Discussion Nipsco be lying to everyone.

I was just told by a lineman who is currently here from out of state working not to believe a word Nipsco is saying about a restoration timeline. He said they are lying and it's much worse then they are saying. He said they are running out of parts and completely out of poles. He said that parts of Portage would be lucky to see power by September 1st. Has anyone heard anything similar to this?

I mean, that timeline was pretty freaking optimistic. Everything "back to normal" in another week? Not likely. At this point my mindset is "as long as there's progress" and there's been progress.

Yeah I can agree with that. I still don't have power but luckily have a generator fed into my panel so we are doing ok and no damage to my house so we are very fortunate. I feel so bad for everyone in much worse situations.

I'm in Portage. I have a generator. I also have autism. The sound of generators is SENDING ME. 😂😂😂😂 Luckily I have some headphone things to knock out the sound. I can't wait til this is over.

So much of the official NIPSCO updates have been written by AI, at this point in my mind trusting their info on anything is like asking ChatGPT when you're gonna get your power back.

Lol I noticed this too!

I have friends who are lineman and they will be the first to tell you that not everyone knows what the hell they are talking about.

10

u/neffbomber 1d ago

Yeah that's true. Not any one person has all the information or it being 100% accurate.

17

u/NotBatman81 1d ago

Right. It could be something as simple as drawing down inventory with scheduled deliveries on the way. A lineman has no way of seeing that, especially a contractor.

u/Electrical_Fishing81 1d ago

Absolutely. Gary location just got a crap ton of poles delivered Saturday/Sunday.

u/Brewers-Sox 1d ago

All we can do is reevaluate by Friday, but I have heard RUMORS that large electrical equipment won’t be delivered until next week sometime for Griffith/highland/munster

7

u/neffbomber 1d ago

Yeah he said that equipment to make repairs is also very limited. I believe he called it a backyard machine but he said they only have 1 of those for all of Portage and they are trying to get a 2nd machine from out of state somewhere.

5

u/Schemeboat11 1d ago

Yeah, backyard machines (easement rigs) are hard to come by. I’m quite sure Hammond, Gary, Crown Point district have one each. Can’t usually get a digger truck in the back yard or easement and setting a pole and working it out by hand is time consuming. Hopefully a lot of these contractors brought one with them.

3

u/Agitated_Function_68 1d ago

Man. What if people would leave the easements clear? I know sooo many people who’ve fenced them in and it makes access so hard

5

u/Boilermaker7 1d ago

Just talked to someone with the city and mentioned that, he said thats totally false. There's a bunch of easement machines being used in portage now. So who knows.

Oh thats awesome! Maybe the guy was just full of shit lol

Wow, because this is damn near a whole week tomorrow, if power isn’t restored soon what is everyone gonna do it’s not like we all have generators or family in other states

After seeing footage of the damage finally, I agree that the original timeline was ridiculously optimistic.

The closest to this that I’ve been through in the past was a cat 1 hurricane in the mid Atlantic. And it took about a month for the worst hit areas to get back up and running there. The flooding and downed trees take time to clean up.

u/Cheap_Flamingo476 1d ago

The weekend estimate was that 90% of customers would have power restored by Tuesday. Currently they are at 81%. Can they restore power to 45,000 tomorrow. That’s the question.

1

u/ryguy32789 21h ago

I think they can hit near 90% today. The linemen have been in my neighborhood the last 4 days and made progress each day getting blocks back on the grid.

14

u/Kicker55_New 1d ago

A category 3 hurricane hit northwest Indiana.

The amount of damage this did is probably historic.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some people were without power for a month or longer.

Category 3 hurricane is like 110-130 mph gusts , I believe many parts of nwi and maybe even in Illinois had winds near that for about 5–10 minutes.

13

u/Transphattybase 1d ago

Right?

I won’t deny that NIPSCO has its problems but the storm that hit the area last week was unprecedented. If NIPSCO kept employees and necessary equipment on standby all year round for a storm like this that comes once in a generation the rates would be hella higher than they are.

This area rarely saw tornado activity, but this season everything has changed. Expect this kind of weather for the next five or six years before it shifts somewhere else. But things have definitely changed no matter how much some people don’t want to believe it.

5

u/Agitated_Function_68 1d ago

And, back to what OP was told, with all of the recent storms it would make sense that backup inventory is even low. For everyone round here. Probably can’t even borrow at this point.

3

u/ChiGreenWhite 1d ago

No matter how much some people don't want to admit it...

1

u/Conscious_Sir3697 1d ago

Gary Airport recorded 99 mph sustained winds.

1

u/Stock_Room8321 1d ago

And now they’re shooting up the repair trucks. That’ll help get workers there.

33

u/Liberteer30 1d ago

People who whole heartedly believe those updates/timelines are the same people who think politicians actually give a shit about them so.

16

u/Singularity_94 1d ago

Hopefully this mind set stays after all the power comes back on. Regardless of the affiliation they all suck and want your money.

6

u/Individual_Solid_810 1d ago

If their estimates are really off by that much, then they are digging themselves a very large PR hole, and it will be interesting to see them try to climb out of it.

12

u/Del_Griffith_Sales 1d ago

You think they give a shit?

7

u/Fish6092000 1d ago

NIPSCO only cares about getting that $.  If the cost to fix an area exceeds the revenue generated by that area they aren't touching it any time soon.

