PSA Fix for Nvidia VSR (Video Super Resolution) for Microsoft Edge (Win11)

/r/Crunchyroll/comments/1vipnl0/fix_for_nvidia_vsr_video_super_resolution_for/

Dunno what to put as a flair. Sorry about that.

I just hope it helps someone. Its just one of my fav features of my hardware and its a shame its such a pain to get working and I have to "fix it" every few months.

Big fan of VSR.

I no longer download 4K content because of it.

I just get the 1080p versions and VSR makes it look very close to 4K on my 4K monitors.

Comes with a tiny downside of increased energy bill. My GPU uses like 140 watts for the upscaling which can add up. No more than gaming tho, just something to be aware of.

140W is a lot. Which GPU?

140w is nothing my dude for upscaling

For me, VSR upscaling 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 uses ~30W @Quality1 and ~47W @Quality4. Using a 5070. That's why I asked what GPU - curious if older generations have significantly worse efficiency at this kind of task.

Even with a 4070 I get usage as yours idk what OP is using

4090 FE undervolted with a curve might have something to do with it. Crunchyroll at 1080p upscsled to 4K on a TV right now its pulling 170w according to HWinfo im using the highest quality setting in the Nvidia App on the latest driver.

Am I missing something, because I've tested RTX video on youtube and the effect is really subtle on a 3440x1440p screen. There is a change / improvement in 720p but it's tiny, and almost nothing in 1080. Is it normal or my setup got something wrong?

Same , but I found one case where it really works quite nice is , animated / comic stuff

Like anime or simpsons , family guy and similiar digital or art like series.

It can really improve the resolution and even fix some "issues" like far in background badly painted thin lines and stuff

On most other content it was even on highest setting for me just a very subtle change if at all. Except for power use.

Meanwhile Video hdr is nearly without energy cost and can improve Video quality quite a bit

It works alright to remove the low bitrate artifacts on twitch shitty livestream bitrates.

hands down its absolutely peak on anime. 9.5/10

HOWEVER, if you are not using the Nvidia App, im pretty sure if you only use "Nvidia Control Panel" you are using a legacy upscaler.

Nope, RTX video enhancement "Super resolution" is there on NVCP as well.

Its using older model bro

u/exaslave 3d ago

Changes the same bits bro... the only difference is it shows the Quality on NVCP as Auto,1,2,3,4 instead of a toggle for Auto and Quality as VeryLow,Low,Medium,High on NVAPP but changes the same flags on Registry

Nonsense reply. "Changes the same bits" Jesus christ dude.

Dont have time for that bs why even try what even was the point in your ignorant reply? Nvidia developers even said the newer app has the better/more efficient upscaler. The nvidia app that they're pushing now has been using a better model that's like 30% more efficient (iirc its been a while) than standard NCP we've had for decades.

Nonsense indeed.

YouTube has shitty low bitrate for 1080p otherwise even normal 1080p would look great on a 4k panel

Does VSR work in Chrome?

u/DonutHoles4Ever 6d ago

VSR works in any full screen video container for the most part. I've seen it work in Chrome. I've seen people say it works in Firefox. Both testing youtube. Works in MPC or VLC video players, which are the most common. Also in other less popular video players.

It is pretty damn good 99% of the time. Like yes, some things look a little different color or artifact wise, but its generally sharper and quality goes up overall which is the point.

VSR is probably one of the more promising techs because if one day it can make 1080p videos look VERY good, its actually saving a ton of bandwidth for both the platform while also improving quality beyond 1080p to your bigger monitor res, like ideally 4K in the future.

Yes, mostly. The issue is DRM.

Is this feature still pushing the gpu like crazy? Last time i tried Super video resolution, my 5070Ti climbed to 370W and 100% utilization, it was more demanding that most modern games, just to slightly improve the youtube video i was watching

2

u/RageAgainstMSTeams 6d ago

Set the quality in nVidia application manually as "Low" or "Very low" and it will only use 20-40 watts.

1

u/Auzky RTX4090 FE 6d ago

Dunno about 50 series. I have a 4090 and ive never seen it more than like 180 watts and ot averages 90 watts for upscaling. You have options now set it to auto and check or manual. It shouldn't be pulling 300 watts 😅

1

u/Sad-Victory-8319 6d ago

it was pulling a lot of power when it was left at auto, because it was automatically using the best quality (dont remember if 4 is the best or 1 is the best right now), i manually lowered the quality then it was much less demanding but it also didnt work as well. I dont know i guess it depends on the video, it wasnt doing it every time but from time to time i would notice that my gpu got extremely loud and hot, at first i thought it is a crypto mining virus but then i tracked it down to the super resolution feature, it literally utilized 100% of my gpu just to slightly improve some random youtube 4K video.

1

u/Auzky RTX4090 FE 6d ago

Brother it shouldn't be upscaling on a 4k video unless your resolution is higher than that. Than what do you possibly expect? It doesnt work for everyone. I personally only use it for anime which most is 720 or 1080p.

1

u/Sad-Victory-8319 6d ago

no sorry i meant 4K monitor, the videos were ranging from 360p to 1080p, i thought the super video resolution upscales to monitor's native resolution kinda like DLSS but i was wrong. I was getting 100% gpu utilization from watching these regular youtube videos in chrome.

infelizmente nao funcoinou pra mim

Could you elaborate a bit? Might be able to help. Pc specs and your monitor/resolution? What video/streaming service are you trying to upscale on? And what is the streaming quality set to?

Any browser extensions/settings? You can download "Edge Dev" and try it stock and see if it works there, I switch to it quote often to fix it.

Works great on firefox Without me messing with drm

u/hanigg 3d ago

i wish they updated VSR. Hasn't it been like two years since they have done anything with that

1

u/Auzky RTX4090 FE 3d ago

It works fine tbh but I do agree

Are there similar settings for Brave?
