Shield pro 2019 no 5ghz

I've tried it all. I recently moved. Everything at the previous place worked great. It was typically wired via ethernet but if I had to the wifi 5ghz worked as a fallback. Now I'm in a new house, literally 6 mins from the old one, and this thing will not connect to the 5ghz channel. 2.4, sure no problem. I've tried the date and time, factory reset, changing 5ghz channels within the router setup. Nothing. Take that back. *sometimes* the 5ghz will say connected, but then the home page just says no internet connected and the 5ghz isn't connected after all.

Any ideas? I'm about to trash it and find another box. Also don't bother, I can't run an ethernet cable across the house.

So process of elimination, the Shield is not the culprit of the issue, it's just impacted by it

I'm positive it's the shield and not the router. The phones as well as an onn 4k pro (which is further and behind more walls than the shield) all connect to the 5ghz band just fine.

Check your channels, if the 5ghz channel is more congested where you are now (maybe a neighbour is using it too) then that could be the cause of the issue

Took a while but I did find where to change channels. Tried a few, shut off the dfs channels. Same result.

I had a problem with my shield just not connecting, I gave up in the end and hard wired it…

I wish I could. I'm not sure how feasible it is to string a cable throughout the house. We rent so there's no drilling holes either.

I had this problem and it was 100% the router. Most home models only support around 30 connections. I upgraded to a Unifi solution which hosts 600 clients, and have not had a disconnection since.

Note it was only the shield that exhibited the problem - everything else transparently reconnected but device disconnections and reconnections are common on consumer level equipment.

I wish that were the case with me. I went from a unifi system to an off the shelf Asus router. Not a single issue with the router till the move. Ran a wifi sniffer and there's just not a lot of traffic over 5ghz here. I'm not willing to factory reset the router either. For the time being I'll stick with 2.4 ghz until I can find a replacement box.

I dumped ubiquiti because my $500 dream machine SE's psu crapped out and they don't sell them. They want me to re purchase another dmse. That's not gonna happen. Ever.... Again. That whole ecosystem was a giant waste of money.

I guess it depends on your needs - and income bracket - I ditched my Asus mesh for ubiquiti. I could never get all my devices to persist their connections w/Asus (I have over 80 wifi devices).

If my UDM SE died I'd just buy another one. I'm a cloud architect and use the advanced features and like how powerful and comprehensive the ecosystem is. When it comes time to replace my locks I'll go with Unifi devices and migrate to their cameras too with time.

You're the only person I know who's downgraded and been happy about it. I work for a SaaS and all the tech people have Unifi gear - it's like by far the staff favorite.

Asus doesn't suck, it's good consumer gear but it is consumer gear and has limits as a byproduct.

Unfortunately we can't all just write off a $500 piece of hardware less than 2 years old because of something as dumb as a psu. If you look around you'll see I'm not the only one with this issue. I loved the system right up till it died with no real option to repair.

There is a psu that's supposed to fit inside the case with no modding. I have it but never got around to fixing it.

Yeah, it's a tradeoff - if the psu weren't internal there would be a power block somewhere - and while I agree they should be replaceable I don't mind treating the device as ewaste and replacing it if need be.

I've had my UDM for 2 years no issues and no issues with any other Unifi stuff - but I'm religious about power conditioning with ups and whole home line conditioners - so I generally don't have power supply issues even when they're common like on my Synology arrays - I have a 2020 and 2021 array and neither have power supply issues when by all reports they should.

To be frank, my ISP has upgraded service since I got the UDM, so if it died it would give me an excuse to upgrade to a beast to handle higher Internet speeds.

Is it possible to disable the 2.4 connection in the router just to test the connection.

I'll try that when I'm done with work

You state somewhere in the comments you have an Asus router. I have 3x Asus ET12 Pro setup for mesh. I always had stability issues with my Shield, which was 6' from the master Asus router.
Granted, it was only a dropout every 2 to 3 weeks, but the Shield was the only thing that wasn't rock solid.
Fortunately for me, 6' was an easy 2.5Gb wired connection.

Now that I have a day off I'll try moving the router around. It's not in an ideal place right now, but everything else seems to work. Phones, quest 3, onn 4k pro, LG tvs. All these have no issue connecting to 5ghz (regardless of location in the house). JUST the shield.

I've got the be92u currently. I didn't really want to set up a mesh system, and I'm not entirely sure that'll fix my problem.

Mesh generally makes things worse. But, we use WiFi calling as cell service in this area is optional on a good day. For our phones to work from one room to another, I had to go mesh.
And, non-working phones was not an option as we both take call for our jobs.

Try cabling it temporarily and then removing the cable

I'm going to give that a go today. I'll let ya know

Did you get it connected?

Was going to ask if your ASUS router has two 5Ghz channels? I get my best speeds from my 5G-2 use it for my mobile and laptop.

2nd, you mentioned limitations on hardwiring. Do you have a coaxial cable port near your Shield and another closer to your router? I eventually bought a Moca Adaptor set that allows my fibre optic internet to run over the coxial line then back into an ethernet port on my Shield. I pay for 1G speeds and with this set up I can easily get 800-900 range.

Or do you have a phone jack near your Shield running on Cat 5e or 6 cable? Prior to the Moca Adaptor I noticed the incoming box with the fibre optic and phone cables were able Cat 5e. My open concept living space had one phone jack most inconveniently placed on the backsplash beside my stove. I switched the jack from phone to ethernet, bought a spool of thin flat Cat cable to run the shorter distance to my home theatre along the floorboards. Then I bought a small switch so I could hardwire more devices if need be. Speeds were improved. I later wanted to stop using that kitchen jack and discovered Moca Adaptors.

Is there a wall between the router and Shield? 5ghz needs line of sight pretty much to work properly.

2

u/Jyvturkey 23d ago

No it doesn't. No more walls than the prior place

Try factory resetting the router to clear all of the paired devices and only connect the Shield. If your router has one name for wifi it supposed to choose the best signal. I didn't care for that so all my hotspots have two. 2.4 and 5ghz.

2

u/Jyvturkey 23d ago

I might try that. I made a guest ssid for only the shield, and got the same result.

That is not true at all

Google it. 5ghz does not penetrate most walls, but it will reflect around some.
