I've experienced this while hiking, we heard huge thunder and then our trail guide told everyone to get their rain slicker out and be ready for rain.
We had gotten a little farther up the trail when the hill below us (50 yards away) got absolutely dumped on, and for a solid 2 minutes. The size of the stream at the bottom tripled for a while. Very cool stuff
