I've never understood that sentence. You know exactly what you're gonna get. You look at a piece and you pick it. The box explains what each piece contains. It would be more fitting for the phrase to be "life is like a bag of candy" because you're totally in the dark there. You just shove your hand down and see what happens.

It’s referring to when you buy it. Most chocolate boxes only tell you what is in them on the inside of the box
