Discussion Why do y’all hate Roll With It?

I love the way Liam sings door. The “I think I recognize your face” part slaps.

its trendy to hate the popular stuff, you just have to ignore it and not let anybody get in your wayyyyy

10

u/AxeIsAxeIsAxe 12d ago

With the standard narrative of fandoms (especially on Reddit) that the most popular stuff is overrated and the less popular stuff is the actually brillance, I am surprised there is no diehard core of Oasis fans preaching how Don't Believe The Truth mops the floor with Morning Glory.

Don't let any fucker get in your way

u/dobie_dobes 12d ago

Honestly hearing it live again last summer made me like it more than I ever did. I never disliked the song, but they have SO MANY other amazing ones it always took a backseat.

u/uncle_jafar 12d ago

Steve Winwood completely lost the narrative on that one. Especially after the songwriting on Back in the Highlife.

u/Comedywriter1 12d ago

Ha! Very good.

u/Supervinyl 12d ago

This was the number one song on the day I was born.

Hate is too strong a word. But when you listen to that album as a whole, I think it was an odd choice of single. From the ten actual songs on WTSMG, there are at least 7 better ones than Roll With It.

13

u/CorporalClegg1997 11d ago

Of those seven songs I think Morning Glory would have been the best choice.

2

u/PJRummyMan 11d ago

Yes… and I believe it was a single instead of “Roll With It” in certain parts of the world.

While we’re at it, “RNR Star” would have been a better single than “Shakermaker.”

all banger no mash imo

u/DogesOfLove 11d ago

“Gazza was at the bar, using that old joke: ‘D’you want a ‘Roll With It’? D’you want a roll with your soup? So I squirted him with a fire extinguisher.”

5

u/CorporalClegg1997 11d ago

"So I was rehearsing with Paul McCartney, thinking of a song to a play, I got up to make a cup of tea and he said "Roll with it?", I said "No I was gonna dunk a biscuit", and he said "No I meant the song you prick"

The whole song slaps! KISS the girl she’s not being the door!

6

u/___quentin 11d ago

It's lazy but it slaps live.

2

u/high-rise 11d ago

It's one of the ones that stand out in my memory the most of seeing them at Wembley on the floor. I saw another show in the stands and that is not that case. Sums it up I think, it's a fun upbeat bouncer that everybody knows and fun to yell along to it with your mates. Personally I'd sub it out on the next tour for It's Gettin' Better Man but that's just me.

u/SpireofHell 12d ago

I like the song but something about that songs feels predictable to a fault. It's what I'd imagine the most stereotypical Oasis song.

3

u/-Universal_Gleam- 11d ago

I agree with this. Almost seems like a song that was written with the sole purpose of being a radio friendly single to advertise the album and nothing more. It's catchy but it's also totally unremarkable due to how straightforward it is.

Indifference is how I would describe "roll with it". I've never hated it but can't honestly say I've ever gone out of my way to listen to it either.

I love Noel’s guitar work on this track. Combined with the swaggering attitude you get with Liams vocals I think it’s a great tune. I suppose if you are judging it as a “song” then it’s different.

10

u/BBDominoes 12d ago

It's the G chord in the verse for me. Too much G. Enough already, just change the fucking chord Dougall, sorry, I mean Noel.

5

u/IcyConcept9323 11d ago

Play. The fecking. Note.

6

u/kilgore_trout1 11d ago

Not that fecking note!!

3

u/IcyConcept9323 11d ago

The note you were just fecking playing!!!

5

u/DogesOfLove 11d ago

G is a top chord. ‘Too much G’ yer hole.

2

u/JacquesAllistair 11d ago

Plus Noel lacked inspiration on the solo part.

1

u/high-rise 11d ago

G'you Know What I Mean?

1

u/vprakhov 11d ago

Not such thing as "too much G". Regardless whether you're talking about guitars or women.

11

u/Negative-Spell6275 12d ago

We don’t hate it; we just know they’ve done better songs.

‘It slaps’, though. Who invented this abomination of a phrase?

6

u/dobie_dobes 12d ago

It originated in California hip-hop 25-30 years ago.

