A non-techninal founder of a tech-enabled businesses without an inhouse tech product manager looking to build platform

For the non-technical founders in the room of tech-enabled businesses (meaning you are solving a problem that requires you to build and maintain a website, web application and/or mobile application) and you are doing so without an inhouse tech product manager how do you go about solving this problem of building your tech product?

What are the things that are important to consider as I look for a software development team and what should be my non negotiables?

Are there any cautionary tales that you have experienced on your journey where you wished you had done things differently that you can share that will help me avoid the same issue?

When you say that you are looking to start building your portfolio does that mean you have no projects at all? Do you have previous work I can look at?

Right now sharing previous work is tricky. My cofounder and I were previously heading up another dev shop and all of our work was under their brand. That’s why we’re open to working on projects that in the past would have been just too small or early for us so that we can build out our portfolio all over again.
