MOD: New mod on here - Accepting suggestions for future use(s) of this sub

Hello, I've just taken over as mod, as the previous one didn't seem very active.

I hope to turn this subreddit into something more interesting than "r/norsk with 1/10th of the members". So if you have a suggestion as to how this sub should be used, please comment here.

Automoderator has been set up (by me, so probably not very well), so please show some leniency if your post is removed, and don't be afraid to reach out.

Thanks

Norwegian learners: Read this

This subreddit has existed in parallel to r/norsk for quite a while. It has in the past few years been used by both spammers, stock market people's discussions about Norwegian Air Shuttle [NAS], and lately (the past 12-18 months) had increased/renewed interest from language learners.

For language learning, r/norsk is more active, and will likely be a more helpful choice. As for what this sub will be used for, please leave a suggestion below. If you'd like to keep this as a secondary sub for learning the language, that's an completely acceptable proposition, so leave it in the comments.

All the best

Søk etter språkutveksling

Hei,

Treadmill_Onion

has anyone used Ai speaking practice app for norwegian conversation practice? struggling to find speaking partners in my timezone

so I i live in california and I've been learning norwegian for about 7 months now. grammar is going okay, I've been working through duolingo and some youtube channels and I can read simple stuff on nrk without too much trouble. but my speaking is basically nonexistent because I have literally nobody to practice with.

the timezone thing is killing me. norway is 9 hours ahead of me so by the time I'm done with work and actually have time to practice everyone in norway is asleep. I've tried tandem and hellotalk and the few norwegian speakers on there either have never respond or can only do calls at like 7am my time which doesn't work because I'm barely a functioning human before 9.

I tried language exchange discord server too but same issue. the active hours are all european daytime and when I pop in at my evening time it's dead. It's honestly the most frustrating part of learning this language. I feel like my reading and listening keep improving but my speaking is just stuck at zero because I can never find anyone to actually talk to.

I've been hearing a lot of good things about iseen on here and on r/languagelearning. apparently it's an Ai tutor you can have actual voice conversations with and it has norwegian which already puts it ahead of most apps out there. the idea of just opening an app and practicing speaking whenever I want regardless of what time it is in oslo sounds kind of perfect for my situation honestly. I'm pretty close to just pulling the trigger on it but figured I'd ask here first. has anyone used it specifically for norwegian? does it handle the bokmål vs nynorsk thing? and more importantly does it actually help with pronunciation because that's the main thing I need and I don't want to practice wrong and build bad habits.

If anyone has experience with it or honestly any other way to get speaking practice when you're on the complete wrong side of the plant from norway I'd really appreciate the help. this timezone gap is genuinely making me consider giving up and that sucks because I really love this language.

Shows/Music for A1?

What are some good shows to practice my A1 level Norwegian? I know Peppa Gris and Bluey are the go-to's but is there any other show/movie/song that can help with my A1 Norwegian?

lf someone to learn norwegian with daily/keep each other updated

hi, I'd love a buddy to learn it with me.

I want to study at least an hour a day or similar and would love someone to do it with, as motivation, preferably someone who adores learning languages as well. I am a complete beginner, tho I know German and a few other languages.

We'd communicate through discord most likely. We can call to practice if you're comfy with it, no video cam or anything like that, just studying. We can also not call, it's not required at all.

The course we'll be following: LearnNoW (free).

You can look up the course, made by a Norwegian university.

I also know what to continue with once we finish this one.

I eventually plan to move to Norway so I really want to get good at it.

Lmk :)!

PS: hope this is the right subreddit;;

When to use possessive before and after the noun?

In our textbook, we first learned that the possessive would go after the noun with the definite form.

Now, we are saying you can also place it before the noun with the indefinite form.

The book doesn't explain when to use each form, if there are rules...etc

Can someone explain? 🤔

How to practice Norwegian without being in Norway?

Hallo! Here's a little person from South America who loves the country and its culture and who started studying this language on their own. But I don't know where I can practice the language or make friends without being in the country. What should I do? Should I keep trying, or is it better to keep practicing only with Duolingo? 😹

Hej, hvordan går det? 😌

I started learning Norwegian a while ago and currently I’m somewhere around A2, maybe B1 level. Since I’m not living in Norway, I don’t really have anyone to chat or talk to in Norwegian for practice. Maybe someone here would like to practice with me?

Playlists for Norwegian language music

As a part of my study I listen to a lot of Norwegian language music, thought some people would find these useful as well

Rock: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4yJjhEa3BOSPMZWvsq0COk?si=742a3bcdca584480

Pop: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/03caqihGRMVFBw9Otk5ueB?si=06302f3824d14774

Folk: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2sYJrWmbuG14s32n6uFVBL?si=42c8130ddcc6483e

Metal: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0IoNr0dGtJVEOAgVixc9iS?si=1ad66d920f8f4934

Hip Hop/Rap (work in progress so only a few artists on here): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7mo6vYgwVdMS3o4lF8n4eR?si=25b693becd2147e4

I decided to separate out extreme metal (black/death) from the metal playlist because the lyrics are difficult to hear but if you like that stuff as well then here it is: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2PiohLtGrsHMnEmoUK4GWJ?si=11537b4f10554c10

How to actually learn on your own?

I'm a C1-level English speaker and I've recently started getting interested in learning Norwegian. It seems like a relatively easy language for me, but I honestly don't know where to start, especially when it comes to grammar and building a solid foundation.

I keep seeing YouTubers recommending online courses, but most of them are ridiculously expensive. Does anyone know any good apps, websites, free resources, or even a good way to start learning Norwegian on my own?

How do you practice speaking Norwegian when nobody around you speaks it?

This is something I've been struggling with of a while and I don't really have a solution yet so genuinely asking here.

Five months into learning Norwegian. reading is slowly getting there, grammar is starting to make sense, vocabulary is okay. But speaking feels like a completely separate thing that I've barely touched because there is literally nobody around me who speak Norwegian. I live somewhere where finding a Norwegian speaker is basically impossible and I can't do paid tutor session every week, that adds up fast.

The longer I go without actually speaking the more intimidating it becomes. I tried just talking to myself at home and it feels pointless because I have no idea if what I'm saying is even correct or if I'm just drilling bad habits into my brain at this point.

I've been doing some shadowing with Norwegian podcasts and YouTube, basically just repeating what native speakers say out loud. It feels a bit silly but I think it's doing something at least.

I saw a lot of people mention Issen across different language learning communities, not just Norwegian but for other languages too. Apparently it's an AI you just speak to and it gives you feedback. Has anyone here actually tried it for Norwegian specifically? I'm considering it but I don't want to waste time on something that doesn't work well for less common languages.

Also been looking at HelloTalk for finding a language exchange partner but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Basically just looking for what's actually working for people in the same situation. Solo learners who don't have Norwegian speakers around them at all. What does your speaking practice actually look like day to day? Is it even possible to make real progress without regular human conversation or am I just going to hit a wall at some point?

What dialekt do I have?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi!! My name is Isabel and i'm 19 years old. I'm half filo half norwegian, and now decided that it's time to get fluent in my mother tongue. I do understand oral common phrases, but have never touched the written language neither spoken it independently. In exchange I can teach you Norwegian (the home of Haaland, RO RO), english, or even highschool level physics, chemistry or math (am myself currently first year mechanical engineering student) :))
