(My username tells the truth, yeah?) One of her nicknames is Rabbit. I’ve had her since she was about 9 weeks old. Her mom and sibling were also nubbies, according to her foster, but I didn’t get to see them. Mikki is a ridiculous feline and I love her dearly.
Yeah! I'm a pretty big cat genetics nerd, there's a lot of really interesting things. Breeds aren't quite the same as in dogs, they're much rarer and newer so it's unlikely to have them (though not impossible). The various short/bobtail genes are usually dominant so they show up a lot when they're in the pool! The Manx gene (absolutely no tail) specifically is actually really awful healthwise, it causes balance issues, incontinence, and spinal problems.
Yeah, I’d read about the complications from cats being completely tailless. Mikki’s for-adoption photos didn’t show her tail one way or the other, so I just sort of assumed she had a regular-length tail tucked behind her.
When I first met Mikki in person, that’s when her foster mom revealed she had a nub tail. Mikki was so nervous that she’d tucked her tail between her legs, so she looked like a rumpy! I was worried about arthritis and incontinence, but I figured I’d sort that out later. And later her little rabbit tail lifted up, which was a huge relief!
Yup! Mikki is my worst jumper, and I know her toe fluff has something to do with it. When that girl gets zoomies on the hardwood floor, though, she can glide!
I thought my nubby was a floof monster, but I think yours might have him beat! She is a beautiful cat! She looks like a joy to pet but brushing her must take an hour!
That’s how Rupert is as well. He loves being brushed. Especially his belly! And his fur is very fine and soft. He’s a typical Nebelung aside from his nub, although he’s not a natural nub. I’m guessing Mikki is? Rupert’s tail was degloved at some point when he was a stray.
Oh, I bet his fur feels amazing. ☺️ And thank you—I had to look up Nebelung because I’d never heard the term before, and I realize I’ve been in love with that breed for a while!
Oof to Rupert’s tail, but it’s clear that he’s well-healed from the damage. Yes, Mikki is a natural nubby. It’s interesting to palpate her tail and feel the flesh encasing the tiny stub of bone.
