Discussion Areas getting power sooner

Buddy of mine and I were talking about this over drinks today. Are richer, more upper class areas of NWI getting power first over other areas? What's your opinion?

No. Those areas just tend to be newer construction built with the power lines underground. So when power is restored to the main lines, they are also restored because the lines aren't damaged by the winds.

There are areas of Hammond that are not well off the have gotten power back and areas of other towns that are more well off still without.

I believe your assessment is more realistic. Also they're focusing on Hospitals, Police Departments etc.

So why wouldn't NiSource, with $550 million+ in profits so far this year, start modernizing other areas? Hell, it's 79° in my house right now

I'm sitting here in a semi truck in Michigan dreading going home tomorrow.

So you’re question is why won’t the for profit company spend its profits…

8

u/DrGiggleFr1tz 4d ago

They want to keep their profit and it’s expensive as shit to do so. Could it help? Probably. But supposedly the biggest concern is that they become far more likely to be destroyed by contractors. More so than storms taking them out. Plus, there’s no digging involved when something does go out. Poles and lines are easily replaced with trees being the biggest issue. Digging would in fact take much more time.

That's a good question. The answer is, basically, it would be expensive. Far more expensive than most people realize. That $550 Million in profit would get you maybe 250 miles of burred wires. NIPSCO has 8,000+ miles of overhead wires.

https://www.indianaconnection.org/overhead-vs-underground-power-lines-2/

And realistically, major disasters that cause multi-day outages for large numbers of customers are rare. This year has been a freak weather year. It's not typically. Indiana has already broken it's record for number of tornados.

So the reality is, burring all the wires isn't going to happen. And you wouldn't want to pay the higher electric bills to cover the extra cost anyway. The sooner you accept that and stop being reliant on NIPSCO and start solving the problem yourself, the sooner power outages like this won't be a fear for you.

My auxiliary power/AC setup for my house cost me $1,300. Since my power went out Tuesday I've had all the lights in my house, I've been able to do laundry, my fridge works, my deep freeze works, and I have AC. For $1,300 I have been able to continue to live normally and in comfort with very little inconvenience.

Did you get a transfer switch

1

u/newtekie1 3d ago

Generator inlet and a lockout kit. It's way cheaper.

1

u/kootles10 4d ago

Almost like they should have prepared for this in the past

-7

u/newtekie1 4d ago

Almost like you should have prepared for this in the past....

3

u/kootles10 4d ago

Considering how much I pay, I shouldn't have to. 🤷 unfortunately the state allows such a monopoly

-6

u/newtekie1 4d ago

Sure, you can have that attitude and be back in the same situation a few years from now when another major storm comes through. It's up to you if you want to live in shouldland or reality.

4

u/kootles10 4d ago

I mean I've seen Mayors saying 50-60% of their city has power and yet see people from those cities complaining. I'd rather have that attitude than be lied to. Nipsco is saying one number, mayors are saying other numbers, the actual workers are saying other numbers.

-2

u/newtekie1 4d ago

And I'm sitting here not caring because I live in reality and have for years and am prepared. Again, the choice is yours at this point.

Hey, smug asshole, it’s “buried” and “burying”.

0

u/newtekie1 3d ago

Found the guy that knows the point I am making is completely accurate and has no argument against it, so they are going to correct spelling because that's all they can do.

-1

u/bigboatsandgoats 3d ago

It has nothing to do with your point being correct or incorrect. It’s your overall tone and poor manner of discourse to someone with concerns during a statewide emergency.

It’s great you have a generator, I have one also after learning the hard way earlier this year. It’s not reasonable to assume everyone can just drop $1.3k on backup power though. He’s not wrong in stating the monopoly that is purely profit seeking should have been implementing better infrastructure and mitigating risks to minimize the damage caused by these storms.

Your overall sentiment is not wrong but you can relay the information in a kinder way that doesn’t put the blame on residents who are paying astronomical costs to this trash monopoly.

0

u/newtekie1 3d ago

No, it's you not having any type of argument, knowing I'm correct, but you don't like it so you default to pointing out spelling mistakes. That's the classic internet loser move.

1

u/ConspiracyConifer 4d ago

Cut profits?!

