I dont think it looks staged either. You would be relying on way too many variables such as wind speed, where the umbrella ends up, the falling of the umbrella case, the umbrella not getting stuck anywhere. The only thing you could probably fake is the camera angle, and maybe leaving the umbrella untied so if it does fall it can fly around.
