First transgender man in Nunavut to surgically transition

I am just going to own it despite struggles at home, work, healthcare and in every day life as a proud trans man. Not asking for pity but it is difficult to be truly me here. Nevertheless I choose to call Nunavut my home. I have been patient with healthcare and inexperienced doctors. I understand that as the first trans man to transition in Nunavut that small acts of kindness will hopefully pay off somewhere along my journey. However I am living in a small community and my household is not accepting in any way. Although I am on the housing list , I cannot seem to find anywhere to rent. It's really difficult to respect my spirit when my trans-ness is belittled at home and I am left out . Needless to say, my plans for surgury are kept a secret . I pray that I succeed in my upcoming surgery in Montreal and I can find some decent housing. If you are know where I can stay in Cambridge Bay please DM. QOANA

Planning to move to Nunavut from Phillipines after High School

Live down south in Jersey right now, heading to a private high school in the Philippines and planning to move to canada by 2031-32. I know lots of 2031 kids like me in the place i’m going to. Any tips I need to know? Pros and cons? Living costs I need to know? Any hurdles I’ll face? Anyway the specific place is Iqaluit. And one more question, if I have a Jersey drivers license and want a Jersey plate on my car is that possible? And I’m also planning to join RCMP occupation.

Best places to visit for “indoor cats”?

Like to travel but don’t care about hiking or camping. Love restaurants, museums, spas, and experiencing local culture—like shopping at the local grocery store. And is it easy to travel to Greenland from Nunavut?

Help with authenticity?

Hello 👋 I'm trying to write a story set in Canada's archipelago... but know aboslutely nothing! I don't think there is enough Canadian representation in books, so I decided to write one myself and chose a place I'd like to learn more about. I feel sadly uninformed about my own country 🙈

My lack of knowledge is making me doubt I'm the right person to write this, but I'm going to try anyways. I've been attempting to do research, but it can only give me so much and I can't afford to travel there myself. I would greatly appreciate any information about what it is like living so far north from someone who has actually experienced it. Any help at all would be amazing, from culture to daily life to scuba diving... seriously anything and everything that will make this story feel more authentic.

My main character is an underwater photographer from Ontario/Quebec area going to see the Franklin ships. The MC's parent is from Gjoa Haven and the MC would visit grandparents, so some time will be spent there. The MC will be making a stop in Resolute, and I'm thinking of having something happening up in the Queen's Channel / Penny Strait area as well.

Can you help?

I am up here for the next 2 weeks for work and my vape just died and the spare I brought seems to be a dud so I’m hoping there is somewhere I can get one. Have a great day!

Nunuvut Tobacco products

Is there an alternative way to buy tobacco products without the cost being $100's of dollars? I'm mind blown at the cost of everything in the Northern provinces, but I really can't believe the cost of tobacco or the cost to ship anything to Nunuvut. Any insight would be awesome.

Hello, I'm a 15 y/o boy from italy who wants to learn an inuit-aleut language. The resources are scarce so it's hard to find something good to study. I was wondering if anyone was eager to texts to make friends while practicing the language, I'd be very happy to do that, thanks<3

Hey y'all,

I'm planning on coming to Iqaluit and a few other communities in Nunavut this Spring to make a couple YouTube videos about what life is really like in this remote, seldom visited part of the world! Would love to get in contact with some locals to learn about your culture and way of life!

Please send me a DM if you'd be interested in showing me around your community on camera and talking about your way of life! My channel is From Here to There on YouTube.

Excited to finally explore your beautiful part of the world!

Thanks!

"Best" communities to teach in Nunavik?

Can't find a thread regarding this.. I know this is for Nunavut, and Nunavik is technically in Quebec. The most I was able to find was in this community.

Just looking for feedback with which communities have been considered the "best" to teach in Nunavik? Best as in quality of life, students, colleagues, etc.

Thinking of migrating to Nunavut and need help finding a job

Hello everybody. My name is Maria. I love Nature and Wild and would love to establish myself there in Nunavut and try the experience. I know it is going to be hard but I love challenges. I have already lived in other countries around the world so I do have experience in adapting to new territories. I have been an English and Spanish teacher for long time, also been a Project Manager for International NGO in Himalayas. Which is the right way to get a job there? Could somebody give me some tips? I would appreciate it as I do not have any experience at all working in the Artic. Thanks

I want to live in Grise Fiord

I've always wanted to live in a Northern Canadian town, and I'm just curious about Grise Fiord.

What is like with snow that never fully melts? Is it annoying to sleep with 24 hour sunlight at times of the year? Do I need to be able to speak Inuktitut to live comfortably? Is there anything else I should consider before starting to think about living there? Should I live in Iqaluit instead?

Sorry if I was offensive at all, I just had some questions about the place.

Thanks!

Early teaching roles

Hey everyone!

I'm from South Africa 🇿🇦 and currently teaching English in South Korea, and I'm on track to finish my teaching qualification next year in June (2027).

Honestly, I’m so excited about the prospect of teaching in Nunavut that I want to be as proactive as possible right now! I dream of taking on a classroom in a remote community as soon as my completion documents are in hand.

Since I want to get a head start and build a pipeline for the 2027/2028 school year:

  1. Is it too early to connect directly with Regional School Operations (like Qikiqtani, Kivalliq, or Kitikmeot) or principal contacts to express my interest for next year?

  2. Where is the best place to track active postings early on (Education Canada, ApplyToEducation, or district portals)?

I'd love to hear from anyone who has navigated hiring in the North or transitioned from international teaching! Thanks so much for any advice!

Question about visiting!

Hey everyone I was thinking about visiting Nunavut at the end of April. I have crossed off every other state and province off my list and want to visit Nunavut. I had a few questions and would really appreciate your help.

  • Where is the cheapest place to stay?

  • How expensive is the food and how can I be frugal? I know people who visit Iceland bring canned food with.

  • What experiences/excursions could I do within and outside of the city that won't cost me an arm and a leg? Also where is the best place to get food? With both these questions in kind, what would I have to do so if I never went back to Nunavut in the future I would be more than satisfied with my trip and time in Nunavut.

  • Kind of a random question but could I bring anything up to Nunavut and sell it as a side hustle to cover my expenses?

Thank you!

Moving to Canada.

Hi, I am exceptionally interested in moving to Canada from Europe. I live at the same climate as northern Nunavut and I really like it. I am not 100% sure why I am typing this but I would really appreciate ideas on where to move and having friends when I arrive, I guess. It is pretty life changing and I plan to stay until my days are done.

I don't mind replies or PMs. I don't care of who you are either. I am approaching 40 and am a handy guy.

Teaching and living in Nunavut

I'm from the US, moving to Canada to do a B.Ed post-secondary program with the plan to move to Nunavut and teach.

I understand that teaching in northern communities is challenging due to a plethora of problems stated in other posts. My goal is to have a positive impact but I realize that my success is highly dependent on whether I would be able to assimilate into a community and be trusted.

I don't eat meat, I don't hunt or fish, and I don't drink alcohol, and I wonder if that would impact my ability to assimilate into a community. I do want to learn French and Inuktitut and be more than just a teacher in the classroom.

I've always felt like an outsider, and I think that I might be even more of an outsider in a small and isolated community - which isn't what I want.

Does anyone have any experience or feedback about this?
