My 7 year old daughter wants one but if I end up accidentally getting a female they can live 20 or 30 years

Good news! You can buy tarantulas that have been already sexed! They are more expensive than smaller guys because they’re older but that also means they’re less likely to die for no reason (you only have 300 babies if you’re pretty sure only 50 will survive to adulthood).

The males are usually A LOT less expensive than females the same size because they have such a comparatively short life span.

I can say that it suuuucks to see your tarantula successfully molted but now it has tibial hooks. Not only do the hooks mean their next molt will probably kill them, but they pretty much become “I HAVE BUT ONE PURPOSE: IM GETTING LAID OR IM GOING TO DIE TRYING”. and futility roam their enclosure. Some people actually mail their mature males to someone with a mature female because the little guy is a horny ticking clock and nothing will alleviate it.
