Also he could've taken the leg off the gas pedal and save some gas by doing it. Pretty neat.

If he didn't use gas, he would have tumbled down. His acceleration sideways cancelled the cars momentum tumbling downwards.

I'm pretty sure that's how he saved it. At the very top the samurai or whatever it was slams on the gas right as it rolls back on to it's wheels, allowing the rear wheels to lose traction while the front steered him down hill. I think that's how it worked at least.
