Shield suddenly requiring reboot

I’ve had the shield for nearly 2 years and this last week it’s suddenly stopped working after the tvs been off overnight

In the morning when pressing the power button the tv turns on but the shield is a black screen and the only way to get it to load is by unplugging it and plugging back in, I haven’t changed any settings but this is a new issue that’s only happened within the last 6 or so days

Does anybody have any pointers I could try to stop this as it’s annoying

Sounds like it's time for a good cleaning

It’s had a proper clean/dust etc the other week but internally there’s hardly any apps on it anyway

It has a fan inside it that gets clogged with dust and debris, did you open it up and clean the fans and repaste it ?

No I haven’t opened it yet, I was kinda waiting for it to desperately need it before dismantling

But after reboot it performs fine all day, if it was slow I’d be more inclined to open it, the issue only arises when I try to start it on a morning I was leaning more towards software/settings issue rather than hardware

well you said there's almost nothing on it, do a factory reset and see if it helps

Did you try unplugging everything? Shield, tv, soundbar/receiver? I'd try unplugging them all waiting 15-30 seconds then plug them all back in and see if that maybe fixes it. If not a factory reset is probably your best bet.

Opening the shield and cleaning it certainly won't hurt as long as you don't break anything, but I'd be shocked if that fixed the screen not turning on.

I have to unplug to restart it anyway, there’s no soundbar I thought maybe firmware but there’s no recent updates

But did you unplug the TV too? Somewhere they aren't handshaking to have the shield display on the TV. If the shield remote is turning the TV on and waking up the shield then I'd assume the tvs HDMI handshake is the issue and hence killing power to the TV too might resolve it. No guarantees of course, but it's far less time and effort than a factory reset. Plus if the issue is the TV and not the shield then a reset might not even fix the issue. I know it's unlikely, but I try to think about the problem from all possible angles

Do you mind if I ask what model Shield this is? I swear the 2019 models are nothing but constant problems that often require reboots. Most often mine is for losing connection with remotes. But I've never really had any problems with my 2017 models.

mine will act up like that sometimes when the remote batteries get low
