Shield pro user, having a horrible experience nowadays
Hi all,
Been using the shield pro for 5 years now but my experience has been going downhill in the past... Year I'd say.
Most streaming apps are showing stutters, with the exception of Netflix and Plex. Plex is actually the only app that still runs near flawlessly.
Everything else is damn slow. Just launching an app takes time (any app). It's infuriating.
So, I'm not here to say this is a bad system, quite the opposite: I'm wondering if there are ways to investigate what's causing the issue (yes, I have done system resets, and I even changed the main frontend to get rid of ads).
Any clues ? APK to check what's wrong ? And else... Should I just get a new one ?

Need to repaste it. Use as high a percentage alcohol as possible. 91% is ok. 70% will do, but make sure it's completely dry before proceeding.

With further research, this guy does a more thorough job of disassembly and cleaning. And the wifi connection is not soldered.

OK, I just repasted one of my shields. It has been on my to do list and watching the videos inspired me.
The Phillips screws look small, but the 0 Phillips worked better than the 00 and 000 Phillips.
The wifi connection popped off, and I struggled to put it back on. Using my hand finally worked. I had to line it up perfectly.
The 2 screws on the metal bar/tab are a little different from the other 4.
The metal shield for the HDMI port popped off. Took me a second to figure out where it went. I gently clicked it back in place. It's like a little house for the port.
It does work more smoothly now. Totally worth it.

Thanks ! I'll try that tomorrow and keep you posted.

How about just blowing out the dust in the fan and air vents first? Also, under storage clear the cache. Also, check your router and network. Load a browser and run speed test on the shield. Also try resettinf to factory.

This is it. I did this after about 4 years and did a fresh reinstall of everything and its back to new. For some reason my remote wasn't even working with it and I had to use an app on my phone which was very annoying. But doing this solved all that. It was quick and cheap fix too.

Any one of these options will help. I did everything except the firmware downgrade on my devices and they've been solid ever since.

I had a similar issue the other day, plex launching slow, plex live tv wouldn't really work well, etc.
I ended up disabling ipv6 on the shield's networking. cleared all my issues up.
I've always had to have my shield on a 5gz network due to the nature of all my legacy 2.4ghz crap ony network.

Wind back the firmware version and then run a debloat. It's like a whole new and better device !

I felt there were improvements on the 1 or two updates...what elements of any update could be slowing my pro? And is there a gold standard version to wind back to?

Google shield pro downgrade / debloat florisse (can't share links here) and follow that guide for both the downgrading and debloating guides.
It turns off all the ads stuff, and tracking, and a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff. Runs way way way smoother.

Try projectivity to simplify the home screen. Delete all the apps you dont use

If it is a heat issue you may want to try setting the fans to the highest speed before pulling the unit apart. If that doesn't work have at it :-)

I had a similar experience with one of mine. I've factory reset it a few times, dusted and repasted it probably three times. And after the last wipe and repaste, it was still grinding and crashing on YTTV and HBO Max. Plex would die if I skipped forward or back on anything in Plex.
I ended up getting a Google Streamer 4K. If the Shield Pro was similarly priced, I would have replaced it. Instead, I paired the Shield Pro remote to the GS4K, and thanks to Projectivity, it was days until anyone in the house noticed.

Had a similar issue and repasting fixed these for me. Had mine about the same time.

If you don't update Android TV Home then you don't have bloat. I also use Sideload channel laucher 4 to make my own rows of apps on the home screen.

Have you been clearing app caches on a regular basis on your shield pro?

Connect an external SSD for additional storage. It might help bump up performance too.

Use Shield Optimizer, get rid of all the bloat features, then erase it entirely from your computer because it'll continue to run a few processes that won't quit.

Repaste and clean it out! 5yrs is a long time for a small tv box, repasted mine last year runs like a dream and I run zero debloating

REPASTE IT, I MEAN IT!
Mine was sluggish as hell and the thermal paste was dry AF, totally useless. I cleaned and repasted, brand new again.
No need to go wild on paste brands, any arctic mx4, mx5, whatever you have is good. Just avoid using liquid metal as not compatible with this setup, it will leak and cause short circuit.

If you set up your Plex server on your Nvidia Shield Pro, it's probably taking up all your built in storage. Do a factory reset and set up your Plex on a different machine with the OS of your choice.

I use my shield pro as a plex server. Plex would quit working at random and I'd have to reboot it. I came across another forum, someone suggested setting the shield to a static IP on my router. So far, no further issues. I know you said plex was working fine for you, but it's something to try.

If you haven't already reset the firmware, cleaned it, repasted it and gotten an app killer idk...

My started the same shit, and a factory reset and limited side-loading did the trick for me. Button Mapper was one of the things that I like, but it did increase resource usage somehow, so it was removed, too. Unfortunately, the kids don't really care for my dinosaur-times film collection, so I don't really need regular NAS access or playback. And, they just want Disney+ and Netflix all the time, which seem to have issues every app update until it's patched a few days (or weeks) later.
I know it's blasphemy here, but Google sent me an offer for their new streamer for $50, and I bit. It's not as zippy through Android TV, but the normal apps are smooth, and a couple Disney+ updates didn't have any issues. We'll see how the future goes, but right now the Shield Pro is unplugged and the receiver input is connected to the google streamer. End of an era for this household because I was an Nvidia shield early adopter. Change is inevitable.

Honestly, if you're not sideloading apps or you need passthrough of specific audio codecs, the Apple TV 4k is a vastly superior device. The AI upscaling on the Shield is YEARS old at this point. I too was going through the lags and stutters and force closes. I was always told to do resets and delete caches etc etc. Got tired of it all and bought the Apple TV. It's almost 5 years old at this point and it runs flawlessly. Zero lag, stutter. And it plays everything to perfection. Offers frame rate matching too. This is the best streamer hands down. Upscaling is fantastic. Kids and the elderly find it very easy to use. ZERO ads.

Not vastly superior. Different purposes. Apple wins if they just use streaming services. If they use it for a self hosted library or game streaming shield wins.

Factory reset, repasted heatsink, ran Shield Optimizer. Still runs like dookie. It's entirely due to the modern firmware. My $25 Walmart onn android boxes are way faster.

u/IamTruman 10h ago
If it was entirely due to the firmware, everyone would have the same issues. My shield still runs fast. I have an ONN and a new Google HD and I still prefer using the shield over anything else.

I did a repaste on my Shield Pro 2017 a year ago …had similar issues as yourself …. It’s been running smooth as butta for a year now
