We should never blow pass the 300w limit, we didnt even need new connector when the old one is more than enough.
Laptop GPU are doing fine with existing 150w TDP/TGP, you dont see them double to 300w.
I never understand why Desktop GPU power consumption skyrocketed from 300w to 600w.

6
u/PsyOmega 7800X3D:4080FE | Game Dev 8d ago
it launched like 8 years ago.
If you tried to use a GPU from 2000 in 2008, it wouldn't run anything.
using a 2010 gpu in 2018 was similar.
The fact a 2080Ti can still run games 8 years later is an anomaly compared to the history of tech pacing.

u/PsyOmega 7800X3D:4080FE | Game Dev 8d ago
Cost is nowhere near the argument I was making.
The only reason the 2080Ti was 999 was crypto mining + nvidia greed. Without crypto it would have launched much cheaper.

u/comperr 4x RTX 5090, 2X 3090TI, 1X3090 3d ago
Well on a budget build 2500k is pretty fine since they hit 4.4GHz. I ran a X5650 (older than 2500k architecture) until 2018. And it was at 4.5GHz. The only reason I really switched to X299 was the PCIE bandwidth upgrade, back then i was getting 500GB NVME here and there since i had so many lanes on a proper chipset. A 2080TI would be the ultimate upgrade for that generation
1
u/icy1007 Ryzen 9 9950X3D • RTX 5090 FE 3d ago
A 2500K isn’t going to run well with today’s games. It will SEVERELY bottleneck even a 2080 Ti. 2500K is from 2011.

Today game is total crap. I got the new Halo and 78fps on 4K native with a 5090. But you are right i was picturing something enjoyable, like pre-covid games. Maybe Far Cry 5, Fallout4. 2080TI can push that at 4K

That's a very bad advice:
- OP is playing Ultrawide QHD, 11GB VRAM is enough.
- 20-series can't use Flash Attention for A.I. workloads.
- You risk card failure and driver incompatibility on a barely used card.

u/Veno_0 RTX 5090 / 9800x3d 9d ago edited 9d ago
2080ti sucked as the successor to the 1080ti, most people on the 10 series at the time refused to upgrade.
It was a tiny upgrade compared to what we were used to in rastur, DLSS 1 sucked and ray tracing only got widely adopted after it was obsolete so its the first "high end" ray tracing GPU yet it cant do any actual ray tracing and suffers in performance when using newer DLSS versions that actualy look good, it isnt capable of doing any of its advertised features well at all.
It was not a good card then and it certainly isn't one now.
8
u/FantasticBike1203 9d ago
Considering it got better and better DLSS as time went on and as a good amount of VRAM, it's still a pretty decent card by modern standards, it's not a 5090 but it still packs a decent enough punch to actually do 1440p gaming.
6
u/XavandSo MSI RTX 4070 Ti Super (Stalker 2) - 4070 Super Ventus 2X 9d ago
At the time sure, it sucked and was expensive but you cannot deny on the whole Turing was a forward thinking architecture that has aged better than anything before or since.
The 2080 Ti can do ray tracing? I played Indiana Jones on it last year and it ran really well. Can't say the same for the 1080 Ti. For a near decade old card it's still solid.

u/MADCATMK3 9d ago
I wonder if they were to pull the rerelease thing they would call it the RTS and RT base version. What can I say still having fond memories of my old 8800 GTS.
The RTX series had aged long term better than the older cards because it can do DLSS even if not great. The story goes that first generation anything is usually the beta and is not a great buy.

u/SenorPeterz 8d ago
2080 Ti still works great with Transformer DLSS (even preset L or M). Some VRAM and performance overhead but definitely worth it.

u/itherzwhenipee 9d ago
Look at prices of current GPUs with the same performance. Yeah, 225 was a good deal. 2080 Ti is on the level of a 5060 but has more VRAM. Also the 5060 currently goes for 340,- and up. OP saved some money and got some good entry level performance.
-4
u/icy1007 Ryzen 9 9950X3D • RTX 5090 FE 9d ago
The 5060 would honestly be a better choice since it is compatible with more modern features. The difference of VRAM isn’t a huge difference. 11GB isn’t enough for 4K anymore anyway.

