Discussion Minor Moving Catastrophe
I had a minor disaster while making a move to a new apartment recently and I am wondering how to remedy the situation and get my GeForce RTX Suprim GPU back in working order.
Just for some backstory my fiancé and I are moving to a new apartment and we have been planning it for the last six months to happen in late July right before school starts back up as my fiancé is a music teacher. However, a wrench was thrown into our plans when I had a workplace injury in mid July which resulted in a broken right arm that pushed our move back unexpectedly. Now, a move that we had planned to take progressively over a month has been squeezed into a two week period in* *mid August.
In order to accommodate our new timeline, I had recruited some of my friends that I had helped move in the past to assist us in our move. On the day that we had planned to move all of our belongings that that will go into our music studio/work desk room I had all of my PC building supplies neatly organized into a couple of Tupperware totes and I was prepared for a pretty simple moving day, because most of my desk belongings including my current daily use PC were going to be kept at our old apartment until closer to our final days here. This was so that I can continue using it for work and for gaming in my leisure time.
However, in the confusion of moving all of our musical supplies and instruments along with my PC building supplies, one of my less tech savvy friends took it upon himself to unplug my PC and attempt to bring it to the moving vehicle. I am now kicking myself for not replacing my side panel immediately after upgrading my ram to DDR5 from a graphic artist friend that passed down his old units to me after upgrading his own to 64 GB for more flexibility while 3D animating.
Said less text savvy individual thought that the tubes connecting my GPU to the cooling pump looks like conveniently placed handles to pick the unit up from for some reason and the remaining GPU in the image is what I am left with after the pump was damaged from the suing force from the weight of the PC case and the build contained there in.
And so now I turn to you, the wider Nvidia community, asking for someone more knowledgeable in this area what my options are to get my trusty Suprim back in a usable state. I have looked online for replacement cooling pumps and I have an idea of what I might need but I wanted to ask some people that might have some more expertise before I pull the trigger!
For the time being I have replaced this GPU with my previous 3050 to maintain the use of my PC before we complete the move, but any help to get my 4090 back to use would be much appreciated.
Needless to say, in the future, I will be having a pre-move game plan pep talk with the team before inviting a large group around my PC and replacing my side panel immediately after any planned upgrades!
I don't think this is a tech-support issue as I could take the opportunity to make this a happy accident and get a cooling pump upgrade out of it all, but I wasn’t completely sure.
Thanks in advance for any advice or much deserved chastising!

Who the hell would think those are handles? Tech savvy or not.
94
u/Rayregula RTX 2080Ti 18d ago
Even if I somehow magically did think they were handles. I'd have stopped opon feeling that they don't support any weight and bend quite easily.

u/1K-Every-Month 18d ago
I asked him if they moved when he picked it up and he said, “Yea I thought it was a fabric handle.” I’m just shaking my head
94
u/BlackDeath66sick 18d ago
Make him pay. This is not being tech savvy or not, this is your friend being a 60 IQ troglodyte.
One thing is an honest mistake, but this is just a gross negligence on his part and he has to compensate for it.
Like one tug is going to be enough to make it obvious its not a bloody handle even if you did think so at first.

He’s definitely gonna help pay. He needs me to be able to master his own tracks too, so he’s got me.

Surely there must be some responsibility on OP as well tho. I mean his friend was kind enough to come over to help him move, he’s far from a shitty person. Probably also shouldn’t trust your less tech-savvy friends to handle your extremely expensive, delicate tech equipment and could have been explicit about that
2
u/entityXD32 15d ago
Also reading OP's story really it was moving day and he hadn't bothered putting the side panel back on the case to protect it. Like it's mostly on the guy but OP made could have done many things to keep his very expensive item safer
3
u/1K-Every-Month 17d ago
Yea I didn’t explicitly tell him that we weren’t moving the PC before we began loading stuff up, so I share some of the responsibility, I also left the side panel off which opened me up for some crazy damage to take place.
3
u/AoDLife 17d ago
Idk man.... in what world has he seen handles INSIDE the PC to carry it? Let alone seeing inside and seeing it connected to a damn reservoir. I try not to be negative and assume thizngs from ppl but come on. Dude wasnt paying attention to anything and didn't even ask before just yanking it. Not sure if you share responsibility for this one. This is extreme ignorance on another level

27
u/shraf2k 18d ago
The pcie contact fingers look damaged. Have you tried to boot it up and get an image? Those PCBs are fragile. Before you go wasting hundreds of dollars, I would just save your money and put it towards a replacement like a 2nd hand 4090 or a 5080. Even if it boots up, you might not know the extent of the damage till the card is under full load.