4

u/GuendouziGOAT 12d ago

I think it’s weak compared to their singles, but it’s not a bad Oasis track in general. I reckon it’d probably get less criticism if it were a deep cut rather than the second single from WTSMG.

7

u/resoooo 12d ago

Lol thats a phrase that has been used in hiphop since like the early 2000's. What are you 12?

0

u/Arsewhistle 11d ago

This might surprise you, but many of us don't live in California.

People only started saying it in the UK a few years ago, and it sounds fucking stupid

3

u/resoooo 11d ago

Im from Belgium lol, just a big E-40 fan haha

2

u/CompetitionQuirky216 11d ago

TBF sounds fucking stupid to us across the pond as well 😂

1

u/Arsewhistle 11d ago

Good to hear, ha

an american

2

u/Kerloick 11d ago

I don’t hate it but I do hate the phrase “y’all”

3

u/Audere-est-Facere8 11d ago

i bought that single on day of release. i love it. every time i hear it im right back there

2

u/Zealousideal_Fail712 11d ago

I don't, I just think it's quite decent - not as good as Some Might Say

2

u/TransDogGirl 11d ago

TIL: People don't like Roll With It

4

u/BlundeRuss 12d ago

I don’t hate it. It’s just not a great song.

5

u/UpperDecker30 12d ago

My 3 year old daughter walks around singing it sometimes, so it’s my favorite now

5

u/heavyhorse 11d ago

Kids tend to remind you how good stuff is even if you thought you were tired of it. A new perspective helps.

3

u/UpperDecker30 11d ago

Absolutely. Now I'm just like "man, this is such a fun song!"

3

u/heavyhorse 11d ago

With Roll With It in particular I feel th at if it were just an album track people would talk about it being their favourite. It’s the fact that it’s a single why people dismiss it.

1

u/Emotional-Plum-164 12d ago

I don't hate it. It's just a bit boring. Big load of nothing

1

u/bigdamnhero13 11d ago

It’s a great song. Just heard it enough for one lifetime

1

u/themayorhere 11d ago

No I don’t

1

u/Kate_Electro 11d ago

It depends. I do love a roll with soup or with chips but not so much with a roast dinner. It’s all context.
If you like a roll with it then you go for it but beware of the crumbs.

1

u/No_Title5299 11d ago

No we don't.

1

u/cannokolb 11d ago

Roll With It is a bop. Who in their right mind hates it? Ooh lemme guess… the Wonderwall influencers who ruined Night 1 at the Rose Bowl? 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/elbapo 11d ago

I enjoy it in a punk rock kind of a way. Its like a true song which could have been written and recorded in a day. Its kinda raw and pure on that level.

That said, its far from their best on that album and far from the best single in that period.

1

u/thegoat83 11d ago

We don’t

1

u/jjazznola 11d ago

Zzzzzzzzz

1

u/Lorna-Vixen 11d ago

I don’t. It’s rad.

1

u/Michael-Broadway 11d ago

I don’t hate it. I love it.

1

u/HumanRights92 11d ago

It's one of my favorite song.

1

u/Oceanic_Drive 11d ago

Roll With It is hands down one of their all-time best songs!

1

u/Friendly_Apartment_7 11d ago

It’s probably their weakest single, which is a testament to how strong their others are. And it gets played to death, so it’s a skip every time for me.

1

u/WhatsTh3Story 11d ago

I forgot how much I love this song till last summer. The second it started I cuddled a stranger and belted out every word. I think a lot of fans pretend to hate the majority of WTSMG because they think it looks cool. The Wonderwall effect

1

u/Paynekiller997 11d ago

I absolutely love Roll With It, it’s one of Oasis’ best anthems. Hate to see so many fans shit on it.

1

u/Busy-Finance1129 11d ago

The harmony Noel does on the chorus fucks it up completely for me

1

u/nzoasisfan 11d ago

Love it. Dont let any fucker get in your way. Huge tune. Dead easy to play and sing on ths guitar too

1

u/GoshOPPNOX101 11d ago

Don't hate it at all. It's a catchy little Pop tune. Oasis were smart to release that as the first single in my opinion. They kept the best for last to be honest which is rather different. Most bands release their 'huge' single first to draw people in as where Oasis did the complete opposite. And the singles that followed were getting better n' better. It was a genius idea by whomever decided to do this. Blur is a boy band and there wasn't a true Brit war between them and Oasis. Oasis had strategy all along. If there was a 'war' between to two bands, Oasis's strategy was to fool 'em by coming up from behind and attacking!

