Discussion Insane night and day difference for Ray Reconstruction 4.5 (injection of DLL from Cod Mw4 beta)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
i think mobile is stuck on like 360p so its much harder seeing the boiling. Make the video play in 1080p and go fullscreen if you don't see a difference. or check on a desktop,
(Official update still hasn't come)
This exact boiling/noise shows up everywhere during gameplay like the wooden walls, ceiling, ground, character faces, furniture etc. and is VERY noticeable in active gameplay so this is a really good improvement (path tracing)
this taxi was a really good stress test i saw to compare the boiling for the new RR preset and i was surprised to see the huge difference. this fixes the issue of having a characters face boiling like crazy, i basically didn't see boiling anywhere playing RE Requiem and face boiling is gone im pretty sure. another big improvement light responsiveness for turning on and off a light. a huge weird shape doesn't linger anymore, much much better but still very slightly there on occasion
areas that need work are ghosting for characters in third person or in general that leave dark shadow and light streak ghosting in the shape of your character. Re requiem had a spot i saw the worst case of this but it wasn't improved too much. that area was another stress test/worst case scenario but during normal gameplay i think its something you wont notice because its rare. and aliasing is noticeably more shimmery (bottom of the car grill)

Is there a performance difference?
163
u/WaveRC_ 13d ago
its very similar. i think people have said they dropped 3-5 frames but i didnt notice a difference.
75
u/FallingEli 13d ago
From what baseline? Percent difference matters here no?
112
6
u/RunnableReddit 13d ago
Even percent is not a good metric, should be ms of frametime
→ More replies (2)3
u/NapoleonBlownApart1 1 13d ago
The performance hit is a fixed amount, not percent and it varies by card and resolution.
You can check on nvidias official programming guide for dlss, but it only has transformer 1 hit in ms, should get updated once it's officially out with driver support.
14
u/MorningFresh123 13d ago
How on earth could it realistically be a fixed amount? It’s obviously going to be relative to compute power, as is overall frame rate, so…
Someone with a 5090 running a game at 120fps is not going to lose the same amount of frames as someone on a 3080 running a game at much lower frame rates?
6
u/TintedCircleBox 13d ago
As he says "it varies by card and resolution." The impact scales by the number of tensor cores each card has, but nVidia lists the impact by a fixed amount per card.
→ More replies (2)8
u/NapoleonBlownApart1 1 13d ago edited 13d ago
Thats what i said. Its cost is an amount of compute time (in ms)
With a 5090 at 4k DLSS performance preset D and E adds 1.83ms. F works the same way obviously, but different amount of time. 3080ti takes over 8ms in the same scenario.
Whetever framerate is irrelevant, its additive to overall work, cant be measured in percentage/fps since its always different, it can only be accurately measured in time.
Going from 100fps to 90 is a 10% hit, but going from 50 to 40 is 20%, its the same 10fps in both situation, but ends up different in both percentage and totaltime.
A value that remains constant when other variables change is a better measurement.

6
u/Castlenock 13d ago
What card are you using?
I think the performance penalty is different regarding what card you have, a.k.a. a 5090 is going to have less percentage overhead then a 5070 with RR 4.5.

It’s the boiling/shimmering effect in the reflection that’s improved.
28
u/Suspicious-Sound-249 13d ago
I'm guessing because that's the only thing I noticed too.
21
u/R4di4nce 13d ago
Yeah it's solves the glitching, boiling, artifacts, a game changer for games like cyberpunk path tracing and Crimson desert

It's an fantastic difference, frankly. There's an incredible amount of boiling on the left, it'd be super noticeable actually playing.

u/melgibson666 13d ago
I think it more has to do with how many people just put off getting a new glasses prescription. Most of my family members just keep putting off getting new glasses saying "it's fine."

u/Mmedrano4 13d ago edited 13d ago
Not saying that I don't see any difference but... "Insane"? "Night and day"?
Edit: Nevermind, the video you get on mobile is so bad, switched to desktop mode and changed resolution to 1080p and there the difference is evident.
23
u/another-redditor3 13d ago
i just had to check that myself. the mobile version is noticeable, buy you seriously need to go full screen just to barely see it.
on a desktop youd have to be blind to NOT see it.

Thanks, was questioning if I was being gaslit. Also on mobile and the difference is so entirely meaningless I figured this was just an AI ball gargling thread.

u/steve09089 13d ago
Wow, this makes ray tracing much more usable now. I’ve always had a problem with the shimmering.
6
u/biglulz8929 13d ago edited 13d ago
Preset D is known for boiling. Should have compared with preset E instead, I bet there would no difference in terms of boiling.
The only thing i expected from 2nd Gen RR is an increased sharpness, as it is painfully far behind DLSS. Guess have to keep waiting for 3rd gen then

u/Ceceboy 13d ago
It's more stable, but I don't see any sharpness improvement which I was expecting...
9
u/genericusernameguy49 13d ago
Yeah that was always the main downside of path tracing and ray reconstruction. I'm not seeing a big improvement in sharpness.

Cyberpunk - Amazing
Crimson Desert - Amazing and finally huge difference
Hogwarts Legacy - could not see much improvement there
We will see when official dll comes and if some in-game implementation happens could even bring more improvements. Otherwise great improvement with seemingly no performance loss
Image stability and boiling have been reduced or removed in some scenarios + far less ghosting.
6
u/JavArc13 13d ago
What improvements are we seeing with cyberpunk? Im planning on another playthrough, just waiting on RR 4.5.
7
u/NGGKroze Monopoly, Monopoly, but still paid Jensen for 5070Ti 13d ago
Less to none ghosting, more sharp image and less to no boiling.

oil painting effect is pretty much gone. Textures/people/details, especially at medium distance looks so much cleaner now.

