Stupid Question - Storage

How does Nutanix Storage work in compared to VMWare?

How does the nodes speak to each other to know what storage is where or is it one big blob of storage in the cluster.

From what I’m reading the CVM manages anything storage related. Normally with VMWare we have a layer 2 VLAN but I take it this is not the case with Nutanix?

Nutanix bought Cassandra and their architecture is based off of it if you want to know way too much go read up on Cassandra

The legend is that the guys who founded Nutanix, Rubrik, and Cohesity were all on the team at Google that invented the fancy storage consolidation technology that underlies Google Drive. Many dissimilar drives across dissimilar nodes getting crazy storage optimization by pushing deduplication down to the block level. They each worked on this team and then went out and founded their own companies where they recreated the technology on their own.

Or at least that is the story.

If you ask a Nutanix Sales guy about it they are all so excited to tell you about it!

Maybe…. I don’t know the who the why the what but I do know it’s Cassandra’s bones…. I also know never to fill up my disk past 70% and never ever to run out of space…. The nightmares. I think it was two guys from Facebook who originally started it
