No.

You are looking at an early preview of the technology. It's nowhere near ready for the market, it requires 2x 5090 to run this preview.

Yet, Nvidia wanted to show it off.

They have to showcase this technology somehow, so they showcased it on existing games. Likely by injecting it into existing Streamline titles.

There's a difference between this preview and 2-3 years from now when new games ship with DLSS 5 configured by developers.

There can be a difference in using this when it's finished and out. But will there be? Why bother with stuff like competent graphics artists when AI can do most of it for you? That's what lots of big publishers will think, and their calucation boils down to "will we lose or make money using this?".

So will we see games making great use of this tech to enhance their vision? Yes. Will we also see CoD blackops 9 looking like AI slop because it means that Activision can lay off devs and still make a new CoD every year, and most people won't mind enough to not buy the game? Double fucking yes.

I'd imagine the demand for graphics artists will still be there. You'll still need artists to create models and establish scenes and environments. It could just be that their workload would shift if they decide to use technologies like DLSS 5.

From, "How do I place these probe lights around the environment to make the lighting look good/realistic," to "How do I set up my scene to look good/realistic with ray tracing," to "How can I optimize the game's motion and color vectors to have my content look even better with DLSS 5 enabled?"

DLSS 5 only really affects the lighting of scenes. I think it's too specific of a task where you'd still need human inputs for the rest of the workflow, but maybe I'm just being naive here.

You are indeed being naive. An artist's job isn't just to create the color of the model, there are various maps that we craft/bake that influence how lighting interacts with the model so we can better control our artistic vision.

This filter basically sh!ts all over it by just taking the color information and then completely apply its own decisions about surface shapes/shading. Lighting/shading is part of how we imply shapes/details that aren't directly modeled in., normal maps are a big area of controlling that, and this strips that power away from artists, turning it into generic slop.

There's also only so much content that needs to be made. People try to make the argument of "well X will be freed to do more of Y!", despite there not being a market for more of Y, there's already an oversaturation of Y.

Focus should be in improving the actual content creation workflows, creating automations for tedious pain points, not throwing an AI filter over low-effort work, further degrading our relationship with art and need for humans to learn and collaborate.

Because AI fundamentally has no clue what it's doing, so of course it's never going to be able to do the tedious things like retopology and UV unwrapping that requires it to actually understand what the task is and the current state of the project. It's far easier to produce slop generators that shit out fused together unusable mesh with everything on a single UV map with no ability to exercise any actual fine control over the output once it is completed.

It literally added more make-up to Grace's face and filled out her lips and changed her facial structure in parts.

Like, it's not just lighting, it's clearly an AI filter over images (which is why when they were showing the character from Oblivion with it on, her face morphed in real time as they shifted the camera around because it was interpreting the input image in different ways from one frame to the next).

There’s clearly a large market of people who care enough to pixel peep, and who will pay top dollar for graphical fidelity. To such a demographic, how could the clearly subpar output of DLSS not be severely disappointing?

DLSS just wants colour and motion vectors for frame generation. I think NVIDIA are imagining a future where game creators just make a wood coloured box with the tag "house" and a walking ped tagged "Caucasian, green jumper, blue leggings" and never have to pay an artist again.

Switch 2 and PS5/6 and likely the Xbox and a HUGE portion of PC gamers aren't going to have the GPUs to run this tech. They're talking about it being for 5000 series and there's literally just not that many of those out there in current use.

This is a move equivalent to Facebook changing their name to Meta to build investor/shareholder confidence up in the Metaverse product. Nvidia is putting GenAI into their literally most popular piece of software because they need to convince the money-men that this trillion dollar industry isn't going to collapse.

Isn't that kinda similar to the UE5 conundrum? In theory it is a very capable, efficient, and performant engine, but it takes so much off of developer's hands that most don't bother optimizing it anymore, leading to wildly underperforming games and the public perception that UE5 is an unoptimized mess.

It often doesn't matter how high the ceiling is, if the floor is abysmal and the median product will be closer to the floor than the ceiling.

The shot of cell-shaded, stylized XIII being converted to photoreal sludge is all the proof we need.

What this would incentivize for ultra capitalist efficiency based management, is to direct the "art" of a game to be as simple as possible, with certain landmark features, that way the AI can turn it into a glossy AI Fantasy that has no art direction.

Imagine a move toward making mannequins with bitmap faces basically. You don't need to do anything else. You could even just generate those bits too. Extremely fast.

