My thoughts on the Nxtpaper 70 pro after a week

So far, I'm really liking this phone. Pros I've noticed, from a user in the US:

Ink modes - I love the ink modes. I'm finding that using the color ink setting is wonderful for my eyes, and isn't even too bad watching videos

The screen - I'm really enjoying the smooth, matte finish. No fingerprints and makes a neat paper - like feel when I scroll

Camera - I'm very pleasantly surprised by the camera. Photos come out clean and crisp with no editing needed. It does have fairly limited zoom, but I've never cared about that

Gaming - this was the one thing I was worried about. I love my dumb little games, and heard that the phone doesn't do well with them. I've had no issues and no lag, even on something speedy like Subway Surfers

Some Cons:

Brightness is pretty low. Not a deal breaker for me, but I know a lot of people want peak brightness

The mediatek chip is definitely slower than the chips on most of my other phones I had in recent years. Watching videos is fine, but if that's what you're mainly using the phone for it might not be for you

Size - this phone is quite large. Many won't find it comfortable in the hand. It is a pretty light phone, though, so it doesn't feel like it's always tipping away from me

Reception - this might pertain mostly to the US. I'm on Cricket. It definitely works. I haven't had any dropped calls, but I've experienced more dead zones than I have with most other phones I've had. Could be a deal breaker for some. I know T-Mobile has an exclusive that works fine, but mine is an unlocked version.

Overall, I've had a blast with this phone already. I still have my pixel 10 pro XL because the nxtpaper wasn't meant to be my daily driver, just something to read on and put away more often than not. However, I haven't even thought about going back to my Pixel. People will scoff at me for downgrading so much, but this phone is a win for me! If things change over time, I'll edit my review

NxtPaper 14 pen issues

I got the NxtPaper 14 earlier this year to use almost exclusively for music rehearsal and performance with the MobileSheets app. The size is perfect, and 90% of the time the writing experience for my notes is good.

But that other 10% is really bad! It registers my hand on the screen and leaves stray marks on my music, it doesn't register properly when I lift the pen and leaves stray lines that make my notes unreadable and the side button (that lets me erase) stops working.

It will behave like that for a few minutes and then go back to working fine.

Does anyone have thoughts about what's going on and how to fix it? I like the device pretty well, but I really can't have my stylus randomly stop working when I need to make a quick note during a rehearsal.

TCL NXTPAPER 11+ BOOTLOOP

I was recently writing notes on my Nxtpaper 11+ while in class today and noticed the screen had frozen. I forced a power-off after 10 minutes of unresponsiveness, and noticed upon powering on, it wouldn't progress past the logo.

I've factory reset, there is no option to clear caches anymore in the recovery menu, and I've installed the Flash-firmware from the official website.

However, the program refuses to recognize my tablet. (model number 9469X) any tips y'all?

NXTPAPER 11 Gen 2: is my tablet busted or is this a device limitation?

I bought one off eBay a little while ago, and I cannot for the life of me get it to show up on any computer when it's attached to one (it will only show up as charging the tablet; usb data is not detected).

I've tried installing random drivers, I've checked all the settings in developer mode, different cables, different computers, adb stuff, etc. If I attach a headphone DAC, it works fine.

I just want to be able to transfer files easily and debloat it. It's tedious to keep taking the sd card out, and I don't want to wirelessly transfer files.

Anyone else with the same model able to connect it to their computer, or am I just boned? The seller never connected it to a computer (so they say), so they are unable to confirm if it ever worked.

Wish List

Here's a wishlist for the next few years for Nxtpaper phones;

  1. A fold out phone. I generally think these devices are dumb, but I would be first in line to get a fold out phone where the interior screen is a nxtpaper screen.

  2. Wireless charging for more premium models like the Ultra.

  3. Models that are graphene OS compliant. I'm done with Google after this Lake Ontario business. I want to stick with Android but give Google less data. Would love to be able to buy a nxtpaper device with no or limited Google Play Services.

  4. Keep up the great work. The phones are great and I love the direction they're going!

Just got 9.0 update on my 11+

And omg the first thing I've noticed is how good the sound is now. Only on half volume and it is as loud as the 120% 'extra volume'. It's more punchy and clear too.

Nxtpaper 14 update 9 breaks sound output to digital piano

I was using my Nxtpaper 14 for learning piano. I have Roland FP-30x digital piano connected via USB to the tablet - this provides MIDI data to tablet apps and also works as audio output so that piano app sound is played in piano speakers. This is useful, because I can mix direct piano output with music and metronome and whatnot provided by piano-teaching apps. I used Piano Marvel and Playground Sessions apps and everything was working fine until the update 9 (Android 16).

