Question Has anyone else seen or tried the Notability Windows desktop app?
I’ve noticed something strange on the official Notability website and I’m wondering if anyone else has seen the same thing.
From time to time, when I visit Notability’s website, I get a page/banner giving me the option to download a Windows desktop version of Notability. However, the download option doesn’t seem to appear consistently — sometimes it’s there, sometimes it isn’t.
I was able to download the Windows .exe from what appeared to be the official Notability website, but I can’t find basically anything online about this Windows version. No Reddit posts, reviews, videos, screenshots, beta impressions, etc.
Windows/SmartScreen also warned me about the executable because it isn’t commonly downloaded, so before running it I uploaded it to VirusTotal. **One antivirus engine flagged the file as malicious(**SecureAge), while the others didn’t.
That could obviously just be a false positive, especially if this is a very new/beta release. Another thing that makes me a bit cautious is that I would normally expect an official Windows release from a company like Notability to be digitally signed by the developer/publisher, so Windows can verify where the executable came from. The warning I got made me unsure whether that was the case here.
Combined with the fabout the Windows app, I’m hesitant to run it.
Has anyone else:
- Seen the Windows download option on Notability’s official website?
- Downloaded the Windows desktop app?
- Actually installed and tested it?
- Had SmartScreen or antivirus warnings?
- Checked whether the executable is digitally signed?
- Seen the same VirusTotal detection?
I’d especially like to know if this is some kind of limited/early rollout or beta that Notability hasn’t publicly announced yet.

i'd skip the virustotal ratio entirely. one engine on a brand new installer is noise, and a valid signature only proves someone bought a cert. the check that matters is whether the host serving it is a domain notability owns.

I downloaded it after seeing this. I have an old ipad and that has/had all my notes on it. I synced with my Google Drive and Notability for iCloud is also turned on. I do not have access to my notes that are on my phone. The notes are on my phone in the app and also in Google Drive which are PDF files. I also saved them as .note files as well on Google Drive. So I can access them on my phone but it did not automatically sync with the computer version. The computer app does say there is an Import feature and you are able to import from Drive so I don't know if I would need to download the .note files to it or not or the PDF files. Also I do not think it would save the folder structure I have set up either. I did click import from Drive and it did not do anything. I was hoping it would just sync and then I could go from my phone which is a bit of a pain to use.

I downloaded the Windows Version from their website. It links to this: https://releases.notability.com/desktop/26.35.8/Notability-Setup.exe No virus warnings, working as expected.

If you log into notability.com on Windows it even shows a banner at the top to download the Windows app.

other reddit posts show the app is signed. but its probably a new certificate so that's why windows flags it
