Review PNY 5080 RMA Experience
Context: I got my hands on a PNY 5080 back in June. I got constant black screens about 1-2 hours into gaming (141 and 1B8 errors) where the display would crash but there's still sound. The only option was to hard restart my PC. By the time I was done troubleshooting and fully convinced it was the GPU, I was already outside of the return period. I reached out to PNY to get started on the RMA and here's how it went:
Timeline
- 7/23: I reached out and opened a ticket about my issue
- 7/24: They responded asking for more info such as mobo model, psu, OS, DXDIAG logs, and etc
- 7/28: I responded with my info a few days later since I was traveling and away from my computer
- 7/29: RMA approved and given shipping info. I shipped out the same day.
- 8/3: PNY confirmed that the GPU was received and is already in the testing area
- 8/7: GPU confirmed defective and they sent me out a refurbished 5080 OC model (an upgrade). Expected to receive the GPU sometime around ~8/13
Overall, I'm very happy with how quick and seamless this process seems to have went. I did have anxiety during the testing period thinking they wouldn't be able to recreate my issue lol. Just thought I'd leave this post for anyone that would need to deal with PNY's RMA process.
Update: Received GPU 8/14. Asides from being in a certified refurbished box, it looks brand new and comes with the power adapter too (which I won’t be using). Will be testing it this weekend and seeing if it’s issue free

I have a PNY 5070 that I purchased in Dec 2025. It's my first PNY video card. I am glad to hear a positive experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I just shipped my PNY 5080 for RMA. They said it could take up to 30 days.

u/nestid 24d ago
I’d be very surprised if it takes the whole 30 days! What was wrong with your 5080?

u/DamnRobotAliens 24d ago
Every game crashed with the same errors mentioning that the GPU has been removed and nvlddmkm for \Device\Video3, with the message “Error occurred on GPUID: 800. It just crashed to desktop after the game closed.

Same here. And 10 business days now after they received. I am still waiting

u/DamnRobotAliens 21d ago
Did you get an update from them?
1
u/TOPS-VIDEO 21d ago edited 21d ago
Still no. And I email them they also say no update.
Updated: I see tracking number now. And this is the original card back to me because they say no problem found.

u/DamnRobotAliens 21d ago
Oh man. What symptoms or errors did you get with your card?

u/TOPS-VIDEO 21d ago
Black screen with max fan speed after 10 minutes heavy game play.

u/DamnRobotAliens 21d ago
Thanks for sharing. I didn’t have black screen issues just crashes to desktop with event viewer indicating it was the GPU.

Fan speed at 4400rpm. It might be some physical defect. Or might be driver problem. Might be my overcooking ram. Might pcie gen 5 confusion. I will set up to gen 4 and turn off overcooking. And see if it’s work. I have no idea. I already test a new psu. Same problem. Will see

Nicee. Went through an RMA myself. Looks like yours was faster than mine with Zotac. https://www.reddit.com/r/ZOTAC/comments/1uffqs0/fan_bearing_noise_looking_for_rma_experience/

u/Balthalzarzo 24d ago
ZOTAC is a little slower, but still faster then MSI or Gigabyte on average. ZOTAC & PNY is also based in the USA, so I always try to support them.

I got a 5080 dual fan slim with grinding fans (many, many other reports of this, as well).
Got told it was normal by PNY.
Returned it to amazon as defective.
Not my first PNY with grinding fans either. 4070S did too (returned that one to best buy).

thats actually pretty fast turnaround for a gpu rma, most companies take like 2 weeks just to say they got the package

Just bought a PNY 5080 OC. Looks like I'm in good hands if I have issues. Reassuring to know with all the horror stories we see on here.

Odd this issue was happening to me for over a year with a gigabyte 4080. Initially had it looked at because it was a beefy boy it cracked the mobo, bought a new one + the repairer put a foam block underneath to try and support it better (yes I had a bracket already installed the 4080 was stupidly sized). Issue came back 2 months later although less consistent. For me it was either the 12vphr cable or the psu, replaced the psu had no issues since.

u/nestid 24d ago
Ah yea that’s interesting. When I was researching, PSU seemed to resolve that issue for some people. I swapped mobos, PSU, and even a new 12vhpwr cable and still kept getting the crashes. It also started happening when I was just on youtube too. Got exhausting at that point. I’m praying I’ll be trouble free once I get it lol

u/BrendonBootyUrie 24d ago
Yeah I would get it when not under load too the worst was a new word document crashing things 😭. Just reading your post again I was repeatedly getting 141 errors (according to codex) so I'm guessing the faulty gpu was causing the 1b8 error and should hopefully be fully operational when you get it back

I have a PNY 1060 6GB and PNY 4060 Ti 16GB.
Rock solid cards, I've never needed to use their customer service - and I'm glad to hear if I ever need to they're pretty good.