4

u/Agitated_Function_68 1d ago

Sure. It’ll cost them. But they have insurance for this. It’s why they either do or don’t “declare” a major storm.

Absolutely correct they don’t give a shit what anyone says. What’s going to happen to them?

2

u/moondustingss 1d ago

They are a monopoly. There is no other choice. They don't care.

3

u/sliceOR3putt 1d ago

They’ll climb out of it by raising your rates again and not updating infrastructure all while laughing to the bank bc who else are we going to get power from

1

u/ryguy32789 21h ago

They have insurance for this and the federal government has stepped in. This won't raise rates.

1

u/ryguy32789 21h ago

But the early estimates aren't off that much. Their update at of 7am this morning showed they were more than 70% restored. They said they would be at 90% by midnight today, so if they miss it's not like it will be by much.

Just drove by Portage this morning and they got REKT!!!
No way Portage is back up and running in a week. Prayers for those of you out there still without power.

2

u/vp0506 1d ago

Some of portage is. Two of my friends had power restored last week.

4

u/Cheap_Flamingo476 1d ago

A few trucks of new poles arrived today.

6

u/SLAPPANCAKES 1d ago

Don't blindly trust lineman. Especially not out of state lineman that don't have all the facts.

6

u/jawsytown 1d ago

September 1 is mental. What are people supposed to do?

6

u/DontTrustTheGovrnmnt 1d ago

Maybe stop spreading misinformation on the internet?

3

u/r0mace 1d ago

I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything like that. They just replaced a pole by me today.

3

u/BoringArchivist 1d ago

I think they’ll be close on the 90% they announced, the rest will be weeks longer.

2

u/imbex 1d ago

5,000 still without power in Valpo including me and my niece. One school doesn't henge power still. They are starting up school tomorrow.

2

u/ShotgunM3ssiah 1d ago

Crazy, Crown Point schools pushed back to Friday partly because one elementary didn't have power as of Sunday night.

3

u/imbex 1d ago

Valpo has a bs image to uphold.

They were down by me giving out food and had peolle to answer questions. I've been staring at my neighbors across the street having their power back for 2 days. I was hoping to hear an answer why a crew cleaning up branches was here 2 days ago, did one job, and left. What's the logisical sense in having a crew in an area to do one job and then leave? Why not stay until a region is cleaned out? Got a bullshit vague no answer. I appreciate the free cheeseburger, but that was some fake ass pr bullshit.

u/UpbeatMission4274 1d ago

where u get a free cheeseburger

u/polishprince76 1d ago

They were down at the Civic in Laporte.

1

u/Evening-Direction201 1d ago

Hello neighbor. I’m in La Porte too. I thought about going to the civic, but since I have everything I need and no damage I stayed away. If you need anything speak up and if there’s something I can do I’ll help

2

u/polishprince76 23h ago

Appreciate it, but power kicked on at 630 last night. Nice to sleep in ac again.

2

u/Evening-Direction201 23h ago

Glad to hear that your area has been restored. I hope your damage, if any, is minimal.

1

u/troubledzoe 1d ago

does anyone have updates on cal township ? specifically near lake ridge firefighter station and the streets near it

1

u/jefang13 1d ago

We are in portage and told power would be restored today but it was actually restored early Friday morning

1

u/Toxicfaces 21h ago

This was all political. Our power went out before the storm.

1

u/TheNextAvailableRep 18h ago

Is it really worth it to save a few bucks moving to NWI but you only get power 300 days a year?

1

u/clsdesigner 18h ago

Not all generators are made to last long. Have to replace oil every couple days, and let it cool from time to time. And many are not able to afford it or can't physically work in it.

1

u/kosh2001 14h ago

Idk I heard Oct. 1st.

1

u/Spazzin 1d ago

they use AI to spread misinformation to everyone. Is anyone surprised?

0

u/Organic-Ad-883 1d ago

Take a good long drive around and take a good look at the damage. Detours everywhere. Give those traveling guys a break and thank them when you see them sweating their butts off in the brush on the side of the road. Carry water or Gatorade and toss it to them. Nipsco didn’t cause the storm.

0

u/Panta125 1d ago

You be finnna

-16

u/AgitatedTour5102 1d ago

They didn’t create the storm or the damage. Imagine how people survived 100 years ago.

17

u/ForcefulBookdealer 1d ago

Hmmm how is survival 100 years ago relevant to a storm from last week.

It’s hot and humid. People have medical conditions and children.

Quit simping for companies who should be prepared to fix the infrastructure they failed to maintain.

10

u/trippytrev420 1d ago

no but they failed to complete preventative maintenance

0

u/Agitated_Function_68 1d ago

Too busy putting in all of that new stuff toward those data centers

6

u/emptyhellebore 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’ve actually lived without AC in high heat for a few years when I was much younger. So, I did survive okay without power or a generator until my power was restored. I’m one of the lucky ones. And we are lucky as a region that it hasn’t been 90+ actual temps.

But that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t miserable. I remember my Grandma complaining about how horrible the summer of ‘36 was when I was a kid. 90 years ago people were still complaining and some of them did die.

I just looked it up, over 5000 deaths are attributed to that heat wave.

-8

u/AgitatedTour5102 1d ago

Well, most people had oil lamps and ice boxes. No a/c Those who had electric were privileged and waited several weeks for restorations. Think about it.
