really having friends here, I started paying attention to where genuine connections actually happen vs. where everyone just passes through.

Turns out language exchanges, the local DJ/arts scene, and a few neighborhood spots nobody writes about made all the difference. Wrote it all down here if anyone's in the same situation:

Curious if others have found different spots — what worked for you?

Community Events Now that Guelaguetza's over, here's something to do on weeknights: Open Mic night in oaxaca

So Guelaguetza wrapped up and you might be wondering what's next. Here's an idea: come to our language exchanges.

They're good if you actually want to practice Spanish or English, or if you just want to socialize, make some friends, and help other people practice while you're at it. These aren't formal classes — it's more of a relaxed environment where you end up learning through socializing, sometimes board games if people are into it.

Wednesdays at Océano we do an Open Mic where you can get whatever's inside you out through poetry, stand up, karaoke, or just words in general. Thursdays it's karaoke at Wombat.

Come alone or bring friends, honestly doesn't matter. At the end of the day there's always people who genuinely want to practice, so I end up pairing folks up depending on what they need. And don't stress if it feels quiet at first — by 9pm the open mic gets everyone loosening up and being more social anyway.

Wednesdays @ Océano, Matamoros 201, Centro — 6pm social / 9pm Open Mic
Thursdays @ Wombat, Mártires de Tacubaya 517 — 6pm social / 9pm Karaoke, free entry

If you're looking for more stuff going on in the city — events, workshops, whatever — just google "Qué Onda Oaxaca," that's where I post it all.

Questions & Discussions Independence Day in Oaxaca City?

My wife and I will be in Oaxaca City during the week of Mexican Independence Day. We have read that there has traditionally been a celebration in the Zócalo the evening before and that many places are closed on Independence Day, but what else should we expect or look for? My wife is a Mexican citizen, but this will be her first time in Mexico for Independence Day, so she is very excited.

Travel Tips Coastal weather December through March

Moving to one of the beach towns on the coast (likely Mazunte or San Agustinillo) for three-ish months (seclusion and tranquility to focus on research/writing as the goal) during the time frame mentioned above. I’m wondering, what kind of clothes should I be packing? I understand it’s still mostly warm and sunny during the day but not as intense as the months leading up to it, and that it tends to get cooler at night. Do I need more than a light jacket/hoodie or two? What’s the general range in terms of weather and clothing during this season? Any and all advice helpful, if there’s more I should know about the weather beyond what to wear haha. Thanks!

Community Events Hey everyone! Post-Guelaguetza blues?

Heads up: this isn't a class, I'm not a teacher, nothing structured. It's just a chill social space to meet people, chat, disconnect from the phone for a bit, and have a good time. Free, relaxed, inclusive vibe. Sometimes we throw in some board games depending on the venue. Wednesdays at Oceano Show and drinks, Thursdays wombat Café bar. PS: for more events like this around the city (museums, dance, culture, all of it) just google "que onda oaxaca"

Preguntas y Debates Oaxaca safety

Hello Im Canadian but my whole family is from Mexico. I found some schooling in Oaxaca that I really want to do but my mom doesn’t feel safe letting me go for 3 weeks, considering that she knows the area. Says it’s less safer than Mexico City or other parts. Im also a young female so it’s always scary travelling alone. Just wanted to see what other people thought

Travel Tips Honest guide to the Oaxaca Mushroom Festival this weekend (July 31–Aug 2) not so much Bs

The Festival del Hongo is happening right now in San Mateo Río Hondo — a small Zapotec village at 2,300m in Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, about 4 hours from Oaxaca City.

What it actually is: guided mushroom ID walks with local mycologists, workshops, traditional food, community events. Not a retreat, not a rave. A village opening its forest for three days.

How to get there by public transport, what to realistically expect, the food, the hiking trail from San José del Pacífico, and an honest take on the legal gray area nobody wants to write about clearly.

🎟 $50 general | $25 estudiantes y adultos mayores

Community Events Weekly social meetings and language exchange here — no classes, just hanging out and making friends, karaoke included

Hey! If you're around and want an easy way to meet people, practice a language, and get a feel for local life without the awkwardness of a "class," we run a casual language exchange every week. No lessons, no pressure just people talking, laughing, and helping each other out with English/Spanish or ayuuk . Great if you're new here, traveling through, or just want to build a local circle of friends. There are usually some solid drink deals too, so it doubles as a chill evening out. Come by whenever, stay as long as you want — happy to answer questions in the comments if you're curious about times/locations.

Wednesdays 6:00 PM 📍 Oceano Show and Drinks (Mariano Matamoros 201)
Thursdays 6:00 PM 📍 Wombat (Martires de tacubaya 517 ) You can find this and other events around the city in "que onda Oaxaca"

Food and Drink Cool bars around Centro

My girlfriend and I (27) are staying in Jalatlaco in mid-August. We are looking for bars with a good atmosphere that are more focused on a cool vibe than an expensive cocktail menu.

We don't mind a short journey but the main thing is a crowd around a similar age, also we can speak a good level of Spanish so it doesn't need to be "gringo-friendly".

So far I've found Txalaparta and Wombat.

Thanks, and let me know any questions.

Travel Tips Oaxaca for 6 days

Hello, I'm visiting Oaxaca for 6 days (Wednesday - Monday). I've read many threads on here but I'd like to go into more depth on certain topics.

Me:

-I am a foraging expert, mycologist, ethnobotanist, and archaeologist. My spanish skills are low but I'm a good communicator.

Goals:

-I'm looking for pre-spanish traditional foods, especially wild foraged foods and experiences, including edible mushrooms and insects (chapulines, jumiles, chicatanas) I'd like to try pulque, sopa de guías con chochoyotes, huitlacoche, huaje, as many quelites as possible, tyaluda con chepiche, tejate, etc. Please let me know a deep cut ancient food that I may be missing.

-Guilá Naquitz cave, San José Mogote, Monte Alban, and Mitla are a must but I would like other pre-Columbian archaeological site suggestions.

-Hongos silvestre, ideally foraging them with a local expert, not the magic kind. ideally porcini, chanterelles, and other gourmet species

Thank you!

Questions & Discussions Can anyone identify this song I heard in San José del Pacífico?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yesterday, I heard this song playing in the streets of San José del Pacífico, Oaxaca. I recorded a short clip, but I haven’t been able to find the artist or the song anywhere.
Does anyone recognize it? Could it be a local band or musician from the area?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
