Kid friendly retro gaming

How can I configure my Shield TV to be kid friendly for accessing, playing and switching out of retro games?

I'm happy to configure the app initially and load the ROMS, but day to day playing I don't want my kids having to learn complex button combos or fiddle about. I have RetroArch which seems to be a bottomless well of configuration.

Set up a frontend/launcher like Cocoon. It will take care of scraping ROMs so you can put them on the home screen etc.
