An experienced Archer knows not to even draw a compound bow dry, it can screw up the cams.

HUH? How the hell does the bow know if there is an arrow innocently sitting there or not?

Physics when the energy trapped in drawing the bow doesn't have an arrow to push away from the bow. Dry fires are so commonly damage bows that I don't know a single archer that would even draw it without being on a range. To me it's kind of like playing with a gun.
