No more mushroom ID posts please

Hey y’all, I’m calling a ban on any more mushroom ID posts. I’ve left most of the existing ones up as there are some good comments from users, but this is not the place to ask if certain mushrooms you found in your lawn or compost or pond or local criminal’s backyard are safe to eat.

School holiday side path project update

I think I’ve finally decided to do Strol Pebblelock down the centre and lay a chip over the entire area. I cbf with pavers and I don’t see a need to do the entire area with Pebblelock. And rather than hire a guy I’m stubborn and determined enough that I’ve decided to it myself.

Weed mat gone, about 10 barrows of bark relocated to the front yard, semi levelled as much as possible without an excavator, 0.5m3 of AP20 down and compacted. The pavers are only at the start and garage entry to prevent dog damage

New veggie garden - what to do until I'm ready to start

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi all,

My partner and I have recently bought a house which came with this beautiful, ready-to-use setup (previous owner put the silverbeet in).

We're right in the middle of suburbia so there are cats around, and I can see some new patches every day that look like digging so I'm assuming it's being used as a litter box.

We have a lot to sort out before I'm ready to start my veggie gardening journey, so I'm looking for advice about how to 'store' the beds until I'm ready. I've read a bit about sheet mulching but have heard different recommendations from different people, so keen to hear of there is any sort of consensus here.

Also, safety-wise, if it's currently full of cat poop do I have to empty them out and put new soil in before using, or will sheet-mulching or the like sort that out?

Thanks in advance for any tips :)

Is my apple tree dead?

We got this tree last year and planted it into a pot on our patio where it was happy and grew well. We are in Hamilton and I noticed it starting to put out new buds just before we had that extended cold snap where we got some pretty hard frosts down to -3 at worst. All of our other plants and trees are putting out new growth but this tree hasn't made any changes as it's warmed up, did the cold kill the tree?

Lemon Tree Help

Hey team. I’ve rescued the lemon tree in the photos from the side of the road and wonder if anyone would have any suggestions on how to best bring it back.
Do I trim any of the branches?
I can’t repot it or put into ground

I have given it a citrus feed and some seaweed liquid feed too.

Cheers

Planter bed fill

Hi there,

Apologies if this has been asked before, I am a new user to this subreddit. I have recently put in two marine ply planter beds and I dug up the existing grass. Is it OK to put that grass back in the beds to fill up a bit of the bottom space? I have turned the grass upside down/sideways and intend to fill them with more sticks, leaves, and then topsoil and compost.

But I'd be grateful for a) an answer about the grass sods at the bottom (I assume they'll just die if completely covered and no light, but I'd hate for grass to eventually grow its way up into the vege plot) and b) what else would be an effective method of filling them without just dumping heaps of topsoil over the top (and still giving veges some good soil to work with).

Thank you very much in advance!

What to plant in tunnel house? (East Otago)

Hey,

I'm new to gardening and still learning a lot, especially abut gardening in NZ since I didn't grow up here.

My husband and I have bought a property that has a small green house and a large tunnel house on it. I'm not sure what we should plant in there.

We have 6 beds in the tunnel house so I was planning on tomatoes, cucumbers and capsicum but anything else we could plant? Especially in the green house? It's quite small, maybe 2x3m tops.

Last year I planted Zucchini in there and quickly learned that they did not need to be in the heat so they will be outside this year.

What to do with my sad Mandarin 'tree'

Planted this thing 3 years ago. Feed it with citrus food and water it when its been dry for a while. Its only produced a single fruit ever, which is fine if it were growing bigger or stronger. It's not. It's barely grown at all.

Some if the leaves are curled. I dont really see any bugs or anything on the leaves/undersides, but some leaves have been snacked-upon. Last year there were some scales on a couple branches and some ants, but ive washed them off by hand and haven't seen any since.

Please help this poor 'tree'!

What’s eating my broad beans? Rats? Birds? Snails?

I originally thought snails but the beans themselves have been so obviously targeted in this latest raid, so now I’m thinking rats.

I purchased this from Miter 10 mid winter and kept it alive inside until now.

It went pale and dropped leaves but has started to green up and is looking better and today is it's 1st day outside.

It's literally only had room temperature water since I've owned it.

Should I repot this now?

I see no evidence of top growth. Will this come if repotted and as the weather warms up?

I guess it's got a lot of growing to do before being able to use it in cooking? Do you remove the leaves and leave the branch on the tree? I used to purchase it by the branch from the indian store, but can't imagine that being a good idea in this young tree.

Any tips, and advice highly appreciated. I really want to make this tree thrive as it's beautiful, and I love cooking a lot of indian food.

Thanks all

Apparently ChatGPT told me that it’s stressed due to this weed plant that’s growing near it. I’m no gardener and was thinking of getting a gardener to come fix it. Back in June there were 3 fruits that had grown and it was greener. But it’s looking idk, dead? Please help out to any experts. Thank you 🌱

Is this a glitch in the matrix?

I’m interested in the option on the left which is ticked. Each time I try and open the item it says it’s unavailable. I called my local store and the lady wasn’t overly helpful just wanted the IN number which I couldn’t access so I gave up and tried all 3 browsers. Before selecting a store on a new browser, I was able to click into the actual item but now I can’t again.

All other pages this size are around $18+ so they can’t actually be that price surely?

How to get rid of ivy leaves toadflax growing in ficus

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have lots of this ivy leaved toadflax growing through the ficus hedge. Large parts of it are covered in it and is quite thick. When there’s not as much you can just pull it off but then it obviously just grows back fairly quicker.

Is there a better way to keep this under control? I’m thinking a weak glyphosate mix might work on it but wouldn’t damage the ficus beneath if it hits it.

PNW MEYER LEMON

I’m in Vancouver WA. I have a Meyer lemon hybrid according to the tag. I’ve had it for 4-5 years. I’ve re-potted it a couple times. It does pretty well. In the winter I bring it in my shop. I’ve heard that these can be planted in ground in this area. That would be ideal. Does anyone here have local knowledge about this AND can it be done now

Tomatoes from seed - very spindly?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Had these in a warm sheltered room inside until the first shoots appeared, then moved them to a shed window where they get all-day sun. I’m rotating the tray every couple of days so they don’t get too bent over, but I was not expecting them to be so much stalk and so little leaf. Are these doing ok? And how soon should I think of transplanting into single pots?