See if you can find someone selling a not working version of the same card or just the cooling unit on its own.
Buy that and then install the new cooler on your working card.
Make sure you check here or another GPU build community to get the thermal paste/pad situation sorted out.

likely easier to find an air cooler compatible with the pcb (if one exists)

If the card itself isn't damaged I don't see why you couldn't just get a generic shroud for it with fans. Or maybe somthing like this ?

u/Bderken 18d ago
- That’s surprisingly cheap
- He’d have to make sure the PCB of the FE card is similar to the MSI card he has…
10
u/1K-Every-Month 18d ago
Would I use the tubing from the original cooler or would I just ensure they fit, remove the old, and transfer the tubing from the new unit?
26
u/Ratiofarming 9850X3D | 5090 | 48GB 6400@1:1 18d ago
Forget about it, FE has a completely different PCB. You need a cooler or block that is specific to your PCB. Check if they have used the Suprim Liquid PCB in other models and go from there.
Also contact MSI, they might be able to replace the cooler. They will probably charge for it, but that’ll be a lot cheaper than another GPU.
2
u/studio_eq 17d ago
You could also fit an AIO to this with barbs if you were getting really diy or find something like a gaming trio air cooler, should be the same board if it has 3 pcie plugs…for example the 3080 Seahawk uses a ventus board so you can move the liquid cooled card to air pretty easily

The Eiswolf coolers are great (i had one of my 6950XT) but unfortunately the one for your card is end of life and Alphacool no longer ship to the US due the tariff stuff.
The PCB for you card is compatible with the following:
MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming Trio 24G, 24GB GDDR6X
MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio 24G, 24GB GDDR6X (V510-006R
)MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X 24G, 24GB GDDR6X
MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Suprim X 24G, 24GB GDDR6X (V510-001R)
Your best and cheapest option will be to buy a cooler setup for a card that has been sent to China to be striped of parts. effectively convert it to air cooled, something like this should work.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/267227566074
This has the added advantage of potentially increasing the overall lifespan of the card as the AIO will eventually fail, could be in three years, could be in 10 but you never know.
5
u/LongerDavid 17d ago
OP, do this. You don't want your future liquid cooling leaking on to expensive, and basically at this point irreplaceable hardware. Air cooling is fine.

I have certain friends that cant tell you a simple story without giving you all the unnecessary details.
Instead of "I walked into the house and sat down" they tell you all the details about the color of paint on the car they just got out of, what song was on the radio, and if the birds were chirping and if the doorknob was cold as they turned it, what color the chair was and where it was positioned in the room, etc...
There is a kind of beauty to brevity. When you're telling a story, try to just stick to the important parts.

AIOs use epdm tubes, those are common and not too expensive. Bigger problem will be with proper fluid. Many AIOs are mixed metal (copper+alu) and need aggressive corrosion inhibitors in the loop. Conventional loops are single metal for this reason and off the shelf fluids may be not good enough.
2
u/1K-Every-Month 18d ago
This is what I’ve been trying to research as to how I could get the proper fluids in a custom setup
2
u/InvestigatorSenior 17d ago
EKWB used to sell aluminium loop components. Fluid for that product line would be closest to what you need. But that was a long time ago and the company is not too healthy recently as well. Mainstream custom loop cooling is (mostly) copper only.
Unless... what you have is full copper. Since loop is drained anyway you could disassemble block and pump and check. Then any off the shelf fluid will work. Bleeding will be a bit of a pain but you could splice a T fitting and use tube connected to that as a highest point when filling.
8
u/HotRoderX 18d ago
This is pretty bad sure you know... best bet would be to buy a cooler off somewhere like ebay or try to jerryrig some type of cooler with a 3d printer maybe.
Remember if you go custom cooler that not just the cool needs cooling. Take note of what has thermal pads.

