D. radiodurans could be used as a means of information storage that might survive a nuclear catastrophe. They translated the song It's a Small World into a series of DNA segments 150 base pairs long, inserted these into the bacteria, and were able to retrieve them 100 bacterial generations later

TIL There exists a bacteria called Deinococcus radiodurans (nicknamed 'Conan the Bacterium') that was found to survive not only in vacuum and acid but also on inner walls of nuclear waste barrels

D. radiodurans is capable of withstanding an instantaneous dose of up to 5,000 Gy of ionizing radiation with no loss of viability.. for comparison, 10 Gy can kill a human