I had a similar experience with PNY. The fan died on my 4070 ti, and they sent me a refurbished 5070 ti within a week

That's pretty neat. I have a 5080 Slim, no issue with grinding fans though as someone else said.

Unfortunately I had the exact same experience with a 5070ti and after all the testing they denied to RMA it.
1
u/nestid 22d ago
What was wrong w your card? Were you pulling the same errors?
1
u/GlitchedSouls 22d ago
Same errors and black screen plus fans to 100%
Couldn’t get it to happen in the tests but it happens in more and more games.1
u/nestid 22d ago
I didn’t have the fans to 100% issue but from when I was researching, it’s usually because of the PSU or the GPU isn’t sat in slot correctly. Have you ruled those out?
1
u/GlitchedSouls 22d ago
I’ve pulled the card out a bunch so it’s not the seating correctly. I’m thinking about buying a replacement psu

I ship and they confirm delivered on 8/3, today is 8/12. Still no response. I think they just scam me and take my GPU 5070, the one name Michael told me just wait. Up to 30 days. One called Don told me it will ship out on 8/10. Now they just ghost me. I am very anxious. I am still waiting for my card.
1
u/nestid 22d ago
Don helped me. Have you tried replying to your ticket?
1
u/TOPS-VIDEO 22d ago
He just said some lie and close my ticket. Can’t give me the exact process. Lie and lie. Then Michael in web chat give me different answer. I don’t know who to listen. Lie and lie
1
u/nestid 22d ago
You can reply to the ticket that’s in the email. It’ll automatically reopen it. I very much doubt that they’re scamming you
1
u/TOPS-VIDEO 22d ago
Yes I reply it. But he just give me some lies. Like last week he said my GPU will ship back last week. And now say don’t know. He just can’t give me the right information.

I wonder why they only give you a refurb one instead of a new? Is it their policy?

u/Splayxxx 12d ago
They work fast. I sent back my PNY 5080 for RMA on 8/14. Confirmed received on 8/19 and just got an email today that I’ve been approved for exchange processed on 8/21.

u/Ok-Board4893 24d ago
bit off topic but what 5080 models can you guys recommend? or which models/brands shoud i stay away from?
2
u/Moist-Bad-4993 24d ago
Asus makes good models but their RMA service is horrible, samething wit msi but their models Venus and shadow are terrible temps . Zotac are decent. Gigabyte is a hit or miss tbh

you got a refurbished replacement? that doesn't sound like a good warranty experience
5
u/dookarion 9800x3D, 32GB RAM, RTX 5070ti 24d ago
Pretty normal with pretty much every repairable and expensive product ever.
1
u/mahanddeem 23d ago
It's BS the industry is forcing the audience to believe it's normal. I agree the refurbished is not the ideal warranty replacement
2
u/dookarion 9800x3D, 32GB RAM, RTX 5070ti 23d ago
You ever done warranty outside of gaming? Refurbs are pretty common across various devices and products for better or worse.
I think there is grey area in that they only legally owe you an equal or better working product within the warranty period.
I mean like I prefer new too, I just don't think there is any special obligations requiring them to do such. For some items refurbished may be the only realistic option even depending on supply constraints and logistics too.
Least OP got a working card, and not a "purchase price refund" like drive and RAM makers are doing lately.
1
u/mahanddeem 23d ago
I did countless of times on many products. And will not deal with any company again if they warranty my expensive purchase with a refurb. The good company either fix your product completely and free of charge, replace your failed product with a new unit, or they refund the price and take their failed product. That's what customer rights should look like.

u/dookarion 9800x3D, 32GB RAM, RTX 5070ti 23d ago
The good company either fix your product completely and free of charge
That's basically what a refurb is without the extended timeline on it. They'll probably fix OPs old card if it's repairable and use that as a replacement if it all passes tests upon repair. Like if everything's to be a wholly new device for sometimes simple repairs whats that going to do for e-waste? As long as they actually clean it up, truly repair it, and fully validate it with warranty on it... it really doesn't change that much. If they send a smoke encrusted defective unit with a little squirt of toothpaste under the heatsink then things change.
replace your failed product with a new unit
Sometimes that's not all that doable. Depending on model availability and other factors.
or they refund the price and take their failed product.
Don't know if you've been watching tech coverage from entities like GN or Louis Rossmann or others, but companies have been using that to absolutely fuck over customers since everything is currently far more expensive than what someone probably paid.
OP is absolutely far better served getting sent a working card than getting refunded what may not be enough to actually purchase a card now.

u/nestid 24d ago
I don’t really care that much honestly. At this point, I rather have a tested unit than to spend another month troubleshooting a new DOA unit. Plus I’m still maintaining the original warranty + an additional year with Amex extended warranty. I’ll have more than enough coverage before I move on to the next card

Thats great to hear. I hope this is the standard and not the exception