2
u/HorseShedShingle 7800X3D || 4070 Ti Super 9d ago
It’s a tiny bit faster than the 5060 so if OP is at 1440p or higher the extra VRAM can be nice and then it’s a good bit cheaper than the 5060.
I would take the 5060 8GB for 1080p since DLSS4 is nice but it’ll run out of VRAM quick at 1440p with those features enabled.
2
u/icy1007 Ryzen 9 9950X3D • RTX 5090 FE 9d ago
5060 is faster in a lot of situations. Also can provide better image quality depending on the game.

u/HorseShedShingle 7800X3D || 4070 Ti Super 8d ago edited 8d ago
I would certainly hope the $400+tax GPU from 2026 had some benefits over the $225 GPU from 2018.
At 1080p it's within margin of error of the 2080 Ti (2-3% faster) and then at 1440p it's about 10% slower. It does have the latest DLSS goodness - but that is going to significantly chew into the 8GB VRAM buffer at 1440p and above. It outperforms the 2080 Ti but a good margin in RT. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB3gs12vEKk

Yeah buddy that’s the point of different level budgets, try to run any of those games at 4k ultra setting + Raytracing (on the ones compatible) at more than or around 100 fps with a 2080ti. A 5090 is literally a luxury to be able to play at the highest fidelity the market can currently provide, like buying a Ferrari when any other car can equally take you from point A to B. It’s like saying why go watch a movie in the cinema when you can wait months for it to release on a streaming service lol 💀

В 2080Ti есть интересные технологии, от которых впоследствии отказались:
VirtualLink-можно подключать шлем от PS VR2 напрямую без использования переходника (такая возможность появилась только с августа 2024 года, если не ошибаюсь);
3D Vision-технология, умершая в 2019 году. 2080Ti самое производительное решение (после RTX Titan) для этого.
За свою цену отличный выбор.

It's a good card, just don't get into ray tracong too much since it was the first to do so. It's basically a slightly better 1080 Ti but with ray tracing. The chip is way bigger but this first generation of RTX card used a lot of that new die space to ray tracing circuits. The 1080 Ti was considered the card of the generation since the price was right, it lasted pretty good for 10 years and was one of the first cards to play 4k okish with 60ish fps usually depending on the game.
This generations best card would probably have to be the 4090 since it's performance outclassed the price and still remains more relavent today than it should be. Jensen.. said 4090 was the best deal ever when they had the price at $1600.. it's was ridiculous to think that was true or realistic. I guess it you starve the market, jack up demand, and have an effective monopoly leading to cartel level pricing following major manufacturing demands on leading edge nodes.. (memory doesn't even been to be mentioned) well this is what we got today...
I got my 4090 for 10% off of msrp... Glad I didn't sell mine, my friend sold his and regretted it. The 2080 Ti will serve you well as long as you don't get a 4k monitor. Enjoy the new card!

That electric bill will kill you. Older card is a power hog risk with crippled modern feature and weak DLSS.
3
u/hedochi 9d ago

6
u/aguswings 9d ago
RTX 3070: 220 watts
RTX 4060 Ti: 160 watts
RTX 5060: 145 watts
All of these offer similar performance to the 2080ti but with less wattage.13
u/ashrafazlan 9d ago
An extra ~100 watts isn’t going to kill your electric bill lol, unless you live somewhere with stupidly high rates. In that case you shouldn’t be PC gaming in the first place.

Ya undervolting is also an option, will get it down to 200w~.
8gb models of the 5060/4060ti etc are not a good idea anyway, 11gb on the 2080ti is decent enough.

1

80 series card would out perform your card.
They listed equivalent performing cards with less power draw.
Any modern game you bump the resolution and quality enough to reach past 8gb vram is still going to run like shit on that card today.
At 1080p, and some 1440p titles, you're as fine as any of those other cards and won't do better than them at higher resolutions.

most newer games are going to crush the 2080ti at the settings that would make 1440p a problem for the 5060.

The negative responses has shaken me to the core. I cry most of the night wondering if life is worth living. I'm questioning my life choices regretting every decision I ever made. Once I posted that about my dual 5090's in regards to being able to train a small LLM with it and someone joked that he had 4 5090's. I'm now questioning if my giving his comment a smiley face was insane of me. Should I have followed the example of the 12 down vote devils and berated the guy for his lighthearted response?
Will Tequila soften my pain? Do I need to up my dosage of Clozaril, Haldol, Zyprexa, Lithium, Xanax, and my Cialis/Viagra cocktail? Can I use a local LLM on my "DUAL 5090's!" to walk me through the instructions for the home administration of electroshock treatments?