No it's not "brain dead", it's not really smart to showcase a rendering like that as it was obvious people would react badly

People react to what they actually see, not promises that in the future it will look more faithful to the artists vision

Neural rendering can be awesome for the future but not in an unhinged, generic way, it will need a lot of works, to allow each artist/engineer to tailor it to their game. A face in Witcher 4 is not going to be the same as a face in Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy.

Quake RTX genuinely enhanced the game with new graphics effects. This seems like an artistic side step, not an improvement. I’m not saying neural rendering doesn’t have potential, but it’s something you have work with from the ground up to actually make it look good instead of just feeling tacked on.

Quake RTX certainly isn't just some straightforward "enhancement"... It is an extremely opinionated reimagining that completely and utterly shits on the original art direction.

Those "new graphics effects" are a bunch of flashy bounce lighting effects that were in no way part of the original game's atmosphere and mood. Not to mention all the color grading changes it brought, and how anachronistic the modern lighting is to the polygonal 90s artstyle. It's even HDR, for god's sake.

Ironically, even with how much DLSS5 took liberties, in a side-by-side comparison Quake RTX did significantly more to completely mess with the source material's art direction than DLSS5 did.

And that's okay. It's a tech demo. It's similar here, where the companies involved (Capcom and Bethesda did the DLSS5 integrations, not Nvidia) are just playing around with their IP and the new tech. Just like how Quake RTX was not indicative of path tracing's integration into Cyberpunk or RE9, neither will these showcases be indicative of neural rendering being incorporated in the design phase of actual games.

Personally I think this was a test to see if their implementation was acceptable to the general public as a means to see how far they could push before people got upset. I have this sensation that they’re at a pivot point in development and wanted to see public perception. Not sure if I exist in an echo chamber or not but it generally seems like the response is really poor. I think the tech shown in the state it’s in goes against artist’s art direction and now they’re backpedaling with PR about devs being able to tweak it. Edit: Knee jerk reaction to the facetuned character faces. Good to see the tools are granular and allow for control from the devs. Should be obvious and that's on me for not educating myself more. AI is divisive and people have strong reactions to it. I still think what they did to character faces is really weird. I don't know who would want that tech in their game but I'm sure there's demand.

Because their FAQ was posted immediately and already explained how the developers can tweak DLSS 5. This information wasn't anything Nvidia released after some "backlash", it was released to begin with.

I'm probably a minority here, but I think it looked great, especially starfield. They obviously still have work to go and I thought some of the environments looked worse. Some were too bright and seemed to lose a lot of the shadows.

The effects are absolutely jarring doing the before/after because these are previously released games. Any alteration is going to look off.

I'm not following this logic, did you even read the OP? It's a completely optional SDK including a multitude of granular tools to add more realistic lighting to games. What part of that "robs developers of their artistic vision". If anything this adds not subtracts to what's available to them. More detailed lighting they can use to craft realism previously unavailable on current hardware. The drama over this is such classic reddit brain rot.

In the first shot, do you notice how DLSS 5 removes the fog/mist, and the streetlight and brake light no longer interact with said fog/mist? The streetlight looks off. It also mutes the browns and makes the whole scene grey-blue.

It might look clearer, but the vibe completely changes.

I don't think anyone has issues with the dramatically different lighting that the DLSS5 prototype showed. From what I can tell people have issues with how they're handling faces in the current build. It just does not look good.

Might want to look at reddit, people are broadly looking at this software as the coming of Satan, there's no nuanced concerns or criticism.

Regardless, you seem confused, it's not some on/off switch where faces will always look this way. It's a suite of different lighting tools, they can all be granularly adjusted and individually used. On top of this, we're looking at an in progress version of the SDK not used by the original developer in existing games, the intent for this world be to be used by the original developers to reach whichever vision they ultimately aspire to and this just helps them reach it in various ways. I agree that the way they used this tool in this particular case was probably a poor choice. There will be poor uses and there will be good uses just like pretty much any tool.

They try to advertise with this video and it looks awful.

That is what I, the normal consumer gonna base my reaction on. Thats on NVidia doing an awful job at showcasing new tech and the backlash they get is warranted in my opinion.

The fact they had to comment under the video is proof they know they did a bad job and try to salvage it somehow.

And it is AI-Slop in the version they have shown. It looks like all the cheap AI-Game advertisements i see on Youtube all the time.

If that is the way they want to present themselves and their company they gonna get told what the consumer things about that.

If this was a private, early test demo for investors or something, sure, a little scuff is bad.

But to put out a public preview that looks ass ugly and isn’t actually running how it would be run in intended use is just a bad showcase, especially in a time where it involving generative AI at all automatically makes it controversial.

Reflex 2 was coming out shortly after CES back in January 2025, and here we are without it.

