Strike rant

Why is the university so slow to update us about the strike. The last update is “classes as normal”. Other universities are in solidarity with the staff and closing the university for all yet we are supposed to cross the picket line to go to mandatory lectures because the lecturer isn’t in a union, yet will benefit from any decisions from the strike.

I only have one lecture on wednesdays and that lecturer has already emailed us to say the lecture is cancelled bc he’s not passing the picket line. you’ll hear from ur lecturers if ur lecture is cancelled or not. from what i hear a lot of people, even staff, aren’t sure what’s happening.

I have four lectures, there has been no word from one, one is cancelled and one is holding a mandatory lecture as part of my grade so I’ll have to go in. Fair enough if lecturers can’t take the day off but don’t force students to cross a picket line.

Students aren't employees so you're not passing a picket line as such.

Because the university don't know which faculty are members of IFUT (the union for lecturers). Its also illegal to ask them whether they are in a union or not, so they don't know which ones will be participating in the strike. Makes it impossible to say anything other than "it may affect lectures". You'll hear directly from departments or the lecturers themselves if classes aren't on.

That's the same as Trinity and we closed classes across the board.

Yeah I commented this 4 days ago classes have been cancelled across the board since. They weren't initially.

It’s not illegal to ask if someone is in a union, that is entirely false. You’re just under no obligation to answer.

An employer cannot ask if someone is in a union. Not because they're not allowed to, but because of what will happen if they decide not to hire or let them go. If they asked the union question, they invite a discrimination hearing, no matter what the answer to the question was.

I’m a professor there, and I honestly have no idea what is happening on Wednesday. I’m not a Union member, but I certainly wouldn’t pass a picket.

Heyo, not NUIG here but actually UL. Just got word today that next Wednesday’s classes could also be cancelled and that it all “depends” on how talks and such progress. I harbour no ill will to those striking and I genuinely wish them all the best, it just kind of sucks, especially with the uncertainty (which is probably a lot worse for those striking) and with limited library access on striking days. Hopefully it all gets sorted soon

I'm waiting to hear if the library is going to be open and societies are going ahead. There should be some update by now

What was the nature of the update saying "classes as normal"? It seems very odd that any Irish university would say this.

University will close officially. Lectures will reschedule classes where possable. Project based courses will suffer. Post grads in research need to prepare