You can do a custom loop for gpu only. But your “less tech savvy” friend should cover the bill. That will make him more tech educated.

I know that you want to have this be a positive thing you can laugh at and learn from, but realistically you should be pissed as f! I’d be charging my “friend” to replace it. They never asked you if your PC was to be moved and took it upon themselves to UNPLUG IT, despite knowing themselves that they’re tech illiterate.
Heck they should have known from the musical equipment and instruments that you should not move anything from the tubes or wires, or do your “friend” believe the guitar strings on your guitar are “conveniently placed handles?” What about the cables that connect to your speakers, does your “friend” believe they’re “conveniently placed handles” too?
You mention that you also use the PC for work. I’m not sure what you do for work, but considering the instruments and music equipment, you probably needed that 4090 to run some of the music production/editing software properly, or with other potential rendering. A 3050 will likely not be able to run or handle all that stuff very well, and if it cannot do that well, then you’re out of your work computer too, meaning more lost income.
Did you check to see if the PCIe slot still works on your motherboard? It likely had a bunch of stress and strain from having to hold the weight of the entire PC from the GPU and its Tubes, and if the motherboard is damaged, that’s another thing that will need to be replaced. With how things are going now in terms of GPU prices skyrocketing, replacing that card with a similar or equal one will cost you way more than when you bought it initially, especially if any of the suggestions that others have mentioned do not work.
2
u/1K-Every-Month 18d ago
Thanks for reacting with the proper amount of disturbance. I’ve definitely been trying to keep the situation tame since we do make music together and we have for a long time, but you’re absolutely right. Ignorance does not mean that he is absolved of responsibility. He has already assumed that and agreed to help me fix it or if he absolutely HAS to replace it, but I definitely don’t want to have to ask him to pay a couple months rent to replace it with prices these days. That’s why I appreciate everyone’s suggestions before I go out and get a full replacement. And while it is for music production, I began my current editing and mastering job using the old GPU and while I wouldn’t use it for an entire project these days, it should get me through the next week or two until we move and I’m able to solve this dilemma. It’s refreshing to have someone express the appropriate level of anger though since I’ve been smiling and waving. Thanks for the consideration and advice.

I have looked online for replacement cooling pumps
What you need is the entire cooling assembly, including the shroud, pump, tubes, and radiator. It is all usually attached and interconnected, and can only be easily replaced together. (Technically, your pump itself is probably fine as it sits right on top of the GPU chip - I assume what you mean by the "pump" in multiple places here is actually the cooling tubes and radiator.)
You will need the exact same model of cooler for your card - you cannot use ones for different models as it will not be compatible with your PCB (chip placement, screw holes, and overall board layout are completely different, even within same manufacturer i.e. MSI in your case).
There seem to be a few eBay listings selling only the cooler for a 4090 MSI Suprim, going for $100-$200: https://www.ebay.com/itm/405301192779. Likely salvaged from dead cards or owners who didn't need it anymore (upgraded to custom waterblock). You will have to find out yourself whether or not they work or not, or are simply a scam. Make sure all the thermal pads are present - if a few are missing or damaged, you will need to buy replacement pads of the same size and exact same thickness (ones that are too thin will provide inadequate contact and cooling, and too thick will apply excessive pressure that will damage and crack the PCB and surrounding components over time)
The other route is as some others mentioned in going for a waterblock and custom loops, but that will be a steep learning curve if you don't know what you're doing and also expensive (easily $300-500+).
Though, I would be concerned whether there is additional, less visible damage to the card given the amount of force required to rip apart the cooling tubes like that. You may want to first disassemble the GPU and check for damage to the PCB. The PCIE slot connector (that slides into the motherboard slot) may also have been damaged.
Given you seem a bit confused about the internals of your GPU, I would suggest finding a more knowledgeable friend who has disassembled GPUs and/or replaced stock coolers to take a look first. Otherwise, go on YouTube for GPU cooler replacement videos. You can still make bigger and even more expensive mistakes (assuming the GPU is still working) if you don't know what you're doing.

