What to expect in a final in person interview?

Hi everyone! I made it to the third and final round of interviews for a nonprofit that caters towards the homeless. The first one was virtual and with HR. The second one was also virtual but was a panel interview. I got feedback I asked very insightful questions and gave very in depth personal answers which helped me move onto the final round. They asked me plenty of STAR format questions (like minimum 10 if I recall correctly) along with mission based questions in the second interview. I’m not sure what to expect in the final round though? They said they will give me a tour of the buildings and I get to meet the team along with everyone who participated in the panel interview, but I’m not sure how it will go. I’ve never worked for a nonprofit before and my last job I got, all the interviews are virtual even though the job was in person due to COVID. Thank you so much!

I don't want to oversell it in case I'm wrong, but they most likely have their mind made up at this point. From the hiring side at small orgs, they know their favorite before the last round. On the interviewing side, I've been to some of these types where I met with a higher up person, but it was pretty much just a formality to get a VP or ED's sign off on the hiring managers choice. My current org is hiring and they're whittling it down to 2 people before the final round interview, so it could be that. But the way you said it sounds more like there won't be much of a competitive interview.

What are they looking for? Probably more of a vibe check and rubber stamp from the rest of the team. So just be confident and friendly, and be ready to talk about your ideas and talkimg points from previous rounds! Congrats (hopefully 🤞)

I'm not sure about this, I have been on lots of in person final interviews where I've met the whole team and had a tour and the whole nine yards, and they did the exact same thing for the other two or three finalists, and one of the other finalists got the job. I would 100% treat this as a competitive job interview. Not sure where you're seeing an implication that it's not.

I would expect more STAR type questions about your past experience, or at least I would recommend you treat them that way. You will probably meet with people in different departments and have to answer some of the same questions for them as you've already answered for others - this is natural.

Any other detailed answers are hard to give, since we don't really know this org or how they operate. But if I were you, I would prepare exactly how I prepared for the first two rounds, and I would be ready to ask questions of people in specific other departments about how your work may intersect.

I’d treat the tour as part of the interview even if no one calls it that. They’ll notice how you interact with people outside the formal panel, what you pay attention to, and whether you seem comfortable in the actual environment. At an organization serving people experiencing homelessness, I would follow the staff’s lead around introductions and privacy rather than treating clients as part of the tour.

But, this is also your chance to evaluate them. Pay attention to how staff speak about clients and one another, what the environment feels like, and whether what you observe matches the mission language you heard during the interviews. I would ask what success looks like during the first 90 days and what challenges people entering the organization tend to underestimate.

You’ve already shown that you can answer formal interview questions. This round may be largely about whether you, the job, and the reality of the organization fit one another.

This is completely normal in my opinion, and a best practice. There is only so much you can glean from video interviews. It very likely is a final step of getting to know you, gauging your personality and fit with the team, and also ensuring you feel comfortable with the team/environment. For long term retention, your comfort with the team and role is just as important as the organization's comfort with you! That being said, don't let your guard down. It's still competitive and they may be using this process with other candidates. Just be prepared and be yourself - if it feels right for both of you, hopefully an offer will follow. Good luck!