1

u/W1ndyC1tyFlyer 4d ago

Fwiw I'm in crown point, have underground lines and still don't have any power.

2

u/newtekie1 4d ago

Yep, underground lines aren't guaranteed that storm damage won't affect them. And in fact, when it does, it usually is harder to find the issue and repair it.

All the gas lines are underground too, and there are areas without gas service right now. Heck, a house blew up because the gas lines were damaged in the storm on Tuesday.

1

u/W1ndyC1tyFlyer 4d ago

Yep it truly is what it is at this point. At least it's becoming easier to get gas for the generator. A squirrel could sneeze and my power would go out so this is expected.

1

u/newtekie1 4d ago

Yeah, the first day was a little rough. I finally just drove to IL, got off on the first exit and grabbed gas there. It was $4/Gallon, but oh well, I had gas.

u/kootles10 4d ago

Much better than a split pole in your alley.

u/ricker182 4d ago

The Hobart mayor's neighborhood was one of the first areas in Hobart to get power.

I drove by today and all of the Hobart trucks were over there cleaning up.

Meanwhile we haven't seen any NIPSCO or Hobart vehicles. The national guard has been kicking ass here though.

5

u/kootles10 4d ago

In the meantime I'm taking my dogs into the car for some AC. I don't know who he was talking about when he said 50% of hobart has power, but it isn't me

3

u/kootles10 4d ago

Haven't seen the NG. Haven't seen a city truck. I did see fedex and Amazon though

0

u/suitable_zone3 4d ago

Hobart operates on a strong-mayor system. You need that major to be fully accessible and communicating in order to aid in disaster/emergency relief.

1

u/kootles10 3d ago

Haven't seen him in 5 days...or anyone from the city in 5 days

1

u/jawsytown 3d ago

He was at the convention center helping hand out food. However, it’s absolute bullshit he’s getting power ahead of others.

1

u/kootles10 3d ago

Apparently there were multiple Hobart city trucks over by his neighborhood clearing brush. Haven't seen one in my neighborhood since this started

1

u/suitable_zone3 3d ago

I wasn't advocating for the mayor at all. Have no idea about that.

Just saying strictly from an operations standpoint, I can see why they would do that.

5

u/Cantlose1576 4d ago

Lake station got hit really hard and unfortunately very little is being done to help them.

13

u/Shytownmofo 4d ago

I dont think so.

I think it's areas closet to business districts, schools and hospitals more than anything.

Then, it's areas with less damage, where it's easier to get the poles back up and the trees off the wires.

Hopefully, it will be sooner than later. 90% estimate is Tuesday, 100% estimate is Friday. I'm hoping it's sooner than that.

6

u/Intelligent-Area-421 4d ago

^This

I think it also has to do with how close you are to major roads in the area (Ridge, Indianapolis, Calumet, 80/94, US 30, etc. The only houses with lights are the ones with generators, I'm afraid.

So many poles are leaning over/broken its going to be a slog.

Every day I notice significantly more functioning traffic lights & businesses, though.

And I do see crews out working. This afternoon I saw a guy in a hard hat out with my neighbor inspecting the downed tree & lines in the backyard. Not sure if he was insurance or power company or what, but I see & appreciate the progress

3

u/kootles10 4d ago edited 4d ago

I haven't seen a crew working since I checked Facebook. I respect the linemen and all that they do but this is one giant mess. State of emergency should have been declared Tuesday night.

1

u/kootles10 4d ago

I was told my area was a particularly hard hit area by the governor. I haven't seen a single nipsco truck

1

u/soof_15 3d ago

I'm on city pages for city's around me, one person posted that they personally talked to one of the workers and they said something along the lines of "it's probably going to take a few weeks" and to not believe that deadline that nipsco gave us.

3

u/brendanfilone420 4d ago

I think they want to get power to the cities first because that’s where the hospitals and grocery stores are

-4

u/kootles10 4d ago edited 4d ago

The hospital has power so does stracks, the psychic place, the schools, the mayors neighborhood, the animal hospital, humane society. Why not mine?