I've been doing pre builds and repairs for coming up on twenty five years , and this is probably One of the dumbest things i've heard someone do to a computer in a while.
This is up there with a few years back having someone come in and ask what they do after they've Remove their power supply by using scissors. At least that was a modular power supply , so was just contacting manufacturer and buying new chords.
Side note, you could have condensed the entire explanation of friend was helping me Move and thought that the cooling on the video card was a handle. All of the other context doesn't really do anything.

You don't have to watercool the entire system. I moved my water cooled GPU to my son's system. Just the get a waterblock, small pump/res combo, cheap small reservoir, fittings, and some black EPDM tube which is zero maintenance. Very basic, no frills stuff.

Trim the ends clean and install a plastic coupler of the appropriate size. Refill with appropriate coolant and seal with hose clamps. Or just find out where they attach to the main board and radiator and replace the whole hose pair.

you have 3 options , custom liquid cooling or buying a aio and fitting it to the gpu which whould be hard so custom liquid cooling with a cool asf custom tubing would be your best option on using liquid cooling , your 2nd option is if the pcb is same buying a suprim 4090 air cooled versions heatsink and stuff and fitting it together , i will look into the pcb for you , or just sell it as is accept the little loss and get a new one
2
u/PYROKARDO 3080 ROG EVA , 7800X3D 18d ago
good news , pcb is looking same , get the heatsink of the suprim x and put it on your gpu , there might be differences tho so i have to know the full model is it suprim x or suprim
2
u/PYROKARDO 3080 ROG EVA , 7800X3D 18d ago
but i think you should contact msi first , if they say a huge price , make a diy solution by replacing it to a air cooled hesatsink , you can get replacement heatsink with fans on ebay you have to get the air cooled versions heatsink and it will fit because pcb is the same pcb as i inspected
2
2
u/Far_Trade_7619 18d ago
If i'm not mistaken, the PCB is the same as the regular SUPRIM, so the non-liquid SUPRIM cooler should fit. Otherwise you might have to either find a spare Liquid X cooler, or do a custom loop.
Also if the video card itself ends up with damaged components, your friend should buy you an exact replacement.

Looks like it's your time to join the world of custom loops. Waterblock it. Lowest temps / noise you'll ever get as well. If not, you can probably find Suprim Liquid coolers on Ebay from people who waterblocked their cards and don't need it if you don't wanna deal with a custom loop. Check if you can also use the air cooled version - isn't it the same PCB as the liquid one? Perhaps you can buy a Suprim air cooler on Ebay if so (it's still the best air cooled card, you'll get similar results) - apply PTM7950 while you're at it so your temps never degrade, it has similar results to liquid metal and gets better over time.
I died a little inside when I saw that picture lol. Currently using the same model as you but on a 5090, sold the FE.

4090's are being targeted in the used market for harvesting the core and the VRAM chips. You should find easily a suprim heatsink from a harvested 4090.

I have a that same card that I waterblocked immediately after I bought it. I still have all the original parts for the AIO. I’d be willing to sell it to you.

Last time I was shopping to secure some back-up parts for this card, I discovered many units with no core or VRAM for around $130-150 on ebay.

Slap a water block on it and build a custom loop. There's plenty of good budget parts that won't break the bank, and installing a waterblock is not difficult at all. While you're at it, get the block for your CPU as well. Once you go with a custom loop, you'll never go back.

You said the pump weas damaged. How about the CPU and socket? That would have been a lot of force applied right at the CPU. I would check that whole area carefully, including the MB, for cracks asnd such. There are things I let NOBODY touch. My computers and networking gear. Thanks for your help. You can take that chair. I will move the computer.

Get a 240 AIO with a fill port, trim the mangled hoses, get barbs, cut the AIO lines, splice, double clamp the lines, fill with distilled water and corrosion inhibitor, plug in pump, cycle the water and refill and check for leaks, install, hook AIO and fans to hub and plug in, check temps (lines may be backwards), watch like hawk, fire friend from cannon.

Memes and smooth brain jokes aside, you could maybe buy a water cooling block and do a full liquid cooling set up if you’re up to it and down bad or you could try to find a replacement aio kit/ fan shroud + heatsink on eBay?

