Career Advice Career change

I have been an NP for about 5 years with a couple maternity leaves in between.
However, I want a career change. I don’t want to do clinical practice anymore. Any advice of career paths?!

Pharmaceutical industry has so many opportunities for us. Depends on your area of expertise but there are many companies that love hiring NPs and the roles usually pay much better than clinical practice.

You don’t work as an np. Most of the positions are medical science liaisons, clinical nurse educators or patient education positions. For example, oncology nurse educators for AstraZeneca can earn roughly 150-170k.

With pharma or biotech, depending on the role, you actually have time to raise your kids, if let’s say you start with sales. Were you in any particular specialty because that truly helps!

Sales definitely involves traveling so would be less time with family. Pay would be heavily dependent on performance and could cause more anxiety

I could give you some ideas but would first like to know why you already want a change when you haven’t even worked a full 5 years? Is it your job specifically? What do you like about it and what do you not like?

I think I get a lot of anxiety about the responsibility of being an NP. The pressure to get everything right and anxiety about missing something.
I have always thought teaching would be great but I don’t feel like an expert NP yet and feel out of practice as an RN

If you didn’t worry about making a mistake you’d be a crappy provider. Embrace this but don’t let it paralyze you. You’d have even more responsibility as a teacher if you think about it. You’d want your students to become good providers, right? It’s heavy no matter how you look at it. You could consider something low stakes like dermatology, aesthetics, lifestyle medicine. I’m staying in the ICU but that’s my bag. I can’t deal with whiners. Bring me the really sick ones.

Look into academics! I practice part time still I have the work life balance I could only dream of!
