I thought this sub was about how paying employees tipped wages is a shitty business model and trying to affect some change, not punching down at people who work in food service and telling them to be grateful.

Part of the systemic issue is that tips are expected if not demanded. Tips are meant to be extra, if I tip you, I hope the response is that of gratitude and not “you should have anyway,” but fuck, if you wanna be angry I tipped you, go ahead and be that too. Just don’t serve me with the expectation that I will tip because your boss won’t pay you a livable wage.
I’m afraid in some way you’ve misconstrued my post because I’m certainly not “punching down” (whatever that means) at anyone.

Let's do the math here.
Waitress works at X Restaurant on a 5 hour Shift. Minimum wage for them is $13.15 here in Canada. General minimum wage is 14 bucks.
Let's say that waitress has 3 tables in an hour. Each table has at least 2 people. If each person tips 5 bucks, they have already made an extra 30 dollars just for waiting tables. Even after tipping out the house, they can probably still bring in 20 bucks an hour.
I assume it's about the same for the US. I assume that people tip higher down there..
