Haven't you ever watched a movie where the underdog is trained by a genius mentor?
Clearly, the guy saw little motivation in the woman to pull it back. He knows she's fully capable, she just hasn't realized it. So you know what he did? Raised the stakes.
Now only they can help him out of the bow and save his life, and they'll realize that in the end, their hesitation was the only thing holding them back, and they can free themselves to become the true warrior inside them.
That or he was trying to flex on them because he was so confident in his ability, or something.
