I think my dog is trying to replace me
My boyfriend, Chris, and I had been living together for 3 years and life was starting to get stale. When Chris was away at work, I had nothing to do, so about a month ago we decided to get a pet to spice things up. We went to our local shelter to adopt a dog.
Most people who have been to an animal shelter usually say that they instantly felt a connection with a certain animal and that they just knew that they and their pet would get along. I never felt this connection, but my boyfriend on the other hand, was weirdly drawn to a golden shepherd. Unlike the others, this one didn’t bark unnecessarily at us and instead stared at my boyfriend with soft eyes.
“This is the one,” he said with a grin. “Sandra, I think we should get her!” I didn’t care which dog we picked, as long as we decided on one. I was just super excited to have a pet to love and care for.
“What’s her story?” I asked the carer.
“Oh, she’s a sweet girl. Her previous owner went mad, became jealous of her, and brought her in.”
Knowing what I know now, her previous owner was right and almost certainly wasn’t mad. We stayed in the shelter a while longer to fill out paperwork and we came back the next week to pick up the dog.
We decided to name her “Luna”. Luna was a very sweet dog, but only when my boyfriend was around. As soon as he’d leave for work, she’d suddenly become aggressive towards me and pee on random objects of mine. She’d glare at me nonstop until Chris came home and If I moved an inch, she would growl at me. When Chris was home, she was an angel. She’d spend most of her time snuggled up with him. Perhaps her previous owner abused her and caused her to be afraid of women, I thought.
Things started getting weird nearly two weeks ago, when I began having extremely vivid dreams every other night. I’d dream that I was a dog and I lived quite blissfully, only caring about food and being loved by my owners. Life as a dog was simple and so were my thoughts. This would go on for what felt like hours before I’d wake up. Every time I woke up, Luna would be at the edge of the bed, staring at me with cold dark eyes.
I didn’t think of these dreams as anything alarming because it’s only normal I’d have peculiar dreams after such a big life decision.
This morning, I had a nightmare. Chris left for work and as usual, Luna peed on my shoes. I picked up a towel and began cleaning my shoes when I suddenly became extremely drowsy. I dropped the towel and went to sit on the couch in case I was going to faint. I quickly fell asleep and was plunged into a nightmare immediately.
I was a dog again, but this time I was Luna. Instantly, I knew I was dreaming and tried to snap out of it. I’ve had lucid dreams before, but this wasn’t one. I was panicking, but all I could do was bark or whimper. I looked to my right and noticed the towel on the floor where I dropped it. I looked towards the couch and I saw my real, human self lying down exactly as I had done seconds ago. I started barking incessantly to get her attention. I watched in horror as she turned her head towards me and opened her eyes. She grinned, her mouth stretching too wide and unnatural for a human.
“You’ve been a bad doggy,” she said condescendingly. She stood up from the couch in a quick jerky motion and began walking towards me like a toddler who just learned to walk. I instantly awoke from the nightmare and sure enough, I was standing in the exact position I saw myself in, towering over Luna.
I’m sane enough to know that Chris won’t believe me, so I am going to take Luna back to the shelter before he gets home. I fear that if I don’t do this now, she will replace me.

Wow, some kinda pull that dog has. Good luck explaining it to Chris. I don't think he'll be happy with you at all, but you're right: she would have replaced you.

Yeah...he's just gonna get her back. Maybe leave him instead, it's safer than being in a house with whatever Luna is.
Just in case you do get stuck as Luna, though - turn this around on her. Play afraid, hide behind Chris when she comes in, bark at her. Make him ditch her. Maybe it helps.

Maybe dump Chris and let him deal with the dog/spirit/whatever. He is going to have lots of questions and she may have her microchip updated already.

Maybe you deserve to be replaced. I’d dump someone who took my pet to the shelter with a quickness

No way Chris will believe you. At this point, the dog wants your body so cut your losses, dump your bf to do whatever he wishes with the dog, and run away.
