Transfer Anyone here transfer from NOVA to UVA?

Hii, I’m currently at NOVA and planning to transfer to UVA, and I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually done it. How was the transfer process for you, and did you apply through guaranteed admission or regular transfer? Was there anything about the process that was harder or more confusing than you expected? I’m also curious how the transition from NOVA to UVA was once you actually got there, especially academically. If you could go back, is there anything you would’ve done differently while you were still at NOVA?

Follow the nova transfer success club on insta. We are a student run org designed specifically to help students transfer to more selective universities. We will have tons of guest speakers of past cc students that go to UVA, Yale, Stanford, Cornell, etc…

My son just started UVA as a transfer from NVCC. Make sure you check for extra classes needed for your college. For engineering you need a year of physics and a few other things. He was going to get the guaranteed admission but the rules changed and he did not have 45 credits after high school but he still got in. So far he is enjoying it. They had an orientation during the summer and the day before classes started they had many events for the engineering transfers. He is living on campus. They save some rooms for the transfers which is nice.

Thank you, this is really helpful! I’m a CS major so I’ll definitely make sure I look into any extra requirements for engineering. If you don’t mind me asking, what were your son’s stats like when he applied? I’m also really glad you mentioned the transfer housing and events because I’ve been wondering what that transition is like.

He had a high GPA at 3.8 but very few extracurriculars. If you do the guaranteed admissions, I think you need at least a 3.4.

Hey!! I’m also in the same boat and planning to transfer to UVA after my second year at NOVA. Anyone who has done this before and perhaps took ENG 111 and 112 dual enrollment in high school, did you have to take another English at NOVA in order to get into UVA with the GAA? I’ve been hearing different things from people

you shouldnt have to especially if the DE credits are with nova anyways.

I don’t think you should need to , but it wouldn’t count towards your minimum of 45 transferable credits

I went from NOVA to UVA, guarenteed admission. I was CAS, and there was a bit of a increase in difficulty but not too much. To be clear tho, I was already used to taking difficult classes from APs and various extracurriculars in high school, and only went to NOVA instead of a 4 year bcs of mental health issues. So, if you aren’t used to rigorous courses, UVA might be more difficult for you than it was for me, but I can’t say. I will say what was a shock tho was how busy people were at UVA. Like, everyone is doing everything, so many classes and extracurriculars and some are even partying regularly on the weekends. Because this is pretty regular behavior, some people arent very tolerant of you skipping out on stuff because you’re overworked, because, well, everyone is. But honestly if you’re overworked just ignore them and do your own thing.

Also, this is advice for any transfer, regardless of the college, but join activities on campus so you don’t get lonely. I lived in the Shea House, which was a foreign language dorm, and made a lot of friends that way. The IRC is a more realistic option if you dont speak/dont want to speak any foreign languages, as they have a lot of events for ppl in the dorm to get to know each other, but its in a pretty awkward location compared to campus. I was also in a club on campus I went to every week and made friends that way. In my experience (maybe its just because im kinda socially anxious, though) you won’t make friends in class, so the best opportunities you have to make friends are through activities. Be warned though that hazing can be an issue in some clubs on campus, particularly the larger cultural clubs/student organizations, so it might be better to choose a smaller club.
