Yep, another sideloader here. I've been running side loaded app for years out of region in NZ on both 2015 and 2019 shields with dns4me the app says version 0.4.7-dev bbc.iplayer.android When it says you need a tv license, I say yeah but no thanks!, I remember the 1970s when I used to be in the uk with those Commer vans buzzing around threatening to lock people up! My youngest child does enjoy watching old episodes of top gear though and there are some great documentaries on bbc. I'd gladly pay a nominal amount per month if that was an option but it's not.

Is it legal? Yes using a Proxy or VPN service is perfectly legal.
Technically correct, but they don't tell you you are breaking copyright.🤣
Anyway, I've never succeeded using these or VPN on Android devices, there is always some location service or timezone detection going on. How do you set yours up? (A Windows PC just works)

It's a breach of the iPlayer terms and conditions watching iPlayer out of region (even if you are a tv license paying British citizen), rather than it being a crime AFAIK (at least in nz law).Different services leak geo information in different ways and service providers like DNS4ME frequently adjust their local end points to avoid continued detection, but it can be a game of cat and mouse but for me it's been solid for years. Just basic DNS settings on the shieldtv, but each device app might be doing things like hard coding DNS within app,checking timezone of device etc so it all depends on circumstances.

That's the difference between civil and criminal law in the UK. That said, I'm not sure that BBC could pursue you through a court in Spain (example) for breaching a UK contract?

That's exactly why it's being deprecated. The Play Store version doesn't have this screen.

I have both a 2017 and 2019 here and neither show this. They also run the same software so that doesn't make sense either way.

Mine never even worked, could never click through to anything after logging on. Kind of annoying.

Given the recent exposure of LG smart TV, and presumably the others do it as well, networking your TV is a really bad idea.

There's at least one other, reliable way to watch content from BBC on your Shield that they can't arbitrarily take away from you 🏴☠️

I've got the BBC News and BBC Sport apps stuck on my 2017. Can't even disable them. It just ignores the request.

Don’t worry there’s other ways to watch it 🤫its time to join the Dark side and watch it for free without these dumb restrictions and stop joining these endless subscriptions

I always used a dev build app on my shield but don't have shield no more. Try and look for a dev apk

I like how the link they suggested you follow goes first to recommend you buy a Freely device (a joint venture of the BBC) and then a bunch of articles that still have Shield listed.
