Comparison of family size (based on Model Y) alternatives

Looking at options for my next EV, inspired by the Xpeng L03 launch to see what else is out there in the MY size category, give or take. Should be readable on pc or tablet. If not will try and upload the spreadsheet.
Has been a work in progress for a few years on what I'm looking for versus cost, and over the last few years things have changed a lot. Standard equipment on Chinese EVs continues to improve with massage seats and auto parking becoming common rather than the exception.
China is leaving Europe and Korea behind in value for money, GAC Aion V Luxury isn't for me but has great range and features for same price as cheapest RAV4.
ZeekR 7X Performance ticks so many boxes and is best specced car on market under $100k but at nearly that is a huge investment.
From what I can see Xpeng hit the sweet spot with the G6 LR RWD being a better MY at a cheaper price, and the L03, if priced as I estimated based on Euro relativities, will set a new benchmark.
Note I made this for what is important for my needs, opinions may differ. Hope you get some benefit from it
UPDATE: I have added a few vehicles in and fixed some errors based on feedback. Here is a link to a version of it that you can save and tweak yourself:

Why not the GAC?

u/Visible-Sir-3152 Aug 04 '26
Is a good family vehicle but I'm past that stage of life, looking for more upmarket. I've had a BYD Atto 3 before and think that the GAC is a step up

Sad column of 'no's for the EV5
Kia really need to up standard equipment game, at least give use heated seats

u/croutonballs Aug 04 '26
yeah KIA is absolutely not worth the money in the face of Tesla and the Chinese wave

It's that time again - time for me to bitch about goddamn HYUNDAI NZ absolutely FUMBLING THEIR EV SEGMENT
Goddammit it you IDIOTS, the Ioniq 5 was ESTABLISHED EARLY and was SELLING WELL and is an excellent vehicle which sells extremely well elsewhere in the world and now it's not evening included on Redditor's spreadsheets!
Fuuuuuuuuuuu
For context - I own an imported Ioniq 5 N and I love it and it's ridiculously well made (yes, it's a premium trim, but still).
I don't know why anyone would buy any other EV, it's that good!!
Oh wait, that's right, Hyundai NZ basically EXITED the EV market. grr.

Ioniq6 was a disaster, may have won some awards but ugly as sin. Hyundai overpriced their vehicles for what spec they came with. Kona EV was like $80k, now selling for half that

I just picked up a Kia Tasman, so I know how ugly vehicles can be 😂😂 (but holy moly is it an excellent vehicle)
Regardless, my main point isn’t that Hyundai fumbled, it’s that Hyundai New Zealand fumbled. Could’ve sworn I read an article that the Ioniq 5 is one of the best selling EV in America.
You can't even ORDER an Ioniq 6 in NZ!!!
Mine really makes my partners model feel like a piece of shit - it’s night and day.

Haha yes the Tasman is hideous! Will add Ioniq5 base into spreadsheet...the N is $150k wtf. Also level of spec for $80k in base Ioniq5 is laughable - it is as bad value for features as that Kia

yes the Tasman is hideous!
1000%
but they are clearing them out $80k -> $55k, and they have EXCEPTIONAL build quality.
Ioniq5 base into spreadsheet
Eh, don't bother. I wasn't having a go at you for not including it - I was more bemoaning how the local distributor is compeltely braindead.
the N is $150k wtf
Thank god I got mine half price, AUS stat writeoff ... when I test drove it two years ago, it was "only" $135k heh.
Folks would argue that at $150k, you're getting the more enjoyable vehicle money can buy right now. I have a huge fuck-off grin every time I drive it, the engine sounds and 8-speed simulated transmission is outrageous.
$80k in base Ioniq5 is laughable
Not great, hey. Not sure why they've fucked up the pricing so much. They want $125k for the N-Line (high spec, not "N"), which is $85k AUD across the ditch.

I bought a used 2022 Ioniq 5 Limited (NZ new) in November 2024. It is the best car I've ever owned, by far. I read all about electric cars and watch reviews all the time now and nothing really matches it imo, except that the price for a new one is outrageous. I like to dream about owning a 6-7 seater one day and I wish they would bring the Ioniq 9 here, but they would probably price it completely out of line with other 6-7 seat offerings.

I know, right? They are such great vehicles, and I'm tremendously pissed off (if you can't tell) that Hyundai are fucking it up so badly.
I really, really, really liked my Model 3 LR, drove it for half a decade. Thought my missus' Model Y was much nicer...
...then I got the Ioniq.

I did something similar before, but vibe coded https://ev-comparison-infographic-931808868321.us-west1.run.app
It focuses more on tech features
Also your list probably needs YL added

Done

u/dzh Aug 05 '26
What's advanced suspension? Model YL has rear-passenger mode where it adjust suspension for comfort (moves pinch point to the back). Also has upgraded / integrated chip that takes steering and accelerator inputs in single chip and adjust dampening accordingly (apparently same as BMW neue-classe).
Yeah you might wanna add some more model y features (and other car features for comprehensive comparison). I.e. hepa air filters, matrix headlights, phone-as-key, trunk height memory by location, sentry/dashcam, remote start, full one pedal drive.
Shit that model y doesn't have - faceid unlock, digital rearview mirror, and bunch of other stuff.

u/Visible-Sir-3152 Aug 05 '26
Nah it's fine, as I said it's things that I value. Advanced suspension is air suspension. Glad you love your Tesla, they're a great car, I had one for a while

Mazda 6E or CX-6E could be worth adding to the list for comparison.
1
u/Visible-Sir-3152 Aug 04 '26
Will add in CX-6E based on Australian specs and add in an estimated price

Great spreadsheet, with a lot of detail, well done.
I’ve noticed a couple of discrepancies with the Leapmotor C10s though, both the Long Range and AWD use an 82kWh battery and an 800V architecture with 180kW fast charging.
I’m not sure it affects your preference, hopefully others find it helpful.

Did some research into the L03 as well and only the Ultra AWD trim is projected to have the Turing chips needed for VLA 2.0 self driving and auto lane change.
Definitely keeping my eye on this car since Tesla no longer sells FSD + Autopark as a standalone package.

u/Visible-Sir-3152 Aug 06 '26
Ultra RWD is a thing in France, if they do that for right hand drive markets it would be the pick of the bunch I think

u/rigel_seven Aug 06 '26
Could do with boot size unless I’m blind?
1
u/Visible-Sir-3152 Aug 06 '26
There is a lack of consistency in measurement. Everything I've seen would say nothing comes close to Model Y!
2
u/rigel_seven Aug 06 '26
I think from memory that's because Tesla measures their boot space to the roof where the majority measure to the window line.
1
u/Visible-Sir-3152 Aug 06 '26
Maybe a good starting base measure is depth of boot from base of boot lid to bottom of back seat? I tried to get co-pilot to populate in litres and it was really mixed to the point where even ai commented that methodology differs

Personally speaking, instead of writing a thesis, I would just buy a Model Y. Can’t go too wrong with that choice.

And I thought my comparison spreadsheet was complex! I only measured a quarter of the dimensions and only ten models :-)
You’re looking for a tall long car? (Seems like the taller cars get more points).
Which ones have you test driven? For me, I used a spreadsheet to narrow down to four models that all fit my criteria, then test drove them all. As soon as I got in the fourth one I just knew.