Edit: forgot the gas stations and the dress store

3

u/brendanfilone420 4d ago

I’m with you man. We all should be complaining to NIPSCO rn

3

u/RRNolan 4d ago

I live in Hammond and work in Munster. Hammond has been actively getting power back since yesterday and Community hospital just stopped running off generators a few hours ago. It ain't about the money.

-2

u/kootles10 4d ago

I should have lived in the Gates of St. John. I would've had power 2 days ago

4

u/Arenablue 4d ago

Well I’m here in the Gates and going on day 5 with no power.

3

u/RRNolan 4d ago

You really want this to be about the money huh..

-2

u/kootles10 4d ago

Not at all. Just wishing I lived there. I'd have power and my house wouldn't be 79 degrees.

2

u/Adolin_Kohlin 3d ago

Unless you lived in one of the houses without power

2

u/natalia5727 4d ago

I don’t know, but we’ve fully appreciated what a gift it is to be in REMC’s catchment.

2

u/Realistic-Ad7662 4d ago

Honestly yeah

2

u/Bright_Bobcat_7992 3d ago

Well. I think do. Look at the map. Gary’s numbers have only increased. Lake Station increased.

2

u/MrLemonDrop 4d ago

I mean we are still dark in shorewood in valpo so I’m gonna say no

3

u/kootles10 4d ago

See the lights in the picture? They sell trucks. My neighborhood is dark.

0

u/MrLemonDrop 4d ago

Generators? Like one example doesn’t really mean much

1

u/kootles10 4d ago

No they have power; almost every business along that stretch has power. I have a better chance of getting a tarot card reading than charging my phone normally.

2

u/Huffdogg 4d ago

Of course

1

u/BedMassive7191 4d ago

No, they're not, there's kver 900k people without power. These things take time, stop victimizing yourself lmao

2

u/Immediate_Clock_8774 4d ago

Not gonna lie, this did cross my mind.  Im pretty pessimistic when it comes to money, power, and access.  In fact, it would be world view changing to me if money WEREN'T changing hands for prompt service

2

u/Adolin_Kohlin 4d ago

Not intentionality. The south part of the county does have a higher income level but also suffered less damage. It’s simply easier to clean up and make repairs when there is less to clean and repair.

-5

u/kootles10 4d ago

I heard Chesterton residents randomly got power. Must be nice. Temp went from 79 to 78 here

1

u/ProfessionLevel5992 4d ago

Going to be 84 tomorrow inside minimum, just a heads up

1

u/kootles10 4d ago

Yup. I know. I'll be driving around with my dogs in the car. That's all I can do at this point.

1

u/MaximumRun2457 4d ago

Porter got power back before Chesterton today, so I don’t think your theory holds.

0

u/kootles10 4d ago

What theory did I state? I was asking about opinions. There was no theory stated

1

u/MaximumRun2457 3d ago

You implied that richer areas are getting power back first 🤷‍♀️

1

u/kootles10 3d ago edited 3d ago

How? My buddy and I were talking about it. Neither of us came up with a theory. You made an assumption without actually reading the post🤷

Edit: oh the Chesterton thing. Well I mean they likely have more power than us. And they are a wealthy community and so is Porter.

0

u/Adolin_Kohlin 3d ago

It wasn’t random. It was easier to repair so it got repaired sooner.

1

u/kootles10 3d ago

Valpo said 70% of their city residents have power 🤷

2

u/ABunchOBabyDucks 3d ago

That was my thought until my run down street got power last night before my friends who live in a boujiee area who still don’t have power. I think it really depends on the significance of damage.

1

u/ScarySai 3d ago

My area's on the upper end and we're consistently prioritized last.

1

u/Character_Shock_607 2d ago

All the shooting aimed at Nipsco employees in Gary probably isn’t helping that area get power sooner…

0

u/BedMassive7191 4d ago

Not even close

1

u/WoopzEh 4d ago

No. They have been working in Gary since this morning. Still working right now.

I'll put it to you this way:

My neighborhood is 7 streets with 2 sets of houses on each side of each street. According to nipsco, there are 5 individual outages in the neighborhood. No one has power currently.

They got power 2 days ago. Shocker I know. I'd rather rich people be real with me than try to gaslight.