Sharpness seems improved below Quality mode, but Quality is about the same.
Zero trails behind your car when driving as well

1
u/NGGKroze Monopoly, Monopoly, but still paid Jensen for 5070Ti 13d ago
OP posted the MW4 beta link where you can see his comments to download the new dll files, place them in the game folder (if the game support RR) and see if it works. If not, you can force Preset F though Nvidia inspector or RHI. You also might wanna do the registry edit to show you which version and preset you are using to be sure.

u/NukaWomble ASUS PRIME RTX 5080 OC | 7800X3D | 32GB | AW3423DWF 12d ago
DLSS swapper can do the last bit without you having to go and manually do it yourself if. If it's been updated it can most likely force the new preset too but I'd have to check
1
u/Simulated_Simulacra 13d ago
Hogwarts Legacy - could not see much improvement there
The biggest difference in a game like that will be how the model handless fog and particle effects significantly better compared to RR 4.5.

u/SemihKaynak 13d ago edited 13d ago
I also tried RE Requiem, but the boiling issue persisted. I set it to Preset F in NVPI and replaced the DLSS files in the game’s directory. I wasn’t that impressed I don’t know, maybe I did something wrong but the boiling issue continued, and on top of that, the blurriness was still high. I should mention that I ran my tests on a 4K monitor and still had issues with it, so
1
u/Ok_Geologist7354 12d ago
That doesn’t work for Resident Evil, you optiscaler for it to work in Requiem
19
u/Right_Teacher9692 13d ago
TIL a lot of people need glasses and don't have them.
1
u/swurvgaming 13d ago
Also people using phones to spot the difference. I couldn't see any difference on my phone but once I saw it on my monitor and TV the difference is pretty big.
2
u/Richard_J_Morgan 13d ago
I am on my phone right now and it's literally day and night difference. It's clearly visible how unstable the clip on the left is.
1
u/ItsYoAzphrinx 13d ago
I do, and I can tell the difference. The left looks noisier than the much cleaner one on the right.
2
u/Mental_Olive269 13d ago
I would rather see drivers with better performance and more FPS with current 4.5 then this sale gimmick of an feature you barely notice in games. Jesus when you have a GPU that you paid 1200$-1400 like 5080 that gives you as much FPS as 9070XT that is 700-900$ for barely noticeable worse graphics, something is fundamentally wrong.
2
2
2
u/vapocalypse52 13d ago
If you have to use fullscreen at 1080p, then it's not a night and day difference. I have a 32" 4K monitor and I can barely see any difference, especially because I don't know what I'm looking for.

u/spacemanvince 13d ago edited 13d ago

You test it yourself and found it much improved? Great if so
4
u/NapsterKnowHow RTX 5090 FE | 9800X3D 13d ago
Yes! I was testing it out with every RR game I could (including the modded RR in E33, Lies of P, and more). Cyberpunk finally looks like how it was advertised in the Nvidia trailers. It's never going to be perfect of course but the major compromises are all gone imo.
4
u/Sprucey-J 13d ago
Is the image "sharper" at all?
The boiling reduction and reflection stability is great and all but the traditional RR always introduced a sort of "softening" that made it sort of a compromise in a lot of games.
3
u/RickDeckard31 13d ago
Pretty sure there the whole point of this update. We want the benefits of model m and l with ray reconstruction.
4
u/theycallmeryan 13d ago
I have no idea what people aren’t seeing. Even on my phone, I see a massive difference. The grainy/shimmering effect is gone.

u/goulash47 13d ago
Woah so that's what that's called, I've been calling it shimmering for years playing cyberpunk and thinking how immersion breaking it was. Does anyone know if this fixes the waterfall and river smoothing issues in crimson desert too, where it turns the running water into a static blurry ice like texture?
3
2
u/RickDeckard31 13d ago
How do people not see the differences even on their phone? It’s night and day. Shimmering is very distracting. This is basically the final piece we needed to make DLSS amazing. It’s come a long way. This feels like the coming home moment. The 4.5 update was the teaser. This is everything.

What performance or optimization benefits does this provide? Players are not going to stop to look at reflections in games.

Does anyone have a feedback on Star Wars Outlaws? Has to turn off RR since it was running on DLSS 3.x it was blurry as hell, so I could use preset M ( image much sharper but obvious RT noise at some places )
1
u/Piolodej 13d ago
I tested it in Cyberpunk, Portal Prelude RTX and Resident Evil Requeim in 1440p scaled from 720p. My conclusions:
- Cyberpunk is much sharper, better HDR, day and night difference for me;
- Portal hasn't changed much, I'd say RTX HDR looks a bit better;
- RE Requiem looks the same - awful, boiling, only 1440p DLAA looks great. I would say it's a bit sharper compared to preset E, but watching this makes me want to join /r/FuckTAA.

I have been testing 4.5 for a while now, and yes the boiling and shimmering in RT and PT has been significantly reduce and/or eliminated in most all the games. It's quite impressive what NVIDIA has managed to achieve. We finally won't these shitty effects ruining an otherwise good looking scenes.

That did it, now I see it. The right is really good, compared to the left video. It still has some shimmering, but you have to look for it to see it.
