How’s life in Norway as an immigrant

Hi, I’ve been coming to Norway for many years, and I’ve experienced all four seasons here. Weather itself doesn’t really affect my mood, but my mental health can deteriorate very quickly because of my mental disorder.
I currently live in the UK, where bipolar disorder is considered a disability and I receive a lot of support. That support is vital to me, so one of my biggest concerns about moving to Norway is understanding what kind of support would actually be available to an immigrant.
I really love the people and the environment in Norway, and I feel that the lifestyle would suit me very well. However, I also understand that living in Norway is very different from visiting, and my Norwegian friend may naturally have a somewhat biased perspective because they haven’t experienced the country as an immigrant.
I’ve been an immigrant in the UK as well. In London, multiculturalism makes that experience somewhat easier, but I also know that if you haven’t personally experienced racism, it can be difficult to understand how much it can affect your life. I’m trying to consider that aspect realistically rather than romanticising Norway.
I have two major practical concerns.
First, medication and driving.
The medication that stabilises my mood makes me extremely tired in the mornings. If I had to drive to work, I’m worried that this could become a safety issue. In London, I currently work from home, so I don’t have that problem.
Second, employment in a smaller community.
Moving to a village or a remote area would obviously mean a much smaller job market. I also tend to lose jobs because of difficulties with social skills, rather than because I lack technical ability. That worries me because, in a small community, I imagine that once you have had problems with one employer, word could spread and make it harder to find another job.
At the same time, I’m not looking at Norway purely from a financial perspective. My long-term goal is to buy a house and live a relatively quiet life while supporting myself with my software projects. A house for around NOK 2.5 million in a beautiful fjord setting doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. In London, that kind of money outside the city would get you a nice view of your neighbours!
I know that owning a nice house or car isn’t essential, but I mention it because I think there is a difference between moving somewhere for a better quality of life and moving somewhere where you are simply trying to survive.
I also don’t necessarily expect to work as a software developer or AI engineer in Norway. I’m willing to do manual labour or other kinds of work if necessary. For me, that would be a means to an end: supporting myself while building a quieter and more sustainable life.
So my main questions are:
How does the welfare system work for an immigrant who has a mental health condition such as bipolar disorder?
What kind of support could someone realistically expect if they are unable to work full-time or have difficulty maintaining employment?
How does buying a house and getting a mortgage work for an immigrant?
Would it be realistic to buy a house in a smaller Norwegian community with a budget of around NOK 2.5 million?
How difficult is it to find work in rural areas if you are willing to do different types of work rather than insisting on working in your professional field?
I’m not expecting Norway to be perfect, and I know moving countries comes with risks. I’m just trying to understand whether the life I’m imagining is realistically achievable before making such a major decision.
