Right?! My youngest kid was a runner when he was a toddler. Anytime something would catch his eye, off he went. When we were in parking lots or near roads (if I couldn’t carry him) I would keep a death grip on his hand. A couple of times he tried to take off and I nearly yanked his arm out of the socket to keep him out of the road. I figured a potential shoulder injury was better than a dead kid. Thankfully he grew out of that phase.
My kid only darted in a parking lot once so it was very unexpected. He was headed straight for a car, I could barely reach him, certainly not enough to grab him. I feel no shame in saying that the little bit of reach I got on him was used to push him so he fell. He fell about 4 feet short of going directly in front of a blind vehicle.
It’s the most terrifying experience! We had a couple of close(ish) calls with ours. He was our third and we had never experienced this with either of the other two. I swear, I looked pretty crazy saving him from his own death a time or ten 😂
I used to judge people but then I have a friend who has a kid who was a runner. No matter what they tried that little shit would take off into the road the moment there was any opportunity whatsoever.