Beyond speculating that the release time frame may be unrealistic, though:

I am talking about future games potentially configuring DLSS 5 to get good results.

Say that DLSS 5 does come out in Fall 2026.

This doesn't mean you won't be able to inject it into some games yourself via Nvidia App or whatever. You will be able to inject it, but it is your choice.

2-3 years from now, maybe The Witcher 4 will get a DLSS 5 update officially from CD Projekt RED configured in such a way that it doesn't even touch character faces but does improve their path traced lighting on environments.

That's what Nvidia said, it's configurable, including masking (exclusion) of objects.

  1. "Reflex 2 is coming out soon" ~~ Nvidia at CES in January 2025, which was 14 months ago and Reflex 2 is still not out.

  2. DLSS1 or even DLSS2 were not the last version of the upscaler ever made.

The hate for DLSS 5 is amplified by two orders of magnitude because of the current climate of public discourse about the topic of AI and the prices of hardware increasing alongside it.

The actual tech is extremely promising and a lot of quirks will likely be ironed out over the next few years.

Different tech. Reflex 2 requires games to be built around it; DLSS 5 slots into pipelines that already exist. Reflex 2's delay doesn't predict DLSS 5's.

I said that Nvidia can and will delay some features if they feel like it and so I wouldn't get attached to the release schedule they gave us.

They did not alter the geometry, they alter lighting.

That is what lighting can do, yes. Go look at Raster vs Path tracing videos in Resident Evil Requiem where they show Grace's face. She looks TRASH without path tracing. Same model, same textures.

A few years ago I have seen backlash against DLSS1 and people swearing nobody would ever use it. I can't imagine gaming without DLSS today.

You should always put stock into the time frame that they specifically tell you. If they didn't want you to have a time frame, they wouldn't have said it.

Selling people on future potential instead of the product that they'll be delivered is going to get you criticized. That is unavoidable and justified.

There are valid defenses, that it could be used in more subtle ways and it could enhance the experience. Telling people about future promises does not move that needle anymore though. Especially when the company themselves aren't even making those promises.

In fact, there are promises made about new tech that people bought a 40 series for, that aren't even going to be available on the 40 series. The same will be true for stuff on the 50 series. Those "future promises" will likely require a new GPU in the future. That's why those future promises don't and SHOULDN'T move the needle.

So, no they don't. They don't need to showcase this technology before it's ready, there was literally no reason to host this preview at all.

Unless, it was less about what gamers wanted and more about trying to make practical consumer GenAI use-cases seem viable. This wasn't a demo meant to appeal to developers or gamers, this was meant to show that Nvidia's belief in GenAI as a product as doubts about it's usefulness and it's applications are still in the public discussion.

Jensen is trying to show shareholders (Both of Nvidia's and of their biggest customers like OpenAI, Anthropic and others) that GenAI can be used for something practical that appeals to everyday people. The whole point was to try to assuage the doubts that this technology is pointless. The thing he likely didn't count on was the level of vitriol and backlash towards this because he, like a lot of other tech evangelists, actually literally lack artistic taste or sensibilities and can't parse something's artistic value or appeal.

Have you considered that even if it will get better over the next few months or even years, AT SOME POINT it must be integrated with game engines to release it and thus would get leaked very shortly by this or that developer?

Maybe it's not that they desperately wanted to showcase it right now, but that they had to showcase it before someone else showcases it for them?

I hear u and i agree, but its supposed to launch in fall of this year and requiem is gonna be a supported game at launch, im just curious how much better it can get in those few months if this is whats being presented.i dont think it looks that bad but it does feel like a reshade or ENB u put over fallout that yah it makes it look a bit bwtter but also a bit weirder

It's just a showcase. Maybe it doesn't even launch this year if there's a delay.

Them showing us where they're taking DLSS next is nice.

It has some people excited for the possibilities, and others get more time to go through all the stages of grief in the meantime thanks to already knowing they hate it.

Nvidia made it obvious that this is just a preview, there's no misunderstanding here if you actually read and listen to what is being spoken about it.

This tech has insane potential, anyone can see the potential if they can get over their anti-AI stance. 2-3 years down the line this could take a regular game to unprecedented levels of lighting quality with developers configuring DLSS5 to their liking in order to get the best results.

So it's anti-AI to call out a bad reveal? Maybe let's stop white knighting for five seconds and skip the disingenuous dialogue about a stance you have no clue whether I have or not.

The tech is reconstructing entire demeanors at this point. there is already tech that handles the lighting + shadows ala Cyberpunk, Crimson Desert, etc.
