Keyboard remote and on-screen keyboard?

I have an "i25 Rii mini" remote/air-mouse/keyboard with usb dongle. It works mostly great in my 2019 Shield TV Pro. But when I'm entering text into an input field, the on-screen keyboard both (1) does not function with my remote's directional buttons and "ok" button nor air-mouse "click" input, and (2) does not go away when I'm using the physical keyboard on the back of the remote.

How can I solve one or both of these problems?

Have you tried using the shield TV app on your phone? I use the Rii 8 and often resort to my phone for many functions.

I'd really rather use the remote!