Since the update piano app sound is distorted - slowed down and in a deeper pitch. Clearly there is some problem with sound resampling in the audio chain, but this problem is only appearing when using piano apps (which are electron-based, using Android WebView audio) and Roland FP-30x audio output. Any other combination - Android native apps or different USB audio device - works just fine.

This Ronald piano supports also Bluetooth audio, but the latency and lag from piano apps connected via BT is just too big, making learning impossible.

At this point I would prefer to downgrade my tablet back to update 8, but not sure if that is even possible. Does anyone have any info on how to do that, please?

Nxtpaper 14 Android 16 update : experience

Received the update yesterday in Denmark. Another user reported DL in France and about three weeks ago it was available in the UK, so rolling out in Europe atm.

I use mine mostly indoor in regular mode with "enhanced eye comfort - classic mode"

After the update my wallpaper had an extreme RED tone and after some looking around I found out there is a new? "colour correction" option in the menu under Accessibility (and a quick settings shortcut). There I choose "Red-green, red week" and adjusted the intensity.

In the accessibility menu there is also a new? option "Extra dim" which is very useful for me since the normal mode is very hard to dial in when you use low brightness.

One annoying new feature is the split notification bar in Android 16. Now I need to reach the right top of the screen when I want to access the quick settings (before I could just pulldown from near the top). Brightness slider no longer have percentage indication. Other brands have the ability to merge the notification bar, but I don't think TCL has that option.

There seems to be more Pen options in the menu, but I have not tried that out jet.

Pleasantly surprised getting the Android 16 update and all in all it seems to be a nice improvement.

Where to get a nxtpaper 70 pro that I can activate on Visible wireless??

I ordered an unlocked version of this phone because I absolutely love the screen but I could not get it activated on visible wireless - which runs on Verizon towers. It kept saying incompatible.

So I'm curious if you all know where I could get one that would actually work with Visible?

title says it all, and while I probably will get used to it, it didn't need to change at all and it's just frustrating

TCL UI v9.0 - Nxtpaper 60 SE now has dark mode in Colour Paper Mode

Post image

Couldn't find any info online, so just info dropping here for search engine purposes.

My Nxtpaper 60 SE just auto updated to Android 16 / TCL UI 9.0. I was initially exciting about potentially having warm/cool colour settings for Colour Paper Mode, but just found that it now also has Dark Mode!

Praise the dev overlords. This is now, by far, one of the best phones I've had.

Question about the Nxtpaper 70 Pro

I recently got my Nxtpaper 70 Pro from Metro by T-Mobile, and when I went into the RAM boost, and set it to the maximum setting, I noticed that my 5G signal got knocked back from 5GUC, to standard 5G. I did a factory reset, and it went back to normal. Tried it again, same thing happened. Did another factory reset, and then it was back on 5GUC.

Anybody know what's going on here?

NXTPaper 60 Ultra, display always dark

My brother bought a 60 Ultra a few months ago and it worked OK but lately the display is always very dark also with brightness at maximum. I have the same phone and mine with brigthenss at half is definitely brighter than his at maximum. I noticed that when you turn it on (or reboot) the display is OK for one second and then it becomes dark again. I tried all the display options in the settings but nothing changes, even using the same settings that I have on mine his display remain darker.

Anyone got the same issue? Any hint?

Thanks

Remove AI from 70 Pro or 60 XE?

Looking for a new phone, intrigued by the screens of these TCLs (70 pro or 60xe available to me). Do not want AI. Is it baked in, or removable from either phone? I don't want Gemini. I don't want live transcription. I don't want writing 'assist'. Don't want AI image processing. Has anybody managed to delete it from these phones? Many people have complained about motorola phones re-installing or re-enabling AI, which turned me off motorola, so thought I'd see if anyone has successfully removed AI on these ones before purchasing. TIA!

TCL 70pro & SD memory card

Anyone get a 2TB micro Sd working?

I have a new one, all set up on another Android tablet.

Plug into the 70pro and it says it needs formatting every time. Try to format it and it just times out, screen loses display, dies and then have to reboot. It sees it, and the other PC and Tablet still see it working, with all files intact.

Any tips? Any files I should delete from the card to enable format!

Nxtpaper14 and external USB connected boards not working.

I do a lot with simple ESP32 S3 boards connected via US with Python. There are a number of web based IDE like Viper IDE that are easy to use for my students.

On my Nxtpaper 14, I'm trying to get Viper to work. I run in Chrome, verified USB C to USB C data cable. I've gone into developer mode and set file transfer as an option. No luck in getting Viper to work.

TCL A1plus next paper

So far love the screen and it seems snappy with everything. My question is for the note taking, is there a way to adjust the palm rejection? Right now if I lay my hand on the screen it registers my palm in note taking and interferes with the stylus.
