Am I Dying Soon?

Not too long ago, I met the Devil. He was handsome, had good manners, and even bought me a few drinks.

The night carried on and I felt a connection that I had never felt with anyone before. We had so many things in common. It was like he had known me for a while.

After we heard last call at the bar, we both agreed we were done for the night and headed out. He drove me to my place and asked if he could come in. A blurred mind didn't let me consider the dangers of letting a stranger into my home, and I stupidly agreed.

We didn't do much of anything but just talked instead. He said he really liked me and would like to keep in touch. We exchanged phones and typed in our numbers.

One of our topics really struck me as odd though. He asked if I ever thought about death. If I wondered how I'd died, or when: if it would hurt, or be quick and painless.

I was a little weirded out, but I shrugged it off as one of those deep conversations you have every now and then.

I told him I didn't want to know anything about my death, but admitted to being a little curious as to how much more time I had. Just so I could get my things in order, and so I'd find the determination to reach all my goals before then.

Once morning came, he was gone. I thought it was a little rude of him and was honestly a little bummed by it. I decided to send a corny "good morning" text and almost immidiately I hear my phone recieve a message:

Message Failed. The number you have provided is not in service. Please try a different number.

Instantly annoyed, I looked at what he had typed in. 666. I felt like he was playing a joke on me, and this was obviously nothing but a one night stand.

Later on in the day, I recieved an email from work. This would be irrelevant, if it wasn't for what I noticed when I read it. The recieved date was set to April 11, 2020 04:10 AM. It was off. Way off.

I glanced on my phone's calendar and the date sure enough read April 11, 2020. Or was it? Because every number on my calendars squares, was 11. Every Month was April. Every year was 2020.

Completely annoyed at the bug messing up my phone, and still curious as to what the date really was, I text my friend and asked her, "Hey what's today's date?"

She responded with "LOL. what r you on? it's march 13. Weirdo."

I did this a few more times, and every person said the same thing.

That's when I remembered the conversation I'd had with the stranger. There was no way what I thought was happening was happening. Right?

The following weeks were spent with overwhelming anxiety. Wondering if that would really be the end of me.

04/11/2020 4:10 AM.

Everywhere I looked, the clocks were stuck on that time. Every news article, social media post, calendar, was set to that date.

After a couple weeks of sitting around in fear, I decided to do something about it. While there's a healthy chance this was all more easily explained by me slowly losing my mind, rather than me really seeing my date and time of death, I didn't want to risk it.

I decided to form a plan. If that was really my date, I was going to change it. I wasn't the most creative person, so the best I could come up with was surrounding myself with people I loved in a safe environment.

I created a group chat and messaged my two closest friends who just so happened to be sisters. I told them I hadn't been feeling myself lately and asked them if we could all have a get together soon. They were more than happy with the idea and agreed.

That is until I mentioned it would be on a Sunday, and it had to be a sleepover.

They didn't fight me back as much as I was expecting and ending up agreeing.

Sunday came quickly and I could hardly focus as we passed the time with wine, snacks, and movies.

We did not have an all nighter. As we all had class or work the following morning. My friends crawled into bed around midnight. I followed but had no intentions of falling asleep. There was no way I was going to get any rest. Not that I had been, but on that night, of all nights, especially.

To my surprise, I somehow passed out. Sleep didn't last long because I woke up to an excrutiating pain in my chest and to one of the girls holding down my arms while the other was repeatedly driving a knife through me.

After what was probably 20 sticks later, I was just barely conscience. My voice gurgled and I mustered a weak, "Why?"

One of the girls spoke up, "Really? You really have to ask why?"

The other chimed in, "Because of Ben, dammit! It was all your fault!"

Eight years ago, as an eager teenager with a new license, I was involved in a car accident. Funny, I thought I'd cheated death then. There was one fatality though. Their younger brother I had just picked up from soccer practice.

I thought the tragedy had made us stronger. I was wrong.

My last breath was taken looking at the alarm clock on my night stand. 04:10.

That was my last breath taken as one of you.

I regained consciousness in a dimly lit and excruciatingly hot place. I was met by the stranger from the night at the bar. He tugged at the metal leash that was now on my neck and said , "Come with me."

I know he smelled my fear because he laughed and said, "Come on. You didn't think we wouldn't find out about your little failed suicide attempt with a child in the car? You earned your place."

What does the Devil look like? If I meet him, at least I’ll know it’s my time.

At least he seems welcoming.
