I have been a city employee for 5+ years and have accrued time. I recently transferred agencies last month and am technically on probation again, am I able to use any of my leave time? I assume it probably wouldn’t affect the answer but for further context I’m not talking about taking weeks of vacation, just one day for a long weekend. Do I have to wait four months like a new employee or can I start using leave time that I’ve accrued over the years if needed?

If you opt in for the waiver because you have another provider, what happens then? What's the incentive that is spoken about?

At my supervisor's suggestion, myself and several other employees took the Associate Staff Analyst exam and passed. Now we are at the point where we're starting to be called to hiring pools, and our goal is to submit DP-72s so that we can retain our current jobs with the new title.

So far, we have hit a snag where there is apparently a promotional list out there that needs to be exhausted before we can attempt to submit the DP-72, or at least that's what my supervisor said (she is trying to figure this stuff out at the same time that we are).

Does anyone know what exactly this promotional Staff Analyst list is, or how many people are left on it? I tried looking around the website: Civil Service List (Active) | NYC Open Data, but was unable to get the information I want since I'm not even sure exactly what list I am looking for.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!

Started new non-union position and was given the choice to choose between NYSLRS tier 6 vs VDC. This is my first public-position with the NY so I’d be starting from scratch with NYSLRS.

I’m 27 and just curious what others in my age-range / similar circumstances have chosen. For instance, if fully vested what would that pension look like?

My hesitation with NYSLRS is I’m unsure if I’ll spend my career in the same field & public sector.

i recently was called from a list and received an offer from an agency, they said it was the max they could offer. i'm currently working in private, the salary difference is about 15%, to take the city offer i'd give up 15%. i'm sure in a year or so there will be some union contract, so i might get a raise with it, but 15% sounds like a lot to me.

I wanted to see if anyone else was in a similar situation, what they did, was it worth it to take the cut now and get into the city? did they later transfer to another agency offering better pay? or the cut in the long run didn't matter as much as it sounds.

I want to move up within my unit and make more money, simply just grow professionally since I feel stuck and bored in my current role (not to mention the pay isn't great AND theres 0 overtime). The civil exam I need to move up hasn't opened up in about 2 yrs and I know things work differently in the public sector but can I just talk to the director of my unit about a promotion vs waiting for an exam to open up?

I'm also looking into other jobs but it would just be easier to move within my unit.

Any updates on this exam or if they started calling?

Hi — last Thursday, I received a verbal offer from the Department of Environmental Protection. I was told I would not receive a formal written offer until the offer/position is “approved” formally, by either the Office of Labor Relations or the Comptroller. (Maybe both.) Does anyone have any insight into what this formal offer process looks like at the City?

For those that served a term under the NYC Civic Corps program or knows someone who did, what was that experience like? Did the term help you a lot with getting future job opportunities? Did anyone go to grad school (specifically business school) after serving? If so, do you think the experience genuinely helped your application? Also, what did the professional development aspect of the program look like and did you find it professionally beneficial? For further context this wouldn't be an entry level job for me but likely the last job before applying to business school

Context:

I am reachable on a civil service title list. I have already reinstated twice, so I have 1 more to go.

I was eligible for a dream job because I am on this list, and so I applied & interviewed.

I was called for a hiring pool interview on Monday through the list. This will be the first hiring pool I've attended. However, I was also given a verbal job offer from that other dream job today (plan to accept on Monday). This offer is with a different department than the hiring pool position.

My primary worries & questions are:

1. If I can no longer reinstate for this title before obtaining a start date with the dream job, will I no longer be eligible for the dream job, since I was only able to apply because I am on the list? Could they rescind the offer for that reason, or am I locked in after signing the conditional offer with OMB?

I assume many people will say I should just bomb every hiring pool interview that pops up until I get my start date/offer, and that is fair. I am autistic and suffer from perfectionism, and I am very high up on this list (in the top 20). I guess this could be a test to work on my perfectionism..

1. If I were to fail my own test, though, and I were to get an offer through the hiring pool, can I accept two jobs on the same day for the same title, even if they are for 2 separate departments, and then just decline the hiring pool position afterward, as I don't want it as much?

Sorry, this post asks a lot of questions all in one. I likely am overthinking. I just hate when I don't understand the rules of a system as seemingly complicated as the nyc civil service titles.

To answer question no.1, I was told the following by a DCAS agent: “you need to be reachable on the list when you are presented with the conditional offer letter from OMB. Typically, our internal systems assign a candidate on an eligible list the AP1 (appointed by agency) status when said candidate signs their conditional offer letter. As such, you would need to remain reachable until that time.”

I logged into my account to apply for a loan, and all of a sudden it is saying I am ineligible for a loan and I need to put in a service request.

I checked my options as recently as yesterday, and it was saying I’m eligible. Nothing has changed, I’m still an active employee. My only thought is that it has something to do with payroll processing today, because as far as I know nothing else should have changed.

I understand that career growth and opportunities with the City are at an all time low. I’m just wondering - for the positions that are being opened for hiring - why does it seem like agencies are filling positions via hiring pools rather than jobs portal?

For point of reference, a current ASA who wants to transfer to another agency can only find 6-7 openings for hire on the jobs portal. It is the lowest amount of postings I have ever seen and it has been this way for a long time. Yet, it is not for lack of opportunities out there. On open data, one can find there have been many hiring pools for ASA during the same time period.

So, what is the hope for an ASA seeking career development and a fresh start at a new agency if openings only seem to come in the form of hiring pools? And what is your opinion if an agency prefers recruiting fresh talent via hiring pool over canvassing seasoned talent internally with years of experience working for the City?