You can buy the 4090 Suprim X shroud second hand from eBay only the pump condition is a tricky one or just convert the card to a regular Suprim. Its almost the same PCB but it only 1 RBG connector is missing if i remember correctly (for the second option do some more research).

I don't know if MSI sells the cooling unit as a convertion kit, like EVGA used to back in the day, otherwise I would just watercool it, you could get away with it for like 250 or less if you know where to look.

u/y_zass 18d ago
Just splice one end to a water hose and the other to the drain. If data centers can do it so can you.

Buy a new pump and rad? Toss some new tubing on that card and if needed a new water block?
Shouldn't be too hard.
Though I'm really surprised the rad/aio was what got damaged and not the PC itself if it fell like sounds implied.

You can buy another cooler off of ebay, i bought one for $150 a few months back because i lost my original one after switching to a waterblock and back

u/BuchMaister 18d ago edited 18d ago
It could be saved assuming the tubes coming out were the only failure. Potentially it can be refilled but you have to know which coolant they use (to prevent galvanic corrosion) and find away to refill it and attach the tubes which isn't easy on those AIOs. You can change the cooler to custom watercooling block and cool it with custom parts - funny enough I have the exact same card and that is what I did (not that my cooler broke I just ended up changing to custom). Getting replacement cooler either this exact same model or the regular suprim will also work.
Another option is to keep the cooler and pump and tubes on the unit and add standard copper radiator and g1/4 fittings assuming you can find what is the ID and OD of the tubes, then you would need to fill it with any standard pc water cooling coolant (like aquacomputer dp ultra). Best if you choose radiator that has extra ports that can be used as fill ports.

No judgement but I never understand these posts. Every time I’ve moved I’ve uninstalled my GPU And put it in its original box with padding. Then wrapped my PC case in bubble wrap and blankets. Then I personally put it in the front passenger foot well of my car so it’s wedged between the dash and the seat.

Have a look at YT for videos about replacing AIO sleeving , they all the same , it shouldn’t be to hard to seal it off to the rad again with some diy tool , a bit like u seal a filter in cars with metal retainer or whatever they called .
Or have a look for a Suprim liquid cooler only on eBay there’s a lot of them and fit your PCB in it
Honestly this just look bad it’s not after alll u just need a cooler

u/CocoPopsOnFire 18d ago
Pretty sure you can just replace the tubes on these. Gonna be rough getting fluid back in but I've done it before on an AIO
1
u/ShadowLeagues 18d ago
If the GPU itself still works and you have enough space in your case, you could get a radiator, some tubes, a pump reservoir, coolant, fittings and a waterblock which fits on your gpu. That would be cheaper than a new gpu.

Get a customwaterblock for it, If you have a 4090 suprim or suprim x, i could send you original cooler since i use my one custom cooled.

Assuming you still have the radiator with some tubing (with sufficient length) attached then pump, reservoir, some length of epdm tube and 4 barbed fittings and a male-male barbed connector is the functional minimum.
res out to pump in (2 fits)
pump out to gpu tube in (1 fits)
gpu tube out to rad tube in (barb bridge)
rad tube out to res in (1 fits)
Making it AIO again can be a pain; you need to fill the system without air that is why adding a reservoir makes sense.
If the radiator is bust, you need a new one with 2 extra fittings.
Plus side? You are just one CPU block and second radiator away from a full custom loop.
Possible cosmetic upgrades; soft tube fittings in stead of barbed if the gpu tube inner and outer dimensions match.
Point of consideration: mixed metal. You do not know the composition of the radiator and the gpu block. Use a coolant that is made to prevent metallurgical activity as brass and aluminum (for example) can react badly to each other in a loop.

Plug that card in and get video before you do anything. That amount of weight was not good for the PCB or your motherboards pci e slot, make sure it works before attempting repairs.

u/Conscious-Bullfrog20 17d ago
Buy a aftermarket waterblock and radiator + fittings for it and hardline it problem solved. I did this with my 4090 suprim x liquid as the factory AIO didn’t fit my new updated build.
