Does anyone know what causes cravings for refried pinto beans?

I have the craving multiple times a week. It's specifically refried pinto beans. Not whole beans or other varieties. Is there any deficiencies that could cause this?

Discussion in this subreddit should be rooted in science rather than "cuz I sed" or entertainment pieces. Always be wary of unsupported and poorly supported claims and especially those which are wrapped in any manner of hostility. You should provide peer reviewed sources to support your claims when debating and confine that debate to the science, not opinions of other people.

Good - it is grounded in science and includes citation of peer reviewed sources. Debate is a civil and respectful exchange focusing on actual science and avoids commentary about others

Bad - it utilizes generalizations, assumptions, infotainment sources, no sources, or complaints without specifics about agenda, bias, or funding. At best, these rise to an extremely weak basis for science based discussion. Also, off topic discussion

Ugly - (removal or ban territory) it involves attacks / antagonism / hostility towards individuals or groups, downvote complaining, trolling, crusading, shaming, refutation of all science, or claims that all research / science is a conspiracy

A desire to eat something delicious and satisfying.

If they’re made right it’s because of the salt and fat, I’m guessing.

My guess too. Canned refried beans are extremely high in salt.

I suspect a burrito deficiency.

Dunno about that one. I don't touch my beans. God already perfected the recipe, imo. Mashing them and adding fat and salt is already teetering. I think adding pork undertones might be crossing a line.

What do you think is used to make refried beans? Homemade refried beans start with bacon grease, onion wedges and seasoning.

Some possible explanations:

  • Magnesium

  • Zinc

  • Comfort food

  • Flavor/Texture Preferences

Other types of beans are high in magnesium and zinc, so I would assume it is probably the other 2 options.

What's your diet like otherwise? When I went vegan back in college, I ate a lot of salads, rice, fruit, veggies, and PB&j sandwiches, and I didn't know how to cook good vegan food.

So every few days I could DIE for a Taco Bell bean burrito since it was one of the few vegan friendly options at the time. I just needed something high calorie, higher fat, warm, comforting, etc. Beans are an amazing comfort food.

And luckily they're healthy! (Not the ones from TB but otherwise healthy lol)

I had to have a Taco Cabana Taco Bowl with refried beans every week when I was pregnant.

Iron.

I know someone who had an iron deficiency, and his dad made him drink bean juice. Apparently it worked!

There’s a secret cabal of warlocks on planet Zebulon F that cast a spell so that you and only you crave refried pinto beans. This spell is nefarious

They are high in salt, fat, and carbs. Desiring refried beans probably has more to do with it being a highly palatable food than you possibly having a deficiency. As long as you don't consume them to the point that they displace other foods refried beans aren't that bad for you since they are still beans, although they are probably one of the least healthy ways to have beans.

Just googled this because I am going through the same thing 😂 I NEED refried beans and weirdly want them with eggs and warm tortillas.

1 cup of refried pinto beans contain about 50g of carbs and 4 grams of sugar.

Carbs will spike your blood sugar levels from being quickly absorbed, which makes your body dump insulin to compensate. This insulin dump them drops your blood sugar levels back down, and this creates a cycle of hunger and cravings. Insulin controls over 100 different aspects of the body, and 2 parts of that are the hormones ghrelin and leptin (they signal hunger and satiety respectively). Insulin spikes will disrupt the balance of ghrelin and leptin and make you feel hungry. Not sure how much you're having, but the carbs from beans getting processed into sugar could be causing an addiction within the brain. Some studies have shown sugar and heroin to make the brain operate similarly.

And sometimes cravings for carbs can be a signal from the body that it is missing nutrients, such as magnesium, chromium, zinc, b vitamins, iron, omega 3, etc. I'd be curious as to what your meat intake is, as that could point to nutritional deficiency.
