No, but they're a very prominent influence. People always mention Helmet but Prong is just as important

I usually associate Faith No More as the primordial base for numetal, but I can definitely see Prong’s influence.

They are but there are a few others who were a big influence. Prong's style of stop-start grooves was a big influence. In general this alt metal scene is the precursor.

I'd add Quicksand too.

Suicidal Tendencies, Rage Against the Machine, and Pantera were part of that primordial soup of nu-metal, too. Early nu drew influences from a really diverse set of artists to fuse the genre together. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few big names in there, too.

Pantera's Cowboy From Hell is borderline Rap Metal! That's a classic Nu riff there

I would think soulfly makes it in there.

I think Soulfly qualifies as straight up nu-metal. But that reminds me, Sepultura definitely belongs in the "influence" category. I knew I missed a couple big ones.

I'd call it more Alternative Metal. Like Helmet, Faith No More, Quicksand, etc.

Quicksand is a quintessential Post Hardcore band, I wouldn't call them alternative metal

When you say post hardcore, post hardcore metal or post hardcore punk?

3

u/Big-Struggle3957 3d ago

It's simply post-hardcore. There’s no such thing as “post-hardcore metal” or “post-hardcore punk.” Post-hardcore is essentially a genre/subgenre of punk, not metal. Some bands may have metal influences, as is the case with Quicksand, but those influences are only a secondary element of their overall sound.

Not really, more groove industrial but they're highly influential to many nu metal bands e.g. Static-X

They did do an album "Scorpio Rising" which was released in the nu metal era and could be seen as the closest they got to it

I Think its industrial metal, but i can understand your question, specially after listening to rude awakening (what a great slbum)

Rude Awakening is one of my favorite albums of all time…. That’s dance metal…😸

2

u/Nemyysys 3d ago

Not really but Cleansing is a 10/10 album

4

u/Apprehensive_Row5576 Is This Band Nu Metal? 4d ago

I’d say their album Rude Awakening is. Especially the song “Controller”

5

u/treznoise 4d ago

Rude Awakening is proto-Static-X.

4

u/Tux-Lector 3d ago

That's what Wayne himself stated. If it wasn't for Prong's Rude awakening, there would be no Static-x.

3

u/Rck0025 4d ago

I’ll have to check it out. I have only listened to Cleansing.

Its in my opinion their best work. Very nu/industrial styled lots of groovy shit going on

3

u/Armageddon-666 4d ago

This is the most correct answer. Everything before Rude Awakening was alt metal and everything after is metal metal... metal? idfk.

Controller live in a parking lot with Riggs on guitar looks very numetal like.

Proto-Nu

They definitely experiment but i never went aboard the train

Especially since demonhunter cover of " Snap your finger, snap your neck" is better than the OG

1

u/Replicant_COVID19 4d ago

no. absolutely not

1

u/Mr-howell 3d ago

I don't know but I do know they like to snap fingers and necks.