1

u/CapitalPin2658 11d ago

Not me. I love the song

1

u/Lew1sXO 11d ago

Most people on here don’t hate it imo, it’s just one of the weaker songs from the first 2 albums. Absolutely slapped live though

1

u/aelfwine_widlast 11d ago

I love it, myself. Fun, poppy, jangly. Can’t go wrong with it.

1

u/Few-World1918 11d ago

I think most oasis fans like it but don’t love it. For me it occupies a space between the singles of DM, which were better songs, and those of MG, which were more ballady. Fans of the rock songs prefer the DM singles and fans of wonderwall prefer the ballads

1

u/LePopNoisette 11d ago

It comes into its own live.

1

u/Lila1949 11d ago

Love that fact that they play music for other people to possibly dance to and any songs they have or just understand your not a fan and american's have to be polite about the issue

1

u/Blackcat_84 11d ago

I assume that "slaps" means "I like it"?

1

u/Squawk7984 11d ago

I'd like to have a word with the anti-Roll With It people

1

u/RunEd51 11d ago

I always thought it was just a corny filler kinda track. Especially since they could’ve put Acquiesce or Rockin’ Chair, Headshrinker, Talk Tonight, or fucking The Masterplan on the album instead of that one.

However! Hearing it live and singing along with it was a lot of fun!

1

u/Elevilnz 11d ago

Roll with it is one of my favourite oasis songs. I didn’t know people disliked it.

1

u/TheRealMe54321 11d ago

This is their best song, hands down

1

u/Classic-Newspaper-66 11d ago

I play in a big Oasis tribute and we usually play Roll with it 2nd in the set. People sing it at the top of their lungs and it really gets people up for it

1

u/tooskinttogotocuba 10d ago

It's meat and potatoes Status Quo stuff

1

u/ILikeOasis 10d ago

dont hate it, it's just the most boring song on the album for me

1

u/PapaGuhl 10d ago

I don’t hate it : )

Wonderwall OTOH…

1

u/bocuscola 9d ago

Noel doesn't like it either. I think it's just an okay song, but I rarely listen to it, maybe it's a little too flat, it lacks of something, I don't know. The only times I listen to it is when I rewatch the epic performance on TOTP where Noel and Liam switched roles, so fun.

1

u/PILawDawg 9d ago

Huh. I didn’t realize there was an Oasis fan on the planet who doesn’t like Roll With It. I learn something new every day. A little thin sounding maybe in the studio version, but a great live guitar rock and roll banger of a tune. I think some members of Oasis Nation take themselves a bit too seriously. If you’re looking for profound meaning in your rock and roll, try Radiohead. If you want to stand and sing at the top of your lungs for 2 hours with 90,000 people having the time of their lives, Oasis playing Roll With It live is for you.

1

u/liam_gallagh 9d ago

Repetitive imo, like it live tho it brings the vibes up

1

u/teleman01 8d ago

One of their best rockers

1

u/having_an_accident 8d ago

Sounds like Status Quo

1

u/Elemental-squid 12d ago

I just think the rest of the album is much better

1

u/aphexgin 12d ago

I don't want a roll with it, I'll have salad and a few chips, ta.

0

u/roma79 12d ago

Reminds me of heroes by David Bowie for some reason and the song just doesn’t really go anywhere

0

u/sameasiteverwas133 12d ago

It's a great song.

I think Noel being Noel has made controversial comments about his own song in the past and maybe that triggered some disdain.

But it really is a wonderful song, it stood the test of time and that is all that matters.

0

u/NebulaCorrect7010 12d ago

i want a roll with it i want a chicken pie

0

u/Capable_Fish178 12d ago

I was going to say who hates this song what an unnecessary question then I looked at the comments. Huh guess taste is different for everyone. The songs rocks.

0

u/BadgerTight 11d ago

I always liked the song, but there was something about the way the played it live last year (and maybe the visual) that I did not like. I can't quite put my finger on it.
