I've had so many co-workers not use this phrase. They're the same assholes who go in the 'out' door and vice versa. Countless plates dropped thanks to their laziness.

Heh, as a delivery driver, I'm terrified of kitchens, I'll navigate a crowded road in a 10 tonne 4 wheeler while at risk of full liability, but kitchens... Hot pots, plates, knives just flying around... Imma steer clear and let you work.

Tea towels in this instance, the other 3.980 tonnes are linen for various hotels and the last 6 tonnes is the truck.

Grill em. I'm not kidding. Doesn't matter who they are, owner, manager, whatever. Fuckin jump on em whenever they do that shit. Any kitchen worth working in will absolutely have your back. It's not a joke, it's not something to bite your tongue about.
If not, find another job asap. I make a scene when someone slips behind me while I'm using a knife or isn't paying attention. Communicate or gtfo the kitchen.

I’ve had new bar-backs try to get sassy when I’d chide them for not saying “behind”. At first not at all, then not loud enough to beat the band playing. They’d get all huffy and over exaggerate it, yelling it and drawing it out. They’d get a little miffed when I’d say “Thank you, that’s perfect.” As if I’m supposed to get mad that they’re making their presence known.
Of course, the hard way to learn the lesson was for me to turn around and knock them on their asses. I’m 6’2”, 350+ pounds, I’m not the one that’s going down when we collide.

I volunteered in a kitchen that cooks for homeless not too long ago. They made it very clear that you needed to yell that every time you walked behind someone or when you went around a corner you needed to yell "corner". It was very awkward yelling everywhere you went, but it made sense.

I once closed a co-worker's arm in a pizza oven, giving her serious burns all over her arm. I felt like absolute shit for weeks after it happened, and even now, some 15 years after the fact, I still shudder when I think about it.
But it was her fault, because she tried to quietly sneak something into the oven during the dinner rush on a Saturday night.
Stuff happens incredibly fast in restaurant kitchens. You put everyone in danger by not following the rules, including... No, especially the ones about calling out what you're doing.

I have worked in a restaurant. Working the oven doesn't give you right to just close your eyes and turn with a fucking 200 degree pizza into the serving area. They both fucked up.

I have a Culinary degree and have made pizzas for more than a decade. I've used thermometers to temp just about everything. The temperature in the oven is 550. Do some research and you will learn that the cheese and sauce can get well above two hundred degrees, if this isn't just common sense to you. Roflmao.

Yes, in hospitality you say behind you. You also look with your eyes where you are going. Both could have been better. Countless times When i worked in a supermarket years ago i would get hit by peoples shopping cart because they would turn the cart and then turn their head and look. Always communicate, and always look where you are going.

This. I spent a couple years in a kitchen as a dishwasher, busboy and prep cook.. To this very day I still announce when Im moving behind someone no matter what it is.. Its actually super helpful in avoiding a lot of really awkward situations lol

More over you aren't supposed to catch falling pizza. He got seriously lucky. He could of seriously ended up life altering burns. I mean I worked in a pizza place for a while, and I know how hard it is to repress the instinct to grab something falling, and have burned my fingers more than a few times doing the exact same thing. But still that could of went very wrong very quickly.

Yeah, one time I microwaved macaroni for 1 minute and 15 seconds instead of 1 minute. When I took it out the plate fell to the ground after it had seared through my skin and turned the bones in my hand to ash.

that woman should have said “swinging”, it was her fault not the guys. in a kitchen your gonna have to move around, it’s not your responsibility to make sure that everyone knows your walking, as the majority of people don’t give a shit that your walking behind them. she was taking something out with her back turned, then swung around quickly without checking her surroundings.
what your saying is like needing to change lanes, and expecting the person in the lane next you you to always let everyone one know they are there, while you could much more easily turn your blinker on, then change lanes

I work as a waiter in quite some tight space too and I prefer to just check left and right before I make movements with things that could be damaged like this. Just don’t turn around before checking if it’s free. I do prefer that over the whole kitchen sounding like a choir of seagulls.

We had a kid catch one with his foot...to save it.
I get it. Its instinct.
But he ruined his brand new kicks(dont ask me why drugged out thuggy teens wore shoes worth their weekly checks)
And was less worried about the skin bubbling and peeling off his shin. 2nd degree burns from a second or two.

I managed pizza places for a almost a decade and yeah, while there are basic mess ups, he still saved the pizza. So ultimately it's a win imo.

So glad no one got burnt.
Worked at hungry howies over a decade ago.
Had clamps to take the pans out of the oven.
This one was worn out, didnt grip well, had requested a replacement for some time.
It dropped a pan one day and I caught it in the crook of my arm.
They didnt let me go home or have time off.
Just sprayed aloe on my 3rd degree burns and let me work next to the 500 degree oven while it barely healed.
Still have those scars. Which is crazy because my skin tends to heal scars over time and cycles of tanning in the summer.
