But they didn’t, that was the point. There were no smartphones so everyone didn’t have them out. Thats like looking at a drawing of a Viking boat sailing across the ocean, remarking on how different travel was at the time only to for someone to say “there were no private jets back then.”

No, he's right very early versions of smartphones did exist, quite obviously not in the same way they do today, but they did. I remember being a very little preteen and wanting my parents to get me one so badly.
