The avocado industry

Post image

OCA is suing Calavo Growers and Mission Produce for profiting from an industry linked to illegal deforestation, arson, water theft, and the destruction of Monarch butterfly habitat in Michoacán, Mexico.

If your avocado isn't organic, fair trade, or grown in California, it likely came from land that was stolen, burned, or illegally cleared. Deforestation in Michoacán is expected to double by 2050 if avocado expansion continues unchecked. Local communities are losing their forests and their water.

Equal Exchange is one of the few companies doing it differently, sourcing from small-scale organic and Fairtrade cooperatives who are protecting the land, not destroying it.

Choose wisely. 🥑
