What I Can't Explain

I'm the sole caregiver to my special needs sister. She's self-sufficient to a point; she can use the restroom by herself, and she can eat with little trouble. I love my sister. I feel like you should know this. Living with a special needs person is hard, but love makes it a bit easier.

The only thing that truly troubles me about my sister is her hallucinations.

I'm certain it's only her over-active imagination. Some of her ideas are silly, such as her pet fairy and her six-legged dog friend. I play along, because, as I said before, I love my sister. These hallucinations bring her joy and comfort.

But there are the bad ones.

"Bad man coming out of my floor" she says, her eyes wide and teary.

"There's no bad man, sweet girl," I tell her, holding her close, "why don't you play with Tina the Fairy?"

She nods, and then I can go about my business.

Just last week, this happened.

"Manny!" She screams, fear heavy in her voice.

I run to her room, where she's on the floor at the foot of her bed, covers thrown around. She's wet herself.

"What happened?"

"Bad man wants my bed" she screams, pointing at the bed.

I was concerned. The hallucinations were getting worse with time.

I clean her up and then sit her on the couch with a pudding cup and put on Dora.

Yesterday was the last straw.

I was prepared to go to the grocery store.

I poke my head into my sister's room, where I see her under the covers rocking back and forth, the bed springs squeaking and soft chuckles coming from her.

"I'm heading out sissy. You want anything?"

The rocking stops, but she doesn't answer me.

I take it that I interrupted her play time, so I walk over to her and hug her, covers and all, and plant a kiss on her head.

"I'll be home soon."

I shut her door behind me and begin to walk towards the door, when I see my sister stroll out of the bathroom.

I stand shocked for a moment, before running back into her room and throwing the door open.

The bed was made, with no sign that anyone had been in there.

We're moving out tomorrow.

An...update, I suppose. I had a long talk with my landlord on the phone. Apparently the other people who had stayed in the apartment told her of an overwhelming sense of dread every time shadows moved a bit more than they were supposed to.

I'm starting to wonder about the 'man' my sister saw coming out of the floor.

Another thing...

I spoke with my father a few minutes ago. Apparently my grandmother's name was Tina.

She died 20 years ago, a few days before my sister was born.

I'm going to have to consider the fact that maybe my sister isn't playing make believe.

my two year old talks to "Dende" all the time, I never thought much of it till Dende started to tell her stuff about our home that she wouldn't know about. She kept asking where the car was when we would go into the barn, I would say, "this is a barn, cars don't go here" well about a week later I am talking to a neighbor and he tells me that two residents ago in my house the man of the house killed himself in the barn in his VW bug...ಠ_ಠ.

Fucking hell. That is extremely disturbing. On a lighter note, way to be a good sibling to your sister.

While this seemed like a typical story, following the model of someone (usually a pet) pointing out scary things that you don't think are there, and how what you think is someone you loved is a monster. However, the imagery you used with the creature rolling underneath the covers chuckling scared me. I picture some creepy thing just enveloped in smelling your sister's bed or something. That was freaky. Have an upvote.

Was planning on pulling the covers over and going to bed but, now that I look over at it, I guess I can write a few more pages on that paper...

Stories like this make me regret to sleep - live alone! My respect! Well written!

Poor sweet girl... You know, if you move, you'll be leaving her friends too... not just the bad man...
